Re:What did you pre-order? 2 Years, 3 Months ago
I feel like a kid at Christmas who can’t wait for Santa to arrive. I’m just starting my collection, so I had a lot to consider for this pre-order. I started with the following:

1 Room Set
1 Room & Passage Set
1 Advanced Builder Set
1 Narrow Passage Set
1 Wicked Additions Set
1 Wicked Additions #2 Set
1 Fantasy Floor Set
2 Cavern Sets
1 Cavernous Passage Set
1 Cavernous River and Walls Set
2 Realm of the Ancients Sets
2 sets of 2 Large Columns
1 6" x 6" Square Floors (set of 6)
1 Tavern Accessories
1 Medieval Accessories

Thought that was a good starting point, but then my husband pointed out that if I’m going to get DoE Expansion eventually I might as well pre-order and get $10 off. Add to the above:

2 Den of Evil Expansion Sets

Really thought I was done after that, but last night after reading all the excited posts on this thread I made the mistake of looking at the product page. Add to the above:

2 Medieval Building Sets
2 Medieval Building Expansion Sets
2 Den of Evil Room Sets
2 Den of Evil Wicked Additions Sets
Set of 4 arrow loop passages

Ok, now I’m really done…really...I think. Those pre-orders better ship on schedule or who knows what I may buy next ;)

Wow that is your first order? Mine was a measly 2 sets - your first order exceeds my entire collection. Congrats! I showed my wife how much you ordered and she told me that if I order that much all at once she will murder me in my sleep (I'm not kidding she showed me the knife).

Feymous, I think I should be telling you this...

Jeff is known to give goodies to people that make very very large orders (in the thousands). Send him a nice email (jeff@dwarvenforge.com) telling him how much you are buying at once and you might receive some extra! ;-)

Regarding your order, if you do not yet possess any DF Set, your collection will unfortunately be lacking the basic blocks (The Classical Dungeon Sets): Room Set AND Room & Passage Set. If you already have some of those, then your order is quite balanced and diversified and is starting to look like mine!

I would defintely concor.. an extra room and passage set would be very handy.
They are the basics building block and you can do a lot with them. It can be easy to get distracted by the newer shiny things, but I would say, consider getting the additional room and passage. If you have too drop may be the fantasy floor set. It is nice, But you can use other props to replicate it, till you can get it. The room and passage will get more use.

Two room and passages give you enough for a free flowing basic dungeon. The corridor pieces and doors and floor and corner pieces are essential for doing reasonably large layouts and spread out rooms setups. If you buy those to start with, you can get some great layouts going. Then add the fancier things as you go.

My first purchases were;
Deluxe Room Set x 1
Octagonal Room Set x 1
Room & Passage Set x 1

The Delux and the octagonal appear oop or at least out of stock for near eternity.
If i was starting out again, knowing what i know now. I would favour a basic, two set sets of room and passage to get going with.
And then a room set. Then the wicked additions 1 and 2.

@ Harneloot – Thanks. I may have gone off the deep end, but at least I did it with conviction!

@ Jericho – Technically it’s my second order. I got a couple Woodland sets last month just to see if DF lived up to all the hype. As you can tell from my pre-order, I have fully embraced the crack known as Dwarven Forge. Funny you should mention your wife’s response. I’ve commented several times to my husband that I think the spouse reaction to DF is very different for male and female collectors. The wives of DF collectors seem to be the voice of reason and restraint when it comes to DF purchases, whereas my husband only feeds my addiction. He thinks it’s the coolest hobby I’ve ever had and is keen to show me pictures of cool set-ups/accessories he finds online. I haven’t decided yet whether this is a good thing or whether it will lead to our bankruptcy ;)

@ Biowizard & Ninthgoose – Thanks for the recommendations. When I was deciding on the first part of my pre-order I debated between getting two each of the Room Set and Room and Passage Set or one of each and WA #1 and #2. My husband suggested getting more of the basic sets, but I was seduced by all the cool details in WA. I guess he told me so. What's a person to do in a situation like this? Buy more DF, obviously! I added another Room Set and two more Room and Passage Sets, so I should be covered. You people will be my undoing!

Feymous, with those extras.. you should be fairly well catered for in terms of basic, foundation pieces. A decision you won't regret.

The one issue of DF is, one set goes a good way, but never quite as far as you want..

Its nice to see your husband supports your hobby. The way I look at my DF, is, I have spent less on my sets of DF, than a friend has spent on his first proper set of Golf Clubs. I might not have the biggest collection, certainly not by some of the standards here, but its does what I want it to do, well most of the time..

It also does not go off as it were. Some of my sets date back to 2000.. So i look at it is, as a way of an investment.

Great addition Feymous! You are going to love having all the extra corner pieces and doors those extra basic sets will give you!

Here is my prediction: as you lovingly play with your Dwarven Forge crack you will quickly find that you need more ABS sets and will understand why I voted it as most useful set!

You should make an unboxing video (or at least pictured) as you unpack and revel in the huge amounts of DF awesomeness! (be prepared to be burried by packing peanuts too!)

Huzzah!

Your collection is a GREAT Start! Much bigger than mine was when I started. I have been collecting since Stefan was shipping from his flat the first year. Now that you are adding a few extra basic sets I would consider teh ABS and a few more ROTA and MBS sets. I find ROTA to be useful for temple remains and who can have enough MBS. Once you get your collection you might want to spend a few weeks making different setups based on games you run. I have 2 games that run and leave one setup untouched. The other setup goes up and down. Once you make several setups you will notice what pieces you use more than others and also how big you want to make your layouts. Every february I make a Grand setup with as much of my collection as I can. It is not easy anymore. Anyway it is a lot of fun and I love my hobby. I hope you get out of it as much as I have for the 11+ years I have been collecting.

Welcome to our club Feymous!

Thank you for your patronage!

And as was mentioned here on the forums, I hope you contacted Jeff with your order as he probably would have been moved to add an extra piece or set for you...
