Cavernous River and Walls Set UPDATE 8 Years, 11 Months ago
i can fully understand the reasons for df acting this way and i can also follow the thoughts mentioned by my fellow forum memebers - for me as a (not very rich) european df was always somehow limited...

why not open up e-mail list for items with limited run, out of stocks specials or singles - when a certain amount of entries is on that list you have a prepaid reissue of that item/set for people on that list.

besides that everything that keeps df on the market is ok with me - in my opinion too many small specialist companys have gone of the market allready.

Cavernous River and Walls Set UPDATE 8 Years, 10 Months ago
Just tossing my own opinions into the ring - I concur with the thoughts of all those about about the Limited Run as opposed to a true Limited Edition. Even though I saw the DF MM stuff when it first came out, there wasn't any way I could get into the market at the time. When I finally started making money in 2002, and saw that not only was DF around and expanding, I jumped in! Now, I've got some 15 of the SF sets and close to that many of the Fantasy/Cavern sets - even though I've only had the chance to use them a handful of times, I KNOW I will be using these as soon as I get time to Game (ie. about 3 years from when I jumped aboard - now thankfully only ~6 more months!).

Even as I started acquiring the DF, I didn't need anyone to label the Narrow Passages sets as a LE for me to know that it didn't look like it was going to be easy to get more of them - the market just dictated that there wasn't enough demand to re-produce it. For me, I had to accept it as a "well, I waited too long so it's my bad" attitude - and try to get as much of it as I could from gamestores that had them sitting on the shelves, eBay, individual pieces, etc. Now, if I had saw that it was a LE set, and that was the reason I couldn't find any more, I would have been rather suspicious that other sets were going to be that way and in the future I might never get something I'd need/want simply because of a decision of a company to make a LE set rather than it being MY mistake.

Ok, so in summary, I like the spelling out of things as Limited Run - basically, as everything is right now as we may never see them again - BUT, that leaves open the possibility for the company in 5-10 years to return to the product to re-make it as necessary (IE. with the thought that every 5-10 years, there's a new "crop" of fans who now want everything that us "old timers" have). Perhaps even setting up a yearly "poll" of which set(s) do the fans want re-made. Take the ones that meet the minimum order number to turn a profit (500, 1000, whatever the case for that set), and then say, "Here's the set people want re-made - it's now up for pre-order, and when everyone has paid up, we'll re-make it."

By specifically making things LE, DF closes the door to that possibility, regardless of how remote - and will turn people off.

In any case, thanks for hearing our thougths! And we hope to see you guys continuing to make good stuff!

My "Two Pennies" on this topic (for what it is worth) is that essentially your problem seems to be a cash flow/investing in ordering new stock vs having enough sets in stock to meet customer demand problem. (Hope this makes sense?) This is actually quite an envious position to be in, if rather frustrating for the company and its customers. It sounds like if you had more capital then you could sell more stuff more quickly and therefore hold stock levels more evenly. This could be tied in nicely with an EU franchise. It would need careful planning but hey, look at how much money Games Workshop has made with this approach from the opposite direction over the pond. Possible opportunity rather than a threat? The alternative to this is that people like Games Workshop (i.e. Forge World) will copy your product and monopolise their hold on the EU market - they have already started to do this with their new resin Sci-Fi base terrain. This would be a shame as you make the best 3d dungeon terrain on the market. Paying double price on an already premium quality but also priced sets is just too painful for the mass market in the EU.

Good Luck!
