Best Chrome and Gold metallic shiny paints 1 Year, 2 Months ago
I'm looking for the best paints to use on plastic minis that will provide a very metallic shiny chrome and/or gold surface. I've seen some minis painted on the web with very realistic chrome surfaces so what I'm looking for should exist out there. Can anybody point me to the very best paints for this application. I have some craft store and reaper paint metallics, but these weren't at all what I was looking for.

Thanks in advance for any tips and advice!

Did you paint the metallic directly on without a basecoat? I have had good results using a dark basecoat with a hint of red, gold, etc then putting the metallic on top of that.

Since the metallic paint is actually metallic flakes, binder, and some pigment, without a basecoat the pigment and flakes separate out, leaving the surface somewhat blotchy. This will happen with and style of metallic paint you try, depending on pigment and flake size.

I guess what I'm looking for is suggestions about which paints are the highest quality for this because I want to buy some new metallic paints :). Which brand have you found has the most metallic flakes gives the highest shine to the surface, etc. I'm wanting a really bright chrome and gold armor for a clockwork dragon I'm painting. I'll let you guess where it came from? ;).

I think Vallejo has some alcohol based metallics that are supposed to be very metal heavy. I haven't used them myself, so I can't actually recommend them, but they're probably worth a look.

You could also try some non-metallic metal (NMM) techniques, but that's definitely more of a challenge.

I've been very happy with Reaper's metallics. I only recently switched from GW/Citadel to Reaper. But like swcorwyn says, you need to have a good base coat down. If you want the metal to "shine" I've had better luck with a white/light color base color -- white under silver, yellow under gold, etc I'm currently working on some dark elves, where i'm using reaper's metalic purple and its not quite what I wanted -- more iridescent and less metallic -- typed to try layering it over a silver. For chrome, I'd probably use more of a light grey as the base coat.

For Wyrmgwear, I'd definitely base coat, or at least prime... I know the whole Bones don't need primer, but the whole hydrophobic nature of them, makes me think they won't take the metallic as easy as regular paint.

I started priming the bones I have been painting anyway. The paint just wasnt sticking well, even after washing. And that was basic non metallic paint..

I think NMM would be very hard on the large flat wings of the "mini" he's talking about. Seems to work better on smaller/curved surfaces.
