I'm extremely curious about this set. The new pieces themselves -- well, that single-corner piece will be very handy, though I wonder what people with only 1 lake set will be doing with it? I'll have to make some mock-ups to see what can be done.

The double-corner piece, that would be like the mouth of a small connector between two larger lakes, making a kind of figure 8 shape? I wonder what other uses it would have....

The triple...that would seem to allow two rivers to feed into a lake, at a coner.... any other uses? I can't think of what else it could do on its own....

The real key is thinking about how to combine THESE pieces...hmmm....

And then there's that extra cavern element... giant stalagmite? Larger cavern entrance? Cavernous, i.e. natural, stair element? So many possibilities!!!

Well, it goes without saying that I'm snagging this one. I've never made a secret of my belief that the cavernous water sets are the apex of DF's line. I love the MBS and the dungeon stuff, I love it all, but there really is no comparison when it comes to these water sets. Just outstanding stuff.

L,

Imaging an small island in a cavern lake. Scene from Rankin bass animated hobbit with water on all 4 sides of teh island instead of the 3 that I think they drew. With 16 extra shore pieces and 3 lake sets and pieces from a couple of river sets I wanted to put a few rocks here and there so teh players could walk to the island. I would have needed from the way I set it up 2 "2 diagonal corner pieces and 2 3 corner pieces and sever 1 corner pieces (4) to make every thing look clean. Once these sets come out from Stefan I will set it up again and post my isle of black dragon cavern setup. I think these will be ultra useful. I am going to pick up 3 sets along with 16 of teh blank water pieces. These might be useful for sewer to cavern transistions also. I am now thinking I wish we would have bugged Stefan for a whirlpool all water piece. That would have been a great trap. Anyway there is always a wicked cavern set that could include it. I can not wait to get this stuff.

On regard of 'walking' over to the island. Yesterday I played with a player who played with the water set for the first time. I had generated a layout which prevented the players to get easily to a group of orks - by placing a river section between them and the orks - to prevent swimming I described it as heavy current.

Well - it was the first time he had seen the river.

Player - I jump over.

Player - rolls a 19 - including skill and high strengh he gets a jump check of impressive 25 !!

GM - taking out the tape measure - lets see how far you have managed. Hmm - looks like you managed to jump 2/3 of the river. We could discuss if this was a standing or running start but it wouldn't matter. I had placed him 5 feet off the river after a teleport but the player didn't even look.

An impressive jump - never seen a dwarf jump that far. At least the armour helped him to go down like a stone and his strength helped to grep a stone to hold on until a grappling hook was lowered down to him.

I have to admit - his extremly lucky roll had me sweaty for a moment. This should be impossible to jump over - hmm - but what does the rule say for such an impressive jump. The other part of the group was as surpised as I was.

The beauty of the DF is - there is no discussion. Yep - you rolled a 19 - quite lucky. But as you can measure it you get a clear answer.

Off course - we had the size creep discussed elsewhere. Having a 32mm figure and having a 25mm distance ...

Tough ;-) He won't do it again

Yeah, these rivers being about 3 inchs wide are great, why i used them for tha bases of my lava stuff. When the players did the jump check math they all never dreamed of trying to jump it, then the jedi had the bright idea of using the old Yoda X-wing trick.. stupid jedi...

Thod, Ghenghis,

Don't you just love it when the players do the math and figure with a roll of a 20 they might make it and then they roll anyway? It makes for some great role playing afterwards.

Well - the player didn't do the math. He just looked at the layout - saw some water inbetween - and just.

I just tried to do the math and get approx. to the following results (D&D 3rd edition)

Human with base speed 30 needs a jump check of 30 to cross 15 feet
For a dwarf with base speed 20 this goes up to 44
If I calculate heavy armour and base speed of 15 this goes to 60

The difference between a standing start and a running start is an extra 4, 6 or 8 based on base speed.

With his skill and strength he got a +6 on the roll.

So depending on the scenario I use (no - he definately isn't a human) we are talking a roll of 38 on a d20 in the most optimistic case and a roll of 62 on the same d20 if I rule standing start and base speed 15.

And the funny bit is - this was his second failed jump over water. He had an earlier attempt to jump a smaller 10 feet channel from my sewer set. This one was an impossible jump as there was an invisible barrier preventing to cross by any person or item (only magic would reach through). He figured this one out when he bounced back and took 5 points of damage running into a 'wall'.

He actually might have been short already on that attempt - but I didn't bother to check how far he would have jumped.

Needless to say - it was an entertaining evening.

I'm totally thrilled about this new set!

Should we infer from this thread that the next new releases are going to be in August? Are there going to be 'preorder specials' in June or July? Or is there anything coming up before that?

There is even a non-lake type piece that cavern fans have been wanting for years.
Now that has me wondering what the heck is in this set!
Darn it, must start saving $ again.... :D

Okay, Jeff, delete this if you need to. I'll understand.

My two cents: cave entrance

Well, okay, perhaps not, but it IS something that a lot of people have been asking for over the years and it is NOT a lake piece but IS a Cavern piece.

Looking foward to the new sets and my new debt total. ;)

62 sets and counting. In addition, a boatload of individual pieces or sets of pieces.

My two cents: cave entrance
I think it's either that or a large stalagmite/rock formation, one that takes up a decent amount of room and makes for good cover.

OR it could be a natural/organic stair piece, something to access any higher stacked levels -- the caverns, esp. with the newer sets, look AMAZING with higher and lower levels, but the only way for players to get around is with out-of-place wooden or stone staircases -- or imaginative spelunking....

I'm hoping for all three!

1) Cave entrance
2) Natural rock staircase and
3) Large stalagmite formation

...*laughs*...hey it's DF right! Anything is possible!
