I'm sure this is not the case i.e. get some better photos!

I think most of the pieces for the ice set are the same sculpt as the cavern set, Just ICED over, and with some pieces having ice added. I may be wrong, I will see when I get a set.

What will be cool is to have some Clear resin Wall pieces I may have to make some.

Passages would be good. Or maybe even an icy version of the chasm set- lots of cracked edges, ice bridges, maybe a couple of specialty pieces that come apart. You could have an iced over chasm with cracks all over it and a removable middle section- for one of those classic tension filled walking on thin ice moments. The removable middle piece would be for when the ice eventually breaks and sends players and monsters alike tumbling down.

Hi pals, a lot of time has passed since I last posted, but I've felt compelled by Mr Wasilewsky's great post, so here are my impressions. As he himself has said, don't take this like a bad comment, I love DF products and have tons of sympathy for the guys who run it, I think they are the best people out there, and I mean this as help, not as bad critic.

That said, I was very very interested in the Ice environment, but this set has been a bit of a let down for me. See, I have money to spend but I am in the verge of not being able to store much more sets (I'll find the way to continue doing it, you can be sure, I'm already on it), and I have to optimize the space / usability ratio of the stuff I buy. I have one set of each from almost every thing that has come out the last few years (and a ton of previous), I have 2 ROTA, 1 ROTA expansion, 1 of each DoE, Lake and Rivers, Chasms, Wicked 3, Advanced Builders 3, 1 of each set of Medieval Building and Tavern Accesories... but I had to pass on lake expansion, ruins, the lava sets (I took some individual pieces though, as my impressions are pretty similar to the ice set), and the same with the wooden / elven set.

So, I was expecting for some stuff that I could use as add-on to my current sets. I mean, independent ice walls, stalagmites, banks of ice / snow, columns, a couple of entirely new walls that could be used among standard cavern pieces, ice bridges, accesories to put on walls, etc. That way I could use all of it among my other cavern stuff, and, not only that, I even could have ice dungeon (not only ice cavern) even iced ruins, iced temples, etc.

But this sets almost forces me to use only pieces from it to build iced environments, as they don't seem to look well combined with standard pieces.

May be in time I'll be persuaded (fan photos, etc) to buy a set, but for the moment I will have to pass.

Hope it helps guys, I wish you the best.

Greetings,
arsthein

So maybe we need an Ice Cavern Accessory Set? It could have some of the items that people are wanting.
Or you could just cast some clear or slightly blue tinted Hirst pieces if you are inclined to be a do it yourselfer.

I can understand the wish that more of this set were new, or that more clear resin were involved in it -- I had the same hopes. But I also think this is the much wiser way to have gone. On the one hand, as I think I posted recently in another thread, clear resin would make the set FAR more expensive (though I didn't anticipate Stefan's 50% higher quote) and a lot more fragile, not to mention prone to yellowing over time (which doesn't necessarily happen, but can). On the other hand, I also think that it makes a TON of sense for a company in DF's position to maximize revenue by doing small tweaks like this to existing sets. I've said before that I think DF should experiment with repaints of its current line, assuming that saves any money. (I would think it would have to -- there's still the cost of production and shipping and so on, but you also get to sell a product to a customer who has already bought it without the trouble/expense of sculpting and producing a whole new design)

Of course there would be grumbling, and a great many fans would not buy the repaints. But some would -- assuming the right combination of "die hard DF comlpetist" and "but the repaint looks so awesome!" This is far from unusual -- not only do major toy companies do repaints to save money all the time, but even smaller higher-end collectibles like comic book statue companies (Bowen Designs, etc.) frequently roll out a basic statue, and then a repaint with a minor variation, in order to maximize return on their development costs.

Plus, as has been pointed out, all it takes to bring the set more in line with expectations is a Winter Accessories set that features more new pieces and more resin, that could both spice up the Ice Caverns themselves and also ease a transition into ice temples, ice dungeon, etc.

I will say that once I grew used to the fact that the set wasn't going to be a radical departure from the regular cavern set, it really grew on me. I'm super psyched for it, I've taken out a bunch of winter minis and some Hirst Arts clear resin cavern bits I bought on Ebay (since I don't mess with clear resin myself... terrified of the stuff!) I cannot WAIT to see this stuff in action!

As for the repaint notion, I have a few thoughts on what else DF might experiment with, just off the top of my head:

The ROTA repaint I did myself, with white walls and gold crown molding and floor, looks awesome.

A DoE repaint, inspired by what I had thought the set would resemble when concept art was first posted, done in mostly black with some grey or dark blue highlights, with more gloss to it. Black marble, that type of look.

This one would be tricky, but the Cavernous Lake Set with blue water instead of green. Of course, that would make it not work with the rivers, and I'm not sure if it would be worth it to do ALL the water sets in repaint -- the Lake Expansion and CRW set. BUT a basic, mostly enclosed lake done in blue water would be awesome for the water near the surface of the cavern, where there's maybe less algae and more of a fresh, healthy (as opposed to sickly) vibe. (I realize that if the water were self-enclosed and therefore not flowing, the chance of algae would INCREASE and the water of a lake like that would be far more likely to be green than the water in a lake fed by a swiftly flowing river, but... well, hush)

Anyhoo, those are just the ideas off the top of my head. But I think it would be a good business move for DF to start considering repaints - maybe gauge sales on the Ice Cavern, see if the concept has helped or hurt sales.

Oh, and just to be clear -- and so I don't insult Stefan! -- I don't mean to dismiss the Ice Cavern by treating it as an example of a "repaint" as though no new work went into it. I realize this wasn't just tossed offf by slapping white paint on some cavern sets that hadn't sold! :P There are a lot of new elements to this set, and the "Monsters of Winter" thread shows off more clearly all the frozen pools of water that have gathered in the recesses of the floor, and I think people will be pleased by just how different the set is when they get it. I just also recognize that its basic footprint is borrowed 100% from the regular Cavern Set, and there aren't pieces that have been executed entirely in clear resin. The word "repaint" in this context doesn't have to mean just literally "identical sculpt but new paint job" -- when statue companies release a repaint, it frequently has a small variation in pose or in what weapon the character is holding, and McFarlane toys repaints frequently featured different head sculpts or accessories etc. "Repaint" is just shorthand in this context for "the foundation for this has been seen before, but it's tricked out differently now and has a totally different feel." It's not meant as a slight to the Ice Cavern itself!

I don't actually have any Cavern sets (yet) for a number of reasons, including my unreasonable position of waiting for a Chasms set. Similarly, the Ice Cavern set is a very low priority for me until there are transitions between bare stone and ice.

However, Cavern to Ice Cavern transitions can be done with as few as five unique refurbishes using two unique pieces.

Pick a wall piece and do two refurbishes, one with ice on the left and the other with ice on the right.

Take a floor piece and do three refurbishes, one with ice in one corner, one with ice on 1/2, and one with ice in three corners.

Put one of each piece in the Ice Expansion set, with a couple of extra 1/2-ice floor pieces. Devote the rest to new items, and I think DF will have another winner.

here is an example of a possible way to transition the Cavern to the Ice Cavern using stones and flat rocks...I think it works fine...btw, sales on the Ice Cavern are going good:)

We don't really have plans to "repaint" any other sets right now...maybe in a year or two we could re-visit the idea but not for the moment...it would be great to do an Ice Cavern follow up with some completely new and kool add ons...open to any idea's right now...maybe a few frozen dungeon wall pieces with some transitions leading into the Ice Cave would be kool...some ice accessories, pillars, embankments, varying floors,etc...

An expansion set would be really COOOOL. Ice pillars and walls are a must. How about a iced over rock bridge formation, An ice Crevasse, A frozen Pool, Ice crystal shards, Ice cavern entrance piece.
