Books and Authors 2 Years, 6 Months ago
I recently finished all of George RR Martin's Song of Fire and Ice series (the ones that are published at least) and am looking for another good series or book. I have read a great deal of fantasy and sci fi including Tolkien, REH's Conan and Solomon Kane, Moorcock, Zelazny, the Thomas Covenant books, Salvatore and other assorted WOTC novels, and the new Pathfinder line of fiction. Many others as well.
I have just read the first two books of The Wheel of Time. I find it okay but not compelling. But I will finish the series eventually.
So, what are some of your favorite books and authors??

I highly recommend this:

The Name of the Wind

There are two books out now, the third is on its way.

If you are in for the long haul this is a good 10 part series. It is a bit involved:

Gardens of the Moon

If you like Martin you should try Joe Abercrombie.

GRRM is my favorite author followed up closely by Abercrombie. They both have a similar writing style.

I dont read a lot nowadays mainly rule books and reference material for work but i did really enjoy the 'Otherland' series of books by Tad Williams.
The 'Wheel of Time' was ok to start with but i think it lost its way later on.

Love all the books you listed and I couldn't do the wheel of time at all either.

I second the Name of the Wind recommendation (reading the second book now)- really excellent, but the third book isn't out yet.

Gardens of the Moon is also very good (I only read the first 3) but it was almost TOO much - too many story-lines and characters.

Others I can highly recommend:

Shannara Series (first 3 and prequel book)by Terry Brooks

Druss the Legend by David Gemmell (really, ALL his books are great)

The Liveship Traders series, the Assassins series and the Tawny Man Series (a total of 9 interconnected books) by Robin Hobb. These may be my most favorite books outside of Tolkien and the Champion Eternal cycle by Moorcock. Can't recommend these enough. Read the Assassin series, then the Liveship, then finish with the Tawny Man. Guarantee you won't be disappointed.

The first few Black Company books by Glen Cook

Kushiel's Dart (3 book series) by Jacqueline Carey

The Night Angel trilogy by Brent Weeks

The Book of Swords series by Fred Saberhagen

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley

Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay

Sandman by Neil Gaiman (Graphic Novels, but really incredible)

His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass) by Philip Pullman

The Earthsea Books by Ursula LeGuin

Enjoy!!!

I have a hard time understanding what you don't like about the Wheel of Time. I guess it's all a matter of taste but I must say it is my personal favorite! With the release of the last and final 14th book announced to be January 2013, and depending on your reading speed, starting to read the saga soon might be a good idea. Books 8-9 or so plainly suck but we jump right back into epic battles/action right after that!

I would also recommend the Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson. There's a very thoughtful magical system and there's always an epical twist at the end of each book that you never see coming.

A third vote for Name of the Wind- I believe the series is called the Kingkiller Chronicles. Well written and original in that the story is told by the hero himself.

Lawrence Watt-Evans' "Ethshar" books, which include:

The Misenchanted Sword
With a Single Spell
The Unwilling Warlord
Spell of the Black Dagger
Night of Madness

I also liked Magic Kingdom for Sale - SOLD! by Terry Brooks.

Awesome!! I knew the DF community would have some great ideas on this. Looks like I have months or even years of good reading ahead. :)

Harneloot, I totally agree about Sandman! Some of the best stories ever! If you haven't already, check out American Gods by him as well. Also Gemell's work is top notch. I was bummed that he passed away. And I first read the Earthsea books back in the late 70s and several times since.

Biowizard, re Wheel of Time, I like it okay, it just isn't living up to my expectations after hearing so much about it. But it is holding my interest, just noy as well as the Martin books.

Thanks for the recommendations guys!

"Wizards first rule" by Terry Goodkind...the whole series is good but the first 2 books are best...

"Sheepfarmer's Daughter" by Elizabeth Moon...starts without much fireworks but stick with it...

I read through the latest Song of Ice and Fire book...I will have to admit the last two felt like work. The first three were some of the best books I have ever read. I swear to god if Martin dies before finishing I will kill him!
