Oh (and, hey, by the way, why am I the only one obsessively posting about this stuff?) --

Some things I noticed about the SF set...

1. Using those rounded consoles, it looks like you could put together a darn cool standalone piece of tech for placement just about anywhere. Great as a control device in a SF setting, sure, but also cool in caverns, or even in a dungeon for a neat twist. And, actually, in a dungeon setting this whole set would make great dressings for a mad scientist lab. Reaper has those "Chronoscope" minis coming out this summer, sorta pulp adventure stuff -- seems like putting these accessories in a dungeon setting would be a GREAT backdrop for those guys....

2. I wonder if, combining some of the "corner" console pieces with the regular flat pieces, it would be possible to come up with a similar stand-alone piece, albeit a more elaborate one. I'm thinking one of two varieties -- one version with everything right up against everything else, to create a single piece of furniture, and another version where there's a gap between two straight pieces facing opposite each other, to create a kind of "U" shaped console (or just a square with a gap in the center).

I have to admit, I'm not super-crazy wild about the actual consoles themselves -- they're a bit plain, a lot of blank space, and I wish there was stuff on the screens, and I wouldn't mind more actual switches and levers, and the color palette is a bit basic, which results in a more static, less vibrant and dynamic, total picture. Still, that last problem is easily remedied, and the fact that they can be combined to make all sorts of interesting shapes, and crawl along the walls, more than makes up for it. (oh, and also, while I'm thinking about it, I would kinda want text in places, but I can see why that would be tricky -- what language do you use, and do you try for an alien script, and if there are gamers who use a particular alien script or language would they not want pieces that diverge from their world, etc. -- still, text on SF accessories feels essential to me, lots of "WARNINGS" and "BATTERY CONTROL" and "ACCESS" and instructions and so on...)

I was back-and-forth on this set for a bit, just as I've been on SF since the first add-on, but it's really grown on me, and the thought that it could be combined with dungeon stuff and Chronoscope to make a neat pulp adventure... well, that's pretty freaking cool...

A Love Letter to DF... Kinda'...

RE: SF Gamma...

Very kewl folks. I am looking forward to this, and have been for a long time now.

I did have a question, however. At one point Stefan had said that the SF-G might get split between two sets? Alternately, that the whole thing might be released as one large set.

So, are we looking at the one large set? Or one of the "Split" sets? Curious minds want to know!

I hope that the limited release sells well. To be honest, I almost feel like with such a limited number being produced (just 300) that this is really more of a gift from DF (and Stefan in particular) to the die-hard and rabid fans of Dwarven Forge. Almost, like it's just for me... Almost...

Perhaps that is a bit arrogant, but I can not even imagine another company producing such an affordable special set in such small numbers. I know that the Sci-Fi sets have not really done as well overall as have some of the other "Realms." This makes such a gift even sweeter.

Thank you folks so much for following through on this project. Seriously, thank you. And I would that these sell at least well enough to warrant future special editions to be released. If for no other reason then to help those of us who consider ourselves to be "Core" supporters of DF to round out our collections.

RE: ABS-2

This looks really useful. And although the powers that be of DF have not really confirmed the passage pieces being friendly to having rooms placed beside them, it would appear that they are as has been pointed out by several folks now.

I could not be happier about that possibility, as that has been one of the primary things that makes it difficult at times to convert paper modules to DF layouts. I have gotten in the habit, actually, of designing dungeons with the corridor/room incongruity well in mind. It will be nice to have this problem addressed "Officially"...

RE: RotA

I am very interested to hear more on this. Especially with the hint about new corridor elements being dropped... Too kewl...

You know, I was reflecting yesterday that just a couple of short years ago, there was an announcement that DF would be doing some Sci-Fi sets. The ideas and discussions flew around the forums, and everyone's concepts for new possible sets were put into the cosmos--so to speak. Now, here we are, with five distinct "Realms" or styles of DF sets, and a 6th on the way.

Can you folks believe it?

maj!

EDIT: Reply to L who posted seconds before me I think...

Yes, the new SF consoles will work great in a "Mad Scientist" lab scene... I was thinking about the Flesh Golum from WotC as soon as I saw the previews for this set...

I agree, I think the SF plan is definitely taking shape. It's going to receive the least-attention, simply because it generates the least revenue, but it's good to know that DF hasn't given up on it entirely. I suppose this is a "testing the water" plan -- if they release a small number of sets, with a minimal investment, and that works out, then we can hopefully expect similar releases over the years, just enough to keep the setting alive but not something that's going to be a significant demand on the limited resources DF has available in terms of sculpting and development time in addition to finances.

I think if this does well, there may be an additional hope, too -- that DF would occasionally release other very limited edition sets for die-hard fans. Personally, I'd love a "bridge" set -- not a set of bridges (though, hey, that'd be cool too) but a set that contains elements from every DF setting merging together, passages and wall pieces and what-have-you where SF meets DoE meets dungeon meets MBS. It wouldn't appeal to everyone (you'd have to have most or all of the DF settings even to care!) but it would be really cool for those of us who were interested in that sorta thing. Ditto on an "above ground" set -- trees, streets and signs, whatever DF wants to do, it's something that some people have asked for but most people have indicated they think is a bad idea... maybe a limited release of 200-300 sets would make it worthwhile.

We'll see!

Law,

You mention a "Bridge" set... And I recall, a few years back, suggesting something similar... Basically a Master Conversion set.

As you point out this would allow for seamless transitions from one environment to another, much as the Cavern conversion oieces do now.

These could be limited sets as you say, but they could also be just plain functional, and, if werll designed (Like we need to worry about that) they could still be useful even if someone did not have every set...

Also, some sets are more likely than might be others... For instance, Caverns need conversion pieces for pretty much every set, except, perhaps, for the MBS line. Similarly, the Dungeon sets could easily flow into just about anything else... Even a modern line (were it ever to come about) could have need of caverns, sewers, dungeons (basements), and so forth as conversion pieces.

And I think that the formula would be that if a set has a Room & Passage or even just a Passage set, then it could work with a conversion set. THis would exemplify why sets like MBS (and other future, and similar), sets might not need conversions.

Now, all of this said, while I would love to see a master conversion set, I think that smaller themed sets might sell better. Especially given that certain sets are more popular than are others. Fantasy Room and Passage, or Cavern Sets, as compared to Sci-Fi for instance.

Now, here is the extra part that I have been thinking about for a while. What if some of these "Special" conversion sets pulled double duty as "Rooms" unto themselves?

Imagine something like the Ogre's Den, but with less specific details. In other words, make some generic rooms, that have multiple potential entrance points. Gaps in the walls which could have any sort of corridor system connected to them...

These could be useful then as either conversion points or general rooms found within any setting...

Regardless, direct connective corridor conversion pieces would be awesome for transitions between sets...

Bridge set would be great - kinda like the SKG tiles Subterranean Crossroads which links various tile sets together.

What I AM wondering about, is why nobody is hooting about the NEW DOORS shown in the first pictures!!!

How many different kinds? How many of each included in set?

Narrow only or wide too?

I'm gonna be a pessimist and say there's only one narrow door, with different stuff on either side. That's really all we've seen (though it could be argued that there are two narrow doors...)

I really like 'em, I admit, but I'm more a fan of the wide door than the narrow -- all the narrow doors LOOK cool, but they're a little tougher to work with, so I feel like I use them less often.

Still, I'm chomping at the bit to find out the contents of this set...

Now I have the perfect cross section DOE to the left ROTA to the right and nasties behind...

Harneloot,

I was originally going to reserve my comments on the new door(s) until I had had an opportunity to see/hear how many types there were actually going to be included in the upcoming set. That being said, I now think it is better to speak up now.

Although I do like the look of the new door(s) the lack of variety of doors displayed in the pictures (so far) has left me completely underwhelmed -if not disappointed, as there was some significant discussion earlier on these boards that involved many suggestions for a considerable variety of different doors.

That being said, I really like the angled corner piece that the original (narrow) door is set into. That is a fantastic piece! Hopefully there will be a good variety of DF doors included to use with them.

And finally, the HOTA design looks AWESOME! I can't wait to see the first pics of the actual pieces.

thanks for your kind "love letter" he,he,he...

The Sci-fi set we have here is about 70% of the pieces we created for Sci-Fi...I really hope it sells so that we can go ahead and come out with the other 30% and perhaps even add a few more simple pieces to round out the set...the 30% that we had to leave out are more architecture type rather than accessories types...

ABS2: Yes, you can build rooms that will fit on the outside of the passageways as well as the insides...obviously, you will need to already own Room and Passage Sets and or Room Sets in order for this set to be of any use as it is an add on type set. I think everyone understands that. It will help a great deal if you also own the Advanced Builder 1 set. There are only narrow doors, but more than one style.....I promise to make larger doors and double doors in our next standard dungeon type set which would probably be a sort of Wicked Additions type set...maybe in 2009?
