I have to admit, the Den of Evil line has never really been my favorite. I always found a complete dungeon constructed with it to be a bit too over the top.

But, I must say, I could really see getting one of these sets just for the 4X4 rooms and the double doors. Those, I think, would be really great accent pieces for a Classic Dungeon layout.

The Den Of Evil set is my favourite.

The details are really great and there no problem with the floor tiles once combined like with the classic dungeon line.
I really appreciated the basic set (I bought another room & passage set to a fan here) & the 2 other sets bring more elements that gave me a lot of opportunities to make something good ... my players were all blind by the beauty ... and this latest set is a very good surprise to me since it adds more I wanted !

However there are still things we need (secret passages missing ...) and I also noticed a difference into the grey color of the 3 doe sets released in the past and the forthcoming set. Am I dreaming ?

The long corridor with 2 doors is also something we need for the classic dungeon line & ROTA one.

It took me a bit of time to warm up to the DoE set. When it debuted, my problem with it was that there was no real way to "furnish" it, and hence no way to distinguish one DoE room from another.

I mean, with the dungeon or MBS settings or ROTA, you can put things in them so that the final setup is a fortress, or a tavern, or a guild hall, or a study, or a temple, or a prison, or a shrine, etc. Not all the relevant accessories were made by DF, of course, but they existed out there and they worked.

With the cavern sets, you don't really do that, because there aren't "rooms" obviously and also because every setting is ultimately "cave," but the various textures of the pieces themselves allow various portions of a cavern to be distinguished. Plus, once the water elements are incorporated, you can have the course of the river, the various lakes, and so on. (and, hey, you can also make a mine! which is awesome)

But with something like DoE, you just had one large homogeneous space. No "rooms" really. It was fine for a small, single encounter -- a large room that you reach through the dungeon's demon arch, for example -- but it didn't work for me as a full setting. Aside from the monotony of every part being identical, the lack of appropriate "furnishings" meant every room had to be EMPTY. Sure, it was fun to have various narsty demons and aberrations wandering around, and I don't mean to imply it was a BAD set. It just didn't feel as useful or as limitless as the other DF products. And those empty, and hence purposeless, rooms did kinda bug me.

However, each new expansion has introduced architectural elements that lend some variety to a layout without the need to furnish the rooms. The blood pit, the long walls with their starport infinity illusions, and now the smaller chambers, the double doors, the lava bits, etc. It provides a way to create an actual layout instead of just a bunch of identical empty rooms. Now that the space can feel more useful to me, I can appreciate the gruesome details of the architecture more freely.

It really is a stunning and original setting, and I'm terrifically pleased that Stefan has been so dedicated to it. Had nothing come out past that first set, it would have been like the Ogre's Den to me -- a neat add-on, but not a full-on alternative to the cavern, dungeon, MBS and ROTA settings. As it's grown, though, it really has risen to be one of my favorites.
