Ruins Expansion Set 4 Years, 2 Months ago
I, like many on this site, am completely blown away by the new ruins set and I will be supporting it by buying 3 or 4 sets. This may be jumping the gun a bit but I thought we might be able to offer Steff and Jeff our collective ideas for any future follow up set, assuming this one sells as well as we hope!

I will kick off with my ideas:

A trapdoor/manhole cover piece
A floor piece with a single square hole (full hole not partial)
Single square piles of leaves, bones and more rubble pieces
Burnt out fire place wall piece
Smashed furniture pieces
More full and some 'half' size cracked floor slabs
A well piece
Ruined 6 by 6 floor piece (to make second floor set ups more easily)
Burnt timber corner posts/floor section (collapsed 2nd floor)
Crumbling pillars

Funny you should mention this...

We would love to hear everyone's ideas on additional pieces. We already have some ideas for a Ruins 2 Set, but we need more! Stefan wants your input on:

1) If an additional set is wanted
2) IF yes...then your ideas for new pieces

Ideas from my head:

Ruined Short Passage Piece

Ruined 6" Long Passage with partially collapsed floor (and log!)

Ruined Dungeon Entrance (akin to the RotA one)

Ruined Half Pillars

Ruined Diagonal Walls

6" x 6" Floor Tile with 3" x 3" rough real hole (and insert)

Ruined Straight Wall that appears to have been melted away by magical fire

Passageway Rubble Insert (1" x 2") A quarter-round designed to go up against wall in passage so it looks like one wall is collapsed, but one square is open for passing.

Curved Wall with Gothic Window (slightly collapsed so it could be used okay in non-ruined set-up)

Outdoor Rubble Pile (with vines to suggest the set-up is outdoors)

how about a set of 2 passage dead ends that end with a broken
floor and partially walls (so that you can form a corridor that has been
split by a chasm).
Make it so that they would fir together to form a complete 6" passage.

I like many of the ideas for future ruined dungeon sets, especially the dungeon entrance, and will probably buy them as well. I would like to see a ruined MBS set with crumbled partially burnt walls, collapsed beams, and so on. These ruins sets make my DF collection more useful to my fantasy wargame hobby as well. :)

I would love to see doors in various states of disrepair, as well as a ruined portcullis/drawbridge setup.

Ruined MBS would be cool, too.

I was going to say "Darn, you beat me to it!" but your idea is much better than mine was.

So I'll go with:
1 - floor piece with tiles pushed up from below
2 - smashed stairs
3 - broken "mermaid fountain"
4 - "water pool", dry with leaves or silt and cracked bottom

How about the bottom half of a staue of a certain god of a certain race that only shows the spider body? Hmmmm... [fade to black, cut in evil laughter] Broken vases rubble etc. how about a half water piece with a floor piece looking like it is jutting out from the water.

____/
___/

Or what about bits and pieces of stone statues that look so life like... Almost as if the adventurers were frozen in stone and have been damaged over time... Maybe a certain someone with a stone cold stare could be waiting...

How about the first ever archway or in thsi case broken archway? Make it like a 6x2 long passage piece with the middle 4 pieces cut out and at the corers of teh 2 inch piece on each side have teh pillars that go up and would start to curve in be broken off.

How about a ROTA ruins set with statues? Dried fountain? What about a venus de milo (sp?) statue. The woman with no arms? That would go great with a ROTA ruins.

Just a few quick thoughts. I will think of others later.

Well, friends, I'm afraid I'm going to be the bad guy here, but given the fact that Jeff has asked, and just for the record, I'm going to let go a few thoughts.

First of all, I'm so sorry I don't share the enthusiasm for this set. Don't get me wrong, it's cool, and the extra goodie is awesome and I'll for sure get it when it comes to stock for sale.

But I think that the ruins is something that can be simulated in some ways without the need for a set, even less a ruins addition set. Ok, it is cooler this way, but given the needs and desires for other environments or additions to modify existent ones that can't be emulated by any means or that doing it is way too difficult, I consider it would be much cooler to use Stefan awesome skills in creating new awesome pieces, not broken versions of existent ones. I think it's nice, really, but I would put it far far way in the pool of "to do" sets.

Plus, I have to reserve my space for DF storaging, so I will pass this one, as probably any ruins additions it comes out.

I have to say that I find ├╝bercool some of the ideas I've read here, but I consider none of them belonging to a "ruins" set or addition. The idea from Shadox about the statues is cool beyond belief, as well as the idea of a ruined entrance from Jeff, but this case, again, I find interesting because of the "dungeon entrance" idea, not for the "ruined" part.

Just my two cents, please none take this personal, thanks for asking and reading

Greetings,
arsthein

Intact vs Ruined Environments
www.dwarvenforge.com/forum?func=view&catid=21&id=31670

I agree that this wasn't high on my list of priorities, but there are a few factors that make the Ruins Set a good idea.

One is the undeniable popularity of ruins as a game setting. I can think of half a dozen other products that feature ruins, and all of them have been on the market for a very long time, so they must sell. Many (most?) fantasy genre movies also use ruins as settings (as a way to remind the audience that the movie is set in the distant past, despite the fact that the structures involved would have been new(er) then), so many gamers are predisposed to buy ruins for their games.

Another is that the Ruins Set can be used for at least three basic settings: ancient ruins, new construction (I want to put ruin pieces between regular fantasy pieces and caverns, to show how far the dwarves have got converting a series of caves into a proper dungeon), and recent damage (possibly even swapping out pieces during a skirmish or battle). That kind of versatility is extremely desirable -- it makes me want two sets to begin with, and it makes me glad this will be a "permanent" addition to the Products page so I can buy more in the future (if needed).

Last but not least, it's what Stefan is interested in doing right now, and a happy artist is a productive artist. While I'm sure that business considerations are a major factor in the development process, it remains that Stefan is an artist and DF is a creative outlet for him. Thus, it is important that he work on projects that he is interested in and inspired by. There are probably lots of very beautiful sets that Stefan would love to make that don't make enough business sense to actually develop; likewise, there are probably lots of very marketable sets that Stefan just doesn't want to work on (right now, or ever). Being able to work in the intersection of inspiration and marketability is what makes an artist successful, and I think that we can safely call Dwarven Forge a success.

So even if it isn't at the very top of my wish list (or even if it isn't my cup of tea) I agree with arsthein that the Ruins set is very well done. And I am thrilled to see so many new sets being developed so quickly, and I hope that this trend continues. Because it implies that we're going to see lots more cool stuff sooner than later, and for a long time to come.

How about a couple of stonework-to-cavern transition pieces? These could show the beginning or end of underground construction, an isolated bit of finished stonework in a cavern (a shrine or stronghold), or even simulate magical effects and abilities (illusions, alterations, elemental influences, etc.)

Two 4" straight wall pieces (one with natural stone on the left, one with natural stone on the right), one or more 4"x4" floor pieces, and a passage piece would be enough.

As long as ruins pieces can be tucked together to form whole pieces, this set is great. Because of limited money/storage space, this is a 2 for 1. I can use these as more standard pieces, or as ruins. I like it!

I hope to see more of them in the future, for other sets like MBS

I don't think I've read an idea on this thread I didn't like! I especially like Shadox's "petrified would-be hero" idea. Of course you could just use unpained minis for the same effect but it just wouldn't have that DF quality we've all grown to love.
