Cavernous River and Walls Set UPDATE 8 Years, 9 Months ago
This set is really going to be something else.

The only problem for me is that my current cavern system is extremely lacking (only one set each of Cavern and Cavern Passages), so I'll have to add some more of these sets in addition to the cavern river sets I'm going to buy. (More a consideration than a problem, really. Still, something to think about.)

Hopefully, we'll get some news about the composition of this new set soon to help guide our purchases. (Hint hint, Jeff ;))

Jeff,

I don't remember, does that include Cavernous Passages as well, or will they be in the April container(s)?
Either way, I see I'm spending the IRS repayment largely at DF.Com!

See Ya, and Happy Holidays!!

There are no Cavernous Passage sets coming in Feb. or April, and unfortunately they are about out of stock now. We hope to have them back in stock in June/July...but we will have to see how sales go this Spring.

Cavernous River and Walls Set UPDATE 8 Years, 8 Months ago
Well...I just got back from the annual Big Meeting with Stefan, and he brought the just-painted Cavnerous River and Walls Set with him. He was sending them off to the factory after the meeting.

I gotta say I was blown away by the pieces I saw! The level of detail is incredible, and the paint job was very cool. The only bummer was that there was no clear resin "water" in place -- as that is done in the factory. But in about 3 weeks we should have a sample set back...and I can't wait! Collectors are gonna freak when they see these at Origins and Gen Con!

We did decide one important thing about the set -- and most future releases. This set will be a limited edition set as well -- just like the Den of Evil. Why, you ask? Good question.

Over the last year Dwarven Forge has changed -- along with the gaming market. We have quit the 3-tier system and we have gone direct-mail/convention sales. The traditional gaming market is also shrinking/changing dramatically as it re-defines itself in the rapid-changing world of gamers.

We have also shifted our "self-image" from that of a game accessory company to that of a company that provides cool collectibles for gamers. We have ramped up the quality of our latest sets, and by introducing the limited-edtion characteristic we have rewarded our collectors with sets that will retain or increase value. We will keep the core sets unlimited, but most new sets will only be available for a certain time -- and only to those who follow and collector our stuff. Personally, I think it is just plain cooler to own limited-edition sets -- and know that I have a piece of something that is special and cool in the gamer world.

Finally, as a little Christmas present form Dwarven Forge to you, here is a little sneak peek photo of the painted Cavernous River and Walls Set. Note that the clear resin "water" has not yet been added.

What Sets are designated as core?
Passages and Rooms from each of the three lines, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Caverns?

And since i only do Sci-Fi and Caverns does this mean Alpha when it's gone is gone, the same with Beta? (if so darn i wish i had the money to pick up a few more Alpha last week...)

Some RPG and mini stats including the Exodus and AAT (along with good source of a Mini scale version of the AAT).

I find the "going the limited edition" route disappointing. I have 21 big boxed sets but those I aquired through careful savings and setting goals. That is very hard to do with the release of multiple sets in a year that are first come first serve. Very disappointing. It is too bad that this is the direction that the market is going. I always enjoyed the idea that these sets would be around so I could gather them as I can. While I have a large collection, I don't "collect" them. They get used in my gaming. I don't get any special thrill about my Den of Evil sets being rare. I get a thrill out of seeing the players "ooh, and ahh" at the pieces and how they relate to the game.

My 2 cents.
Long time gamer and buyer of dwarven forge products. Doesn't like "collector" aspect of marketing. But do what you gotta do. I figured I'd just let you know that not all of us collectors like the new "collector" idea. And since you guys like to know what we are thinking...there are my thoughts.

Thanks for the feedback. We have no plans to make new releases in Sci-Fi line limited edition -- only other lines. All four sets should be available until sales wane below making it feasible for us to carry them.

And DaggerdaleDM...don't worry about sets selling out fast. It should take over a year for any of them to do so, and after that there is always the Ebay route. Doing this limited edition thing allows use to release more (and better!) sets -- and that should make most people happy. Without the Den of Evil in 2005, DF would be scrapping by to launch one set in 2006. It makes that big a difference with our cash flow.

Market dictates all. If DF cannot make money, the company will cease to exist and all sets will truly become limited edition. Do whatever to stay alive and prosper.

Jeff

I understand the going limited decision - but the question is - which sets should be core. The new cavern river set seems a great addition and enhancement on the cavern set - with walls you can remove. Therefore it strikes me odd if it should become limited.

A set like the Ogre-Den would have made an ideal limited edition. With the river set I doubt this.

This also raises the question - what happens to the non-US 'collectors'. We got screwed with the Den of Evil by paying double (which is USPS and Tax-man - not your fault). I can't see limited sets hitting any European distributor - but paying double makes it hard to keep up buying.

The first shipment of DOE seems to have been a great success - but it seems the frenzy has cooled a little bit.

Going limited certainly will boost early sales - as some people are afraid to miss out - will it work long term if used too often?

My 2p
