Other than the time spent establishing and maintaining an e-Bay store, what are the drawbacks?

I Try not to look to E-bay unless its one of thoes sweet deals. I started with Two sets a month from DF.. and after my fourth set I spyed an e-bay auction for one set at a buyout well under the norm so I messaged him and asked him if he had more DF. In the end he said no to me but called me back the next day and we made a deal for 8 sets and two ogre dens for 400 bucks shiping included.. Lucky me ! I have not seen a sweet deal like that in a LONG time.. lol. Other then that one that Arcarius2001 snaged good for him !

you have to give a % of your sales to ebay.

I don't think that a company like DF needs really to go on ebay to share its profit with it.
Troll and Toad, or MBA probably have an ebay shop, because there is a lot of people in the world that search for miniatures and wargaming terrains, but does not know their stores...
so they accept to lose part of their gain, in exchange of more customers..
but that's not the case of DF, because there is not a lot of people that search for stuff similar to DF, without knowing DF.

True, but what is the % I wonder? Would the possibility of increased traffic and sales at the DF store be worth the trade off with giving a small fee to e-bay? One might think of it like advertising...

Ebay generally takes 9 percent of the final selling value which I think
may include shipping now and paypal takes like 3 percent more. You can set a 30 day fixed price listing for .50 cents if you don't add any bells and whistles. I know ebay stores cost money every month depending on
what features you want if DF wanted to go that far.

My personal suggestion would be to sell a few rare, retired, altered or custom pieces from time to time to generate advertising for this website
without becoming a full fledge ebay store and loosing 12 percent off the top.

Windstone Editions is a company that sells very high end hand painted and
sculpted dragons and they do something similar. They may do a test paint
of a particular dragon and sell 5 on ebay. These signed and numbered test
paints can go for 300 to 800 percent of the normal selling price. I
realize it's a different market but the two companies are similar in a few
instances.

There's also the need to reconcile the balance on hand in their inventory system with whatever they sell on ebay, which could get annoying (but maybe the volume would be low enough for that not to be much of an issue).

Well, I'm thinking that DF might put up one set per week, just to keep a presence (and a link) on the site.

That percentage is off what actually sells on eBay, not their total inventory, right?

Would this also give them a more solid foundation to file complaints against any counterfeit and/or rival manufacturers that occasionally pop up on eBay?

Cavern Set goes for $410, shill bidding or a better investment than gold?

Honestly the ebay prices have made me not feel particularly uncomfortable spending a lot of Dwarven Forge materials. At the very least they do a good job of keeping their value, which can be said about few other "toys"
