Prague 2 Years, 1 Month ago
greetings from Prague, city of 1000 spires....my Father, Jan Hird Pokorny was born close by in the town of Brno but grew up in the center of Prague until he was about 22 yrs old and had to escape from the ocupation of the Nazis in WW2...He escaped through switzerland as a student and arrived in New York City through Ellis Island...there he enrolled in Columbia University and immediately upon graduation at the top of his class was hired as a teacher of Architecture where he remained till the golden age of 90 as a professor Emeritus...he was one of only 3 Architects in the world to recieve the extremely rare Fellows award...the others are Philip Johnson and IM Pei...he worked his entire life to further Czech Americans and was the Chairman of the Czechoslovakian Refugee Organization, and late also served as chairman of the New York City Landmarks commision...he was a special man, the likes of which are disapearing from this world...so anyway, I am in his beloved City once again and it is beautiful! I miss my father, who taught me so many things, including how to hold a pencil and how to conduct an honest life...his Soul is here everywhere I turn...

yesterday I toured Prague Castle...I will post pictures upon my return...I am taking lots of great reference pictures for future Dwarven Forge designs...D&D players would all Love Prague and the regions around it...as its flavor is very much D&D in looks...If you travel there once in your lives you would not regret it.

Here I drink the real Budweiser, called Budvar, it is where Budweiser came from, although the taste is different, more smooth in quality with a creamy head, it is quite delicious...but here they are famous for Pilsner Beer..in the states it is known as a type of beer...but is actually from the town of Pilsen, it was my fathers favorite...

Cheers!

That sounds like my grandfather except he was a Russian Jew living in the Ukraine. He also immigrated to the US through Ellis Island and went to the same University! After that he moved to Jersey, opened up a string of candy stores and blew all of his money on gambling and booze :). I wonder if they were friends? I applied to Columbia University and they turned me down. Jerks.

EDIT: I was just having a conversation with someone at work as to why Budweiser does good business in Europe when in the states it taste like piss water compared to European imports. It would make sense that they make a better product over there to compete.

European and American Budweiser only has the same name. That is more or less where similarities end.

The Czech Budweiser is much older.

The Budweiser from Budějovice has been called "The Beer of Kings" since the 16th century. Adolphus Busch changed this slogan to "The King of the Beers"

The name mainly indicates a beer brewed in the city of Budweis.

American Budweiser contains 30% of rice - something that wasn't allowed in Europe due to the 'Deutsches Reinheitsgebot'.

If you want to have a 'true' Budweiser in the US then look out for a Czechvar - that is the brand name that European Budweiser is sold as in the US. Buy a bottle of each and look how similar (or not !!) they are.

Mmmmmmm Beer!
I sound like Barny off The Simpsons! :)

You can buy Budvar in the Uk and I agree it's much nicer than Budweiser.
Anyone tried a Belgium Weissbeer called "Hoegaarden" - that's nice.
The Polish beer Zywieck is really nice too. I've drunk that in Warsaw.
Of course a nice English Bitter or Pale Ale is hard to beat!

Mmmmmm Beer

I live near Bremen, in germany, and since it's the home of Beck's of course most people here drink it. I don't since I never consume any alcohol.

Beer lovers in NYC should check out a bar called Rattle & Hum They have more beers than you could shake a stick at, they change the beer menu regularly, plus its conveniently located near NYC's premiere gaming store (which is how I found the bar in the first place). Buy some gaming gear, then head across the street to down some fine brews!

...back on topic,

Stefan, I'm glad you were able to "reconnect" with your father and his origins. It's very important and I'm lucky mine is still healthy. Also, there's probably a lot of DF fans who are very enthusiastic upon hearing about your interests in several castle designs!!!

You've been to the Dragon's Cave beneath Wawel Castle that used to have a brothel in it, right? I expect all DF castle sets you may make to have miniature harlots, I mean historical accuracy!

The Rattle & Hum bar (U2 reference for those that couldn't guess) is located at 14 East 33rd Street (between Madison & 5th Avenue). The game shop I was referring to is the Compleat Startegist- located at 11 East 33rd Street, so more or less right across the street from Rattle & Hum. Both are highly recommended.

And hey- I just hit 200 posts!
