I wonder what the religious ramifications of asking for a Den of Evil additions set on Christmas would be....

::At Church::
"So, what did you get for Christmas Robert"

"uhm.....errrr..... the Den of Lightness and Pretty Princess Ponys!!!, with clown masks! Yeah, thats the ticket!"

Robert;

Simple solution;

"Oh, I just got a DF Dee-Oh-Eee set. It was nice." and walk away, or otherwise change the subject.

Even in church, sometimes you just gotta tell a slight fib on Christmas - or it WILL be your last Merry one!

Good luck, friend.

See ya!

I like the cool new things in this set.

Hope that it will include 6" Walls, too
(on the photos there are none)
These we need badly.

Hope for a 4"x4" floor piece with a
pool of lava or blood.

More doors would be also neat.

WOW!! Now that is something to get excited about! I love those stairs! Now that set looks like it will add some atmos-FEAR...and with the promise that this is just "some" of the pieces!! ...NICE!

Thanks for posting the pics, Jeff!

Ok, I let it sink in a bit, after just viewing these photos a while ago. The double-Diablo archway is very cool and I absolutely love the blood-red there. The artwork in the walls, pedestals and stairs really grab me as the focal point in this layout.

The lavender pastel in the gargoyle bases is...interesting. I guess we'll have to wait and see the "other" pieces of the set to appreciate how they will all mesh together.

Great teaser pics with the spiders and fog! I can't wait to see more shots. Let me know when I can preorder. I am ready today!

Not to pull any punches but the dragon skull heads are really dorky looking (not menacing at all) and WAY too red. The lavender coloring on the pillar bases is hideously tacky. Disappointing if this is the final paint job--despite the overall usefulness of the set. When do we get to see the rest of the pieces?

Whoo, way to come out swinging!

Well, a few of us have mentioned some reservations about the colors. I worry that the proliferation of different colors could be a problem if they don't mix well together -- it could end up looking kinda harsh, not right, with all these colors.

Plus, the colors are a bit "pastel" -- the lavender is one thing, but the color on the dragons isn't quite right for me, either. It's like a thin red inkwash over a silver base, to me. I'd rather a dark, bloodred crimson with a deep black inkwash, something bloody and menacing. This is too shiny and light, I fear.

The sculpt on the dragons doesn't thrill me or bother me. I prefer the demon arch, but these are neat. I'd have to see more pics, or see them in person, to get a real feel for it. It seems like it could be a real neat piece, but I agree that the color isn't doing it any favors.

Essentially, I think this set might require repainting for me, which is a real shock since I never have thought that about other DF sets. But DoE has always struck me as slightly too light, and the expansion looks to continue that trend.

Granted, this is all just my personal taste -- I know a lot of people are crazy about DoE and excited about the expansion, so I wouldn't say that this counts as objective critique. I think tihs color scheme would work for a palace or an elven abode, but for something sinister and terror-oriented it just should be darker....

L

EDIT: Actually, come to think of it, looking at the pics again -- the dragon skulls look like meat! Specifically, they look like actual skulls that have been skinned. The marbling, the blending of reds and tans and so forth, it looks like musculature to me. That might make them look quite narsty, but I still wonder how well they'll blend in with the rest of the set.

Although I'm not a great fan of pieces that are designed with a specific creature look. I do like the demon/dragon archway much more so, due to the gaping mouth feature(s).

There are sooo many possibilities with this! Just imagine what could come from these...

Fire, poisonous gas, swarms of insects -you name it!

Although I do generally prefer the concept of more generic pieces (that focus on the building materials more than specific creatures) myself, I will admit that this piece does have considerable versatility as well.

Overall, I think it's a great piece.

Well........The Purple color of the pillars were a wink to Robert E. Howard's descriptions of the purple towers of the ancient lands of Xaltotun...I'm a real Conan fan...and yes, the demons are meant to be somewhat bloody or gored or perhaps skinned...To me, the colors are quite sinister...

In reflection, I suppose as we start to create items with colors or designs that are not mostly straightforward it will be hard to please everyone since it can be a matter of personal taste. I suppose for those who are not happy the few areas (not pleasing) can be painted over easily enough...I say this not in a nasty or testy way, but as encouragement to experiment and customize...(many of you already do so to great effect)
Sorry if my interpretations or visions are not accepted by all, there are no surveys or "color tests" done...just the crazy inspirations of this wacky geek...

Sincerely,
Stefan

That would be Archeron (?) - wirth every ones favourite lich/wizard Xaltotun. Which Conan story was that - it was one of my favourites particularly the final battle with the massed charge of the Aquilonean knights down the hill.

Yes! I think it's spelled Acheron? That whole book is a work of inspired genius! It was originally titled "The Hour of the Dragon" when it was printed in Wierd Tales magazine in several installments in the 30's? Later it made it to paperback with the awesome Frank Frazetta cover art, and was titled: Conan the Conquerer...Interesting to note that Oliver Stone says (in the Conan DVD) that he originally wanted to use that story as the screenplay for the first Conan movie!

As you can see...I'm totally geeked out on this stuff....

He also says that he wanted to release a Conan movie every year much like the James Bond franchise...
