On my way to pick up Potter. Then to a quiet spot in the park.

Once again these sets rock the free world. I got 3 of each with some goodies. I plan on ordering 1 more TAS and some blank water and even take advantage of the 6x6 discounts before teh end of the month. This is going to be one great fall!!!

You guys really read Potter huh? Maybe I'm missing out....

I love Fantasy literature, its all I practically read, but I'm kinda snobbish about it (kinda like how I feel about my D&D terrain) ;)

I've always been under the impression that Potter is kinda trash/pulp type fantasy reading....any truth to this?

Here's what I really like, if that helps anyone to steer me towards or away:

Robin Hobb
George Martin
Tolkien
Steven Erikson
Moorcock
David Gemmell
Jacqueline Carey

Always looking for new authors!

Potter is somewhere between trash and art, I'd say. I wouldn't rave about the prose itself, though Rowling does have great fun with words -- not only coining new ones (like "muggle," for example) but in puns and naming. She has a good sense of character and pacing, at least much of the time. She's also quite good at playing with people who are snobbish about it -- I went in with a sort of "I dare you to impress me" attitude, and there were twists and turns that genuinely tripped me up. The books are a clever mash-up of detective stories, British schoolchildren stories, and traditional fantasy "hero vs. evil" stories.

What I enjoy most about them, though, is the way in which they thematize moral reflection. Since I'm a professional philosopher, with a focus on aesthetics and ethics, this is my cup of tea. She makes the books revolve around the various moral frameworks presented to the protagonist, and exploits the tensions that arise between them. For example, the hero of a schoolboy story is expected to be independent, somewhat bold if not outright rash, and rebellious. The hero of a romantic epic, on the other hand, is meant to be dutiful, restrained, and honest. The two don't always fit together seamlessly, and showing Harry trying to develop into a "good man" while being confronted with so many rival conceptions of "good" -- well, it's not only a lot of fun, it's quite thought-provoking.

So -- with the plot twists, philosophical speculation, and fun with language that Rowling gives me to chew over, I can forgive the often clunky-prose and wooden narrative passages.

But enough, enough, this thread should not be hijacked, whatever the publishing phenomenon may be.

Anyone wanting to talk further Potter silliness, let's just meet up in the "Non Gaming" section. That's why it's there, after all.

Not that I want to hijack this thread but just for the record I read potter so I can talk to my kids about the story. I really enjoy fantasy books and have mostly thought of potter as kid fantasy easily predictable low level story. However I have been surprised. It is IMO not on par with tolkien but an enjoyable read.

The only author/story that I would recommend is "The Wheel of Time" by Robert Jordan. There are 11 books in the series and it is a bit of slow read in books 7,8, and beginning of 9 but all in all it is a great series. The final book is due out next year if Robert Jordan can maintain his health. He is facing a disease that kills most in 1-2 years. He is doing well and maintains a blog online.

FYI - Budget was approved for a 4th TAS and 1x set of 10 water pieces!!! Only pushing for the 6x 6 inch pieces now.

Jeff,

Can I combine shipping or am I going to get dinged again? If so oh well my fault for not ordering everything at once. If not that is cool to.

Back to Potter. My son is ahead of me and telling me the story before I read. How annoying.

Ordered my sets as well. I am way behind everyone in collecting Dwarven Forge, but I am committed to pre-ording everything they put out (and have been doing that since the first Den of Evil set). Now I just need to scrape together the cash to put in an order of about three of the long time released sets so I have the basics to put all of these accessories in!

More sci fi as well!!

Although, I'm not too fussed if we take a little time out here :) Budget is just a wee bit strained at the moment :)

BTW When does this pre-order period end? I'm hoping a little later rather than sooner given my current predicament :)
