Modern Palaces VII 7 Months, 2 Weeks ago
A few years ago, I had the opportunity to take some pictures of actual palaces. Now that some time has passed, I would like to share those pictures just to show what they looked like.

Please, no politics. I really want this to be about the architecture.

This is the Ba'ath House. It wasn't actually a palace, nor a residence, but it was still a very important and lavishly decorated building.

Taken from the roof of the Perfume Palace, visible at the lower left. That's a residence in the middle distance. Beyond that is the Ba'ath House, exclusively for high party officials. There is a small auxiliary building on the left.

From across the lake.

Across the lake again, with one of the little islands in the way on the right.

This is the more-or-less south side of the building, by the way, and technically the back.

And this is the east side of the building. The recess is actually a boat landing -- there's another one just like it on the other side.

And another long view.

At the front (north) side of the building.

The front of the building and the main entrance.

The northeast corner room -- the swimming pool.

The building is perched on top of concrete posts, over the lake.

Like so.

Main entry

The front door. Once again, I don't know what it says.

Just inside the main foyer, looking toward what used to be a movie theater.

The center of the building is open to the water. No actual access, just a view. Also, lots of evidence of the two hits this building took in the initial bombardment.

Everybody who comes into the Ba'ath House takes a fish-eye lens picture through this window. Here's mine.

The hallway on the east side of the building. The swimming pool is on this end, and the conference room is at the other end, with the boat landing between them.

Double columns at the end of the hall. Note that they don't actually meet the ceiling (anymore). Definitely not load bearing.

A picture of one hallway, taken from the one opposite, and looking through the boat landing.

Ceilings.

Ceiling artwork, a chandelier, and some drapery remnants outside one of the boat landings.

More art.

Another chandelier. The metal is incredibly cheap stuff painted gold, with plastic beads strung on fishing line.

A light mount, sans light.

Closer up, to get the details.

Another.

Last one, promise. This one had air vents on either side. Past it (bottom of picture) you can see the metal framework the stone tiles were mounted on.

The ballroom (in the southwest corner).

Okay, I lied.

In the recessed portion of the ceiling, this used to be the world's longest continuous chandelier.

Closeup of the artwork around the former chandelier.

More writing I can't translate.

The big columns on the outside wall.

And another double column just outside.

At the back (south) end of the building.

Looking out to the auxiliary building. Also known as the "Rather Room", because of a 60 Minutes interview once conducted there.

A view of the Perfume Palace from the back door.

The columns on the south end.

Miscellaneous bits.

Writing at the end of the ceiling recess in the conference room.

The swimming pool.

Stairs. The railing and risers are on the floor.

Access to the service areas of the building, between the movie theater and the west boat landing.

Finally, a boat landing.

Just as a memory prompt, the view from outside.

From the main hallway, looking straight through.

Looking across.

The stairs and a column. The railing and risers are, again, on the floor.

Looking across the boat landing, into the conference room.

Looking across the boat landing on the other side of the building, looking into the ballroom. Even here, you can see the decorative additions on the ceiling.
