I am considering making some things to go along with my DF game tiles whilst waiting for them. It occurred to me that one way to make realistic looking stone walls without sculpting on a large surface would be to use stone effects spray paints.

The challenge is figuring out how to create the division between stone blocks that is not horribly labor intensive. I was thinking that applying a soft wax in lines to the surface would make it easy to create a grid that would not be painted that could then be filled in with my choice of paint marker for a quick but decent looking result. Heck, if I prime it a grout or mortar looking shade then wax the lines and apply stone effects it would probly work too. I'm not sure what the best way to apply the wax would be. Any ideas? Or perhaps some alternatives to the wax?

My workshop will be nearing completion soon and I need projects to cram into it!

My players rue the day I bought "Dragon Mountain". Ever since they give every creature a bit more respect. You never know when the GM will decide that this group is crafty...

I think that someting like pip cleaners or string for smaller lines would work

Thanks for the ideas. I'm not sure if the pipe cleaners or string would prevent enough paint from adhering. The concern with the glue gun is that it might peel away paint. I heard an IRL suggestion to cut down painter's tape to a very fine line and use that. It may work, but I'm not sure if it will stay in place cut that small. I will try to run some experiments and see if string or painter's tape can do the job.

I know that very thin painter's tape exists (about 3mm, 1/8inch wide). That could serve your purpose! I've seen people use some to make custom 1 inch battle grids.

Thanks for the suggestion Biowizard, I will look into that. I think that may work better than tape trimmed down. By the way, I saw the thread about your cubes and I have to say that they look impressive! Very nice job on those.
