Great newsletter.

I'm glad someone asked about the casting in 2008. Perhaps I didn't read it thoroughly, but I took it to mean we were being asked to pre-order items that aren't going to be available until Summer of 2008. (I do sometimes skip words or sentances, so perhaps I didn't read it carefully enough?)

I'm very pleased with the bonus for large orders as well.
I don't feel like I *have* to turn my pockets inside out to get a "one-of-a-kind," "never-to-be-seen-again" item, but at the same time, I feel very rewarded with a free $150 dollar value for about $400 worth of purchases. (If I remember prices correcdtly from the newsletter I read hours ago.)

I also think it's great that the open water pieces will be available in a $99 ten-pack. That's great.

I'm in over my head in debt right now, and was just in a car accident yesterday which will 96% cost me my car (it's old enough, it'll be totaled and I won't get zip for it). I think it's heaven's way of telling me I have a way out of debt - use my wife's car and don't get a second car - I can save about $100 a month in insurance costs and all the car maintenance costs, etc.. It's something I've considered but couldn't bring myself to do. I think someone above thought I needed a shove in the right direction. We'll see.

I've traditionally not put much faith in faith, but I've come to see some things in the past nine years that could be considered fate - or guided, at the very least.

So, while I LOVE the DF Sets - they are all totally awesome - I am going to be forced to pass on this go-around. I'm already thinking of using whatever blue-book value I receive for the car on purchasing more DF and tokens. I need to stop! I'm ill! I just caught the last 2 seconds of a "spending addiction" type thing on CNN tonight. Perhaps I really am ill?

Okay good work Stefan and Jeff. Great stuff. Truly. We love it. We can't get enough of it. Look forward to seeing more. (and winning the lottery so I can buy it all)

These are spectacular -all around!

I think both of these sets are FANTASTIC additions to their respective lines.

I'll be getting a few of the CWE sets this time, and I might even squeeze in a Tavern set as well and an MBE set also.

Those stairs have me seeing the real potential of a dedicated Cavernous Wicked Additions Set.

Any possibility?

OK, now I've had time to process this stuff and can say a little more about these fantastic sets.

Cavernous Lake Expansion...

Wow, I'm really blown away. Stefan put us all to shame -- we kept asking for things and asking for things and he not only made what we wanted, he reminded us why this is HIS baby by giving us stuff we didn't even THINK of asking for!

- the various "corner land" pieces are fantastic -- utilitarian, not fancy, but will really take the lake setups to the next level, allowing for far greater variety in layouts. The least "splashy" (as it were) pieces of the set, but the workhorses. People who buy 10 of this set? It'll mostly be for these guys.

- The whirlpool. OK, a lot of people asked for this. I have to admit, I wasn't super crazy about the idea. It seemed neat, but it didn't rate very high on my "must have" list. But -- wow! You know what does it for me? That black central hole. It just suggests that wherever this maelstrom leads, it ain't a happy place. This is a situation players are going to get VERY antsy about. That just looks mean. This is the closest we've come to a "lake trap" piece, and it rawks. A lot of depth is suggested here, a lot of activity. Fantastic. I already want this piece to be sold as a single piece, just so I can pick up one or two extra.

- The "stairs." Now, this is a piece I HAD been asking for, and it looks better than I could have imagined. What really blows me away about this one is the little image of two of them sitting on the water in one of the pictures -- it looks like these tall cliffs with this narrow little cave in them, this place where anything could be hiding... or hidden. Very cool. I think I'll want to use these for that effect more than I ever use them as actual stairs...! But like the corner pieces, these will allow for a lot of coolness in layouts.. can't wait.

Then we get to the pieces nobody saw coming...

- The landing. WOW! I hadn't really thought about it, but the lakes we have now don't really have "shores." They just sorta stop. This is a really great piece, and I can imagine wanting more of these in the future - not just duplicates of the piece, but different kinds of shores in different lake expansion sets. Very neat piece. And I love the crab! And of course the wall and bamboo door are great, as well. I suppose some people had asked for crude wooden cavern doors, and with all that "we need more doors!" chatter Stefan was either inspired or was biting his tongue and giggling knowing what he had planned. But this is still unexpected, and looks great. Personally, I doubt I'll often use the landing and the door together -- the landing is such a great shore piece I'll just use it randomly where I want a shoreline -- the doorway and wall I think I'll use to create a small room somewhere in the cavern, where the Mushroom King or Lizard Tyrant lives... just some small cavern that's been turned into a little home... That's what that door screams to me. How unsettling would such a sign of civilization be...? "How can they cut the power, man, they're animals...!"

- The "stepping stones." You know, in a strange way, this is my favorite piece. The look of two of them together (and we GET two in a set! Yay!) is just stunning. Not only are all these messy little edges visually interesting, but the notion of there being a kind of quasi-bridge over the water has all sorts of playable scenarios attached to it. Plus, these pieces sorta make me think of the tides, and the notion that this bridge is only visible at some times of day -- like the water recedes a bit, enough to reveal some passage over the lake... and then in a few hours is covered up again, and is just smooth water once more... A lot of possibilities here...

Tavern Accessory Set

Well, this has been stunning since we first saw elements of it. I have to admit, as much as I love the MBE, when it was first shown alongside the tavern stuff, it was the tavern stuff that got me really riled up, and the MBE was more of a kind of appetizer for me. Sure, the building possibilities it opened up were fun, but it's been so long since we've had DF accessories, I was really drooling for some. (I mean, the treasure and magic items stuff is some of the coolest stuff I have!)

So the tavern stuff...

Round tables and stools -- very nice. Sure, we already have tables, but these don't only come in a different shape; they seem more civilized, more clean. The rectangular tables look at home in a dungeon, but these look polished and sanded and proper. Same thing goes for the stools, it's all very clean and far less "clumsy" than the previous, dungeonyer (it's a word! I just made it up!) pieces. Very nice.

Wine Kegs, Candles, Bowl, Plates, Platters, Mugs -- WOW. This is really what it's all about. These are FANTASTIC, and really unexpected. There is just such a mass of tiny, detailed foodstuff here, and all those great dishware elements. Not only will they make great tavern flourishes, but taken separately, they can add so much life and interest to just about any setup. A big pile of barrels in a dungeon somewhere, with just a bunch of mugs in the corner? How about a treasure chest at the start of a labyrinth, with a bowl inexplicably behind it? Somewhere in some cavern corner, a cask of wine? How cool would that be? It just makes everything feel more INHABITED, makes it feel more real, more like what you'd actually expect to find. It's not all magic items, weapons, piles of gold.. things LIVE in these places, which means a lot of mundane items, just the stuff of an ordinary life. I almost like the idea of splitting these accessories up, instead of having them all in one place and calling it a tavern, just distributing them piecemeal through a dungeon as a way of suggesting all the banal everyday existing that takes place in this space before the players start hacking their way through the citizenry...

Bar (central bar, curved section, side section, entrance, etc) - OutSTANDing! Really love this, and once again, it suggest so much cool stuff! Not only a great bar, but a great way to make guildhalls or town halls or any place meetings take place... more appropriate for "above ground" than below, this is a piece I see getting a lot more use in MBS setups than dungeon setups, as opposed to the rest of this set which seems like it'd work anywhere.

You know what I want to do with the bar? Use it with the railings from the MBE to make a kind of "Studio 54" (I already did a mock-up sorta thing with my own homemade railings, when the MBS first came out) with a person at a front desk and a sort of barrier between those in line and those inside. Or it could be a great convention hall...! Lots of options.

This is gonna be one of the best shipments of new DF since ... well, since the lake and MBS stuff shipped last August! Fantastic October coming up....

Wow. Thanks so much everyone:)

Can't take full credit for the stepping stones...I was just going to make a slim diagonal walkway, when Jeff suggested to turn it into stepping stones (or jumping stones) What a much better idea eh? Why allow characters to walk through when you can make them roll multiple dex checks to keep their balance on slippery stones? Running starts won't help either, gotta jump stone to stone from stand up position right? BTW, all that crusty stuff below the water on the edges of all the shores is just very thin sediment which breaks when characters try to walk on it (or fall on it) although an argument might be made for Elves...

Thanks again! Sorry it took so long.

Note: The Tavern Furniture was designed to be useful for all kinds of scenarios, and I feel it's various parts can be used as an Altar, Cabinets, Stage, etc...especially if you get multiple Sets to mess around with. stacking a couple of the short bars makes a good bookcase...

I look forward to seeing all the ingenious interior designs and uses many of you will come up with:)

You are correct. There are two beds in the Tavern Set. See photo for all items in the set. It does not contain the walls and floors and stuff, however.

We added them at the last minute. Good catch!

Sweet merciful crap! There's a BEHIND the bar!

This whole time I've been thinking the bar was solid, either with a blank back or with a mirror of the front. But I can see in one picture that there are shelves back there! That is even COOLER!

First of all, it's just another level of realism and attention to detail that is the hallmark of DF.

But second, it means you can put stuff BACK there! Coin piles, scrolls, magic tomes, swords, shields, maybe even some of the actual tavern stuff might fit, like mugs or wine casks?

And third -- bookshelves! We have bookshelves! Oh, I was thinking of getting just one of these, but now I may have to get two... just too !@#$@$# useful!

L
oh, and that interjection at the start, that's a Homer Simpsonism, credit where credit is due...

Yes,

There are shelves behind both the curved and short straight "bars" The Long bar is half way "open area", and half way "cabinet with shelf" which does not open because it's WAY too small! Sorry!) so, in other words, there is a shelf on the long bar as well and also an area to hide/store larger items like barrels, sacks, etc...

The plates and mugs DO fit into the shelves. The shelves are very thin but there are some other items from our Treasures and Magical Items Sets, and Dungeon Accessories Sets which fit either on the shelves or behind the long bar.

A certain Evil book from another one of our Sets also fits on the shelf (laying down) he,he,he...

Yes, there are two beds included with the Set as well, painted in different colors than the beds from the Medieval Building Set Expansion (can never have enough beds I think)
