Seems this Holiday is slowly degrading to nothing but a shopping day. It's still a day for some of us though. Thank all supreme beings that I am in the VFW, we still celebrate it.

To all vets - thank you. I love you all brothers and sisters.

Too true.
The school children do not even get the day off anymore.
To get them involved in a Veteran's Day activity, we have to bring it to the school.
Not enough ambulatory vets here to hit up every school at 11:11.
Some children do not even understand what "veteran" means.
It helps to correct that lack with the 116 Combat Brigade is rotating home from Iraq now; puts all of the veterans more in the spotlight.

Yeah, I had to explain to somebody recently the difference between Veteran's Day, Memorial Day and Armed Forces Day.

It was kinda sad.

Yay Veterans day...
My dad was a naval officer in Vietnam... PT boats...

Anyhow, I teach school, and we got the day off. Furthermore the JROTC kids go around to all the teachers who were in the service and give them some sort of gift the day before Veteran's day. As for the commericializing of such a holiday...

Uhm...if Christmas is not immune to the side effects of capitalism, why should any holiday be...

There are 25 million vets in the U.S., this day is important and will continue to be... do not worry about what other people do on this day, if you keep it special, than that is all that matters.

Your district had the day off?
Where in the U.S.A. are you?
Lucky devil!

Actually celtchief, it is VERY important what the other 250 million Americans do on this day.
If they do not remember the sacrifice of the few for the many, then that sacrifice will be forgotten and what it provided will be lost.
Additionally celtchief, there will be more Vietnams where the military does their job and wins by "noon" and then the civilians come in and give away that victory before "evening" is over.

Spoiled civilians threaten to do that very thing now with the Iraq situation celtchief.
Perseverance seems to be severely lacking in the American psyche these days; only addiction in many idiotic forms seems to power many Americans in these sorry days.
"We" seem to have lost the ability to truly seem beyond ourselves and what "we" want, and that is what I want today, not tomorrow - who cares about tomorrow.
"I WANT IT NOW AND ONLY FOR ME!" is the constant refrain from these spoiled brat "citizens".
Most Americans, especially the media, seem to have lost the ability to respect much of anything; then again, they cannot even respect themselves.

Seriously celtchief, if veterans and their families do not constantly preach Veteran's Day and like items, I am very concerned about where this country will end up.

MLV,

I thankyou, not many people remember the things we have done!
I for one appreciate the acknowledgment. :)

If I'm not sitting here on my computer then i'm at the VA Hospital being teeated for my cancer. Which was caused by the strest for seeing more that i should have for one lifetime.

well, listen to me, still mad after 30+ years of coming home to nothing! No one to meet you at the airport, no welcome back of any type.

Sorry guys I can lose it sometimes.
well at least Golden Correl is giving a free meal to Vets tomorrow here in Houston! :D

Fizban,

It Sounds Like You are One of our Older Forum Lurkers? The previous Post Suggests A Certain Police Action in South East Asia? If So I Was too Young For that Particular War, And though I Was Reactivated For Gulf One I Was Fortunate to Serve State Side...

Regardless I Felt a Little Awkward after all Was Said And Done, and I Received A Campaign Pin about a Year after Coming Home, I Mean Why was I Being Given such Recognition When So Many Before Me were Not Properly Recognized... Then I Realized that it was Less a Matter of Gratitude and More a Matter of the Defence Department Wanting to be "Politically Correct" This time around by making sure that they at least Paid Token Attention to those Involved... Then Came GWS, and they were Right Back where they Had Been...<Sigh>...

And I Said that I would Not Get political...<Chuckle>...
