Modern Palaces III 11 Months ago
A few years ago, I had the opportunity to take some pictures of actual palaces. Now that some time has passed, I would like to share those pictures just to show what they looked like.

Please, no politics. I really want this to be about the architecture.

Not a palace, the Mother-in-Law Residence was exactly what it on the label. I was never inside the building, but I was able to walk around outside.

From across the man-made lake. The residence is on the left, and was actually built out on the water. The other building is on the main land-bridge leading to Victory Over America and Victory Over Iran.

Because the lakes are shallow, with uniform beds, the water would become very still without some wind to ruffle the surface. Thus I could get some really nice shots of buildings reflected in the water. That's the edge of VOA on the right edge.

This shows how far out into the water the residence was. The little building in the foreground was probably a reception area or a guard shack.

Some more establishing shots.

Across the lake again. From this angle, VOA and VOI are even halves of the structure left of the little island.

A tighter shot, with VOI and the little reception/guard shack to the left. I was fascinated with the octagonal structure with the outward-slanted windows -- I called it the UFO room.

Taken from the roof of VOA, with the Perfume Palace in the background.

Taken from the main road with the zoom maxed out. Probably the most boring angle to view from.

Much better. Note the arched windows.

Getting there.

I love the land bridges. Imagine a melee crossing that, or running across while avoiding creatures popping out of the water.

There are two bridges to the little building, and one leading to the residence.

This is from the very end of the long land bridge. That's actually the reception/guard shack on the left, in front of the residence.

And this is from the reception/guard shack itself.

Finally at the residence itself.

The tower contained an elevator.

Which didn't work. Six months and I never saw a single working elevator.

Just beyond the elevator was a short flight of stairs leading directly into the water. Very convenient for swimmers.

And on the other side of the tower, stairs.

This flight of stairs, and the balcony at the top, are completely unsupported. Nothing underneath.

All of that -- the tower, the elevator, the stairs -- just to get to this door. What lay beyond?

I'll never know. The top of the stairs was it for me. But I took a few more pictures.

Another shot that reveals how things were made. The entire decorative flair was mostly hollow, stone tiles on metal framework.

The UFO room, and one of the metal spiral staircases. I really wish I understood those windows -- are they angled like that to reduce glare, or do they offer a better view of the ducks?

Looking back across the land bridge to VOA and VOI.

And one last look.

It's not a palace by any stretch, but I think this building has lots of features that would make it a fun fantasy setting. The land bridge, the water all around, the balcony sticking out over the water, the spiral stairs, the flat rooftops -- just a bunch of dynamic features that would make for a whole lot of fun.

The landbridge prior to the structure will definitely be getting used in the future...
