Beware the Ebay Fraud 7 Years, 10 Months ago
Hey guys,
I recently was bidding on a collection of DF material on ebay (item: 300054042103). I didn't win it because it sold out of my price range, but recieved a private email the next day offering me a second chance on the auction from a "Jim Garder".
Jim offered the sets to me at almost half what the auctions won for so I thought, cool I'm getting a deal.
However, the official offer I got from ebay asked for a downpayment on "this vehicle???" using western union. The mail was from actions@consultant.com which I did not identify as any official ebay address.
Through several communications the seller told me that he couldn't use paypal due to a "corrupt" account due to hacking.
The address listed for the western union payment was in Rome, Italy while the auction listed for Des Moines IA, USA.
I then went to read about western union scams through ebay (just google it) and noticed that my situation seemed to match them exactly.
I contacted Jim with my concerns and he tried to bully me into sending payment anyway.
So, in the end I've reported him to ebay, but I figured I might as well post here to put the word out that the scammers know no bounds and that buyers should beware.... even with our gaming accessories.
I hope this warning helps someone.
Yours,
Sam

The best way to deal with second chance offers from eBay is to go directly to the eBay site using your web browser (do NOT use a link from an e-mail), and check your "My Ebay" page. If you have a legitimate second chance offer, you can deal with it there.

I would routinely get emails, allegedly from eBay, asking for me to "verify my information." I got in the habit of doing a check of the Properties of the email, and would clip and paste this into an email to spoof@ebay.com, which is where you send reports of fraudulent emails. This lets their legal dobermans go to work.

Sadly, I think there isn't much they can do against fraud from outside the U.S. It's tough enough getting the courts to get serious for domestic internet fraud cases, but other governments often turn a very blind eye to the practices.

But, on the plus side, the director of the FBI has told me that I have a fortune in gold waiting for me in Nigeria! Whoo hoo!

Sam

Thanks for alerting the community. Sad that people are using something like DF for these schemes. I guess just because it sells for decent price on eBay.

Stefan, you lucky dog! Venicia, que belle! Enjoy, enjoy, and pay close attention to all that is beautiful - the canals, the gondolas, the buildings, but most importantly of all, the lovely lady that you married.

May the romance go on forever.

Out of all the european countries I've been to (all but 5) Italy has been my favourite place to visit.
The food, the people, the weather, the buildings, the beaches... everything is perfect.
Venice is a very unique city, the winding maze-like streets attracted me most to it. There aren't nearly as many canals as i expected. The gelato is great, the courtyards are amazing, and the gondola's are waaaay to expensive.
Have fun.
Check out the Pompei, Sorrento, Capri area if you get a chance (loads of ruins, beaches, and beautiful weather there). Florence is also amazing for it's buldings, art, and museums.
Cheers,
Sam
