... .

That's not to discount RF*s point about GW's losses, but they typically send things through regular mail. Their costs are probably cheaper to replace lost packages rather than insure, or use a trackable carrier, for all of them. As far as the "yacking" ... that seems a bit of an over-simplified conclusion. Neither me, nor my circles of gaming friends, have ever lost a GW package and have never had each other, or random gamers, staking-out our abodes for pending shipments. ... .

See ya !!

Actually Myrthe, when I worked at GW, everything went out either Airborne Express or UPS.
Anything I had to receive after my departure from GW, such as missing parts from blisters and the like, has always arrived via UPS.
Myrthe, I have never seen or been told by anyone in the industry since of GW using normal USPS service for anything other than White Dwarf magazine or for paper correspondence.

As far as the "over-simplified conclusion" concerning "yacking", I have seen one definitive case while with GW so I know it happened at the very least once.
GW legal tracked down and had the local police arrest a culprit in one multi-parcel, multi-address case in the Mid-West that was SIMPLY based on a single gamer listening to the yacking of other gamers at three separate game shoppes.
GW Legal could only prove his involvement in seven missing parcels, but he may have been involved in as many as 22 Missing-In-Transit packages.
He was definitely using decent intel gathering skills to not have to pay for a single GW item for a serious piece of time.
Moreover, he was stealing White Dwarf magazines sent to subscribers as well, but he had a system that no one person lost more than two issues a year.
So yes Myrthe, "yacking" was a REAL problem, at very least once; if something is found to be a problem once, more often than not, you have simply found the foolish member of the cadre and it happens much more than just once.
It may not be a valid issue if every gamer in the shoppe is your friend and acquaintance, but I do not think all of you live in such a small town, hamlet or village that this is possible, no?

Some folks here have their parcels delivered all the time to work (lucky you folks), but some folks here work at places that frown about such personal parcels because they could be security threats and/or work distractions.
I know I am only allowed about three parcels a year at most before I get the "Eye" and at number four, I receive a chat opportunity.
I do not think I am the only one here in that situation; some folks here work for the government or other like corps.

Actually Myrthe, all of the above-board shipping companies do encourage their corporate customers to use plain boxes without indicative logos or packaging.
I have personally sat in meetings where USPS, UPS and another company I cannot remember right this moment encouraged the company I worked for at the times to not use specially marked boxes in the U.S.A. and this advice got down to severe brass taxes when dealing with foreign postal markets.
GW had a serious problem in Italy back in '97 with appropriated parcels, whether in standard post or even within the APO system.
The APO problem got the American government steamed and so they and the Italians ended up prosecuting several civilians concerning the matter.
GW never got a chance to lay their mitts on the people because both governments had already prosecuted them with an inch of their lives, and the British government decided GW had to let the other two have their fun.
So yes, corporate packaging is not a happy-happy thing for any of the carriers out there, even UPS or DHL.

Any time you have something delivered where a personally known responsible party is not present to receive it, you are throwing craps.
It is typically only a matter of time before you roll up snakes-eyes if you do not have a reliable party waiting for the parcel for you every time.

everything i've ever recieved from GW while i was in the UK (jan 99- jan 05) and since i've been living stateside, as always been shipped via USPS regular mail.

not disputing what you've seen or had shipped to you, and i'm sure that there's ups shipping options for GW when i order stuff, but it's blasted expensive enough without paying extra for shipping.

When I worked they did not have a USPS option.
I guess now I just like the reliability of Brown so that is always what I ask for, especially since GW is paying for S&H since it is their fault the item(s) are missing.
Not that I am doing much asking off anything these days of GW, but every so often, there are older box sets or blisters that I have not opened until recently which are missing something.
So far they have been able to take care of the problem, but I do not how long it will be before my luck runs out.

Well, RF*, your experience is your experience, I suppose. Just last week I received a replacement from GW in a nice padded envelope via USPS. And, a few weeks back, I received a little box via USPS from them. Whatever. Regardless, it's their responsibility to get the product to the customer. I don't really care how they do it and, like I mentioned, I've never had any problem with any shipper on any occassion.

I also have worked with various shipping companies and we were never steered away from using our corporate identity on packages. Quite the contrary ... one carrier even went so far as to offer custom packaging with our logo. Again, your experience is yours ... but not everyone's.

And the conclusion on "yacking" ... yes, "one definitive case", in my book, is an over-simplification and little cause for such broad generalization. A "REAL problem, at very least once" is not grounds for a blanket condemnation. This is a big world with all sorts of people trying to scam others ... it happens, simple as that. But, in the grand scheme of things and the sheer amount of product shipped, it's minute.

And, let's steer this back to DF here, how much of the general public world-wide knows about DF or would recognize their logo? And, in the big picture of shipping expensive product, DF isn't a "big fish" at all. Let's keep it in context.

I'm all for the better shipping boxes, logo or no logo. Great job DF !!!

Yes, I agree with Myrthe, having the new DF shipping boxes is GREAT Jeff; that way the actual storage box is not damaged from transit.
Just them being a bit less loud would be better, IMO.

So Myrthe, you have had no shipping problems - FABULOUS!
Guess what?
Neither have I!
On the other hand, I have heard from plenty of gamers though that would and do say otherwise.
Yes, each missing parcel may be a minute fraction of what is shipped; that is it is until the problem ACTUALLY happens to YOU personally.
Then it is the end-of-the-world; just ask any other gamer here.

Or it is a major deal if it keeps happening to the same company's parcels.
It definitely adds up over time on the negative side of the ledger.
Ask Jeff or Stefan.
No company can keep taking hits on missing parcels and survive, especially not smaller companies like Dwarven Forge.
Sometimes, taking the quieter path that is less flashy is what some companies just have to "bite the bullet" and do to save their profits.

As far as the thieves concerned in the matter Myrthe, we are not talking about the general public and basic thievery, are we?
We are speaking of dishonest people with a very specific hobby - gaming.
We all here know them in some variety: the thief, the cheater, the I-can-never-be-beaten, etc.
Anyway, those people, who would bother to steal gaming product, are going to know the logos of the industry and will feel no remorse from taking what your hard-earned money has purchased.
Plain and simple!

Myrthe, I would agree with you in this matter, but logic dictates that is just not the correct course because it would be fallacious.
Your experience professionally dealing with shipping is outside the gaming industry evidently; mine's not.
My experience is in an industry that is labelled by many large corporations and retailers out there as a high general theft, high shoplifting industry; your's evidently not.
Carriers may feel comfortable shipping your industry's product in loud, obvious company logo parcels; meanwhile they are not, from what I have been told, comfortable doing so with gaming product.
Having worked for one of the largest companies in the industry, along with a good bit of background elsewhere in the industry, has given me some insight and seasoning that we just do not share.

You disagree with me despite actual on-the-ground familiarity so I guess it will just have to stay at that point, yes Myrthe?
Such is life at times and messes occur, but then again, such is life.

Once again, Jeff, it is great that DF has come up with shipping boxes; they will make life much better for those of us who use the white boxes for storage and personal transport.
I just wish DF had picked the quieter road box-wise.
