Well, I mostly would agree with you L, but I would say that your point about setting particular environments, to me, is a target for the future. For now (to me) I would need to be capable of building a good sized evil layout, in which later, set differences between one chamber and another.

Of course, Additions are additions, and that should mean that they are designed for the purpose you've said, but in this time, given the past mistake (in my opinion) with the passages in DoE, I had expected some correction for balance included in this additions set.

Greetings!

I really like the look of most of what the expansion is set to include, but I have to differ about whether or not what we really need is more walls etc.

I'd like to see something that allows me to make a DoE "Hall of Audience" or "Portal to the Abyss" or "Sacrificial Altar" or "Arcane Library of Death." Maybe it'd be furnishings, maybe it'd be building elements. I don't know. I don't have any specific preferences, myself. But I do feel that there is limited appeal, for me at least, of making essentially the exact same room over and over and over and over -- you know?

In some sense i think a Set should always include some sort of wall and or floor, becuase it helps to increase your exsisting building material. With Alpha i loved the big huge floors, but it got to the point where i quickly ran out of Walls for the new larger set ups. For me i want what ever i am putting in to add to what i have with what i am getting in a perfect world to expand my options. instead of making it so i can't do more and end up doing less (the addation of the big floors limited my builds in a few cases becuase i didn't have the walls to inclose the new larger area). Beta solved a lot of the floor issues for Sci fi with long walls to go with the big floors, making it so i could drop a big room quickly and easliy.

While yes it may not be as "spiffy" to just create a bigger room in one go, in many cases we are just creating the same rooms over and over with any DF set. That is largerly what the DF is for in my mind. The Creation of the area everything is happening in, the ability to creat the specific Audience hall i think does come in more with the "furnishings" or dressing of the area, and to me not so much is a building element of the structure it is in.

Unless you go the route of like some of the Fantasy sets where the section is the element (like a wall with a window, or the wall with the secret door, bookcase etc) In many respect i really like that idea becuase it increase my build abilty with new item, i.e. i have a wall that has as part of it a book case so if i want to make a library with the bookcases if i have 4 book cases i have 4 new walls and haven't "lost" the option of using 4 walls some place else, like i would if i had to add furnishings or dressing to make the library.

But the problem i see with it as a building element is that then that wall is always a bookcase, and it becomes less usefull. While i must say i do really like the idea of Build elements with specific purposes (the book case and rug in MBS are good examples) they may not always be used, and you can end up with some none functional bits so it is something i think has to be done in a sparing manner, a mix of furnishings and predesigned build elements are great...

Eh just my 2 credits.

All

I just checked the layout and tried to count a little bit. It seems to me there are no new (straight) walls in the set. Jeff made a lot of use of corners - it's a quite nice layout - but it seems to me he only managed this size by using corners in several places. All walls together seem to be from 2 DOE sets.

There is >1 stair (assuming 2 Extension sets) and there also seem some additional diagonal walls. All in all - I really like what I see. But I also chime in - this seems to me a lack of walls. In my Evil temple I ran out of walls. Seems this set won't help in this regard.

Well - just be imaginative. Use some corridors around a big palace and voila - some more walls. But really helpful would have been some cut down floor pieces which would allow to integrate the corridors into the rooms without some gaps.

in my opinion doe is mainly for special rooms not only because of its look but also because it is limited. we just won´t be able to build a big selection like with the classic line or cavern sets. don´t get me wrong i like it like that - players know it´s getting serious when their pc touches the first doe tile. but even as a special room i would like to be to able to build them a bit bigger. especially with all those nice new pieces that have to be surround by walls....

Yeah -- just to be clear, I'm not saying I don't want more pieces like this. I'm just saying it isn't at the top of my list of wants for DoE. A bigger room would be nice, but it wouldn't change my impression, evaluation, or pattern-of-use for the set. If an expansion came out that gave me a chance ot make an actual "setting" with DoE with distinguishable rooms, I would probably use the set more, like it more, think differently about it. That, therefore, becomes what I think is most needed. But that would also require more basic building pieces, and I would like to see more of them in general.

I have been sorely tempted lately to take a picture of some kind of setup involving all the styles of set DF has released, but I'm having too much fun with Venice right now. Still, DoE and SF are the only things missing from Venice, so it's a good "catalogue" locale for showing off DF's variety... With all this DoE talk, maybe I'll add some kind of evil petting zoo in the back or something...

Geez, fellas! I must be looking at this set with different eyes than some of you. The more I look at the pictures of this DOE set the more excited I am about "having" it! ...no reservations here at all. I think it will be VERY versatile in layouts and use. Come on guys, this is the Den Of Evil!! Am I going to have to buy 4 sets myself and invite all of you out here to Phoenix to show you what you can do with this set-up? *laughs*

L - as soon as you get your mitts on this thing, I know we'll all be seeing the photos of your "Diablo Lair w/torture chamber", "Wizard's Laboratory", "Warlock's Library", "Necromancer's Sanctuary", "Mephisto's Prison", "Dante's Purgatory", "Town Square's Asylum", "Petting Zoo in Venice"...or whatever! To me, the possibilities are endless with this thing. We'll just have to wait and see the specifics of the pieces offered to see just how creative we can get with this set. For all we know, there might be more to the set...maybe even more down the pipeline???

Stefan and Jeff - The detail and work on this set looks stunning to me. I LOVE the details in the large floors and stairs....and the bases to the platforms! The way you put those faces in there like that -- very unusual! At times, the faces appear to have "waving arms"...other times the faces look like they are being pulled in by tentacles...and other times they look like lost souls tortured within flames -- Salvador Dali gone mad, almost! It's way cool in effect. The Imp-like gargoyles (for lack of a better term) in the walls and the pillars are striking as well. Based on the DOE sets that I own and the pictures that have been shown for this additional set, I score this total package with a 96 out of 100. From me, that's a great score! The only thing keeping me from scoring it perfect is that I feel that the walls (and maybe even the floors) should have had black somewhere in there. I think the contrast between black and the reds of the Diablo archway would have been pretty cool! Again, that's just a personal feeling and certainly a minor hit on this beautifully designed set. Fantastic work here! I'm really looking forward to getting this one.

WoW!,
The DOE expansion is very nice. I am good for at least one. The only problem I have with the whole DF thing is its getting hard to keep up with all the sets. Its like an addiction. Its not enough to have a little you must have it all! I'm on set 15 and I can see no end in site. I've been playing D and D for 28 years now and this is the only way to go. My wife just came down stairs ( the basement is the gaming room stone walls, swords, the whole nine yards) and saw what I was drooling over ... BUSTED! Well christmas and birthday comming up.
Keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to the order date.
