Catacombs in Paris, France 2 Years, 11 Months ago
Hello all,

This post really has nothing to do with the awesomeness of DF, so you can turn back now if you're not interested.

I'd was wondering if someone could shed some light on vacationing in Paris?
My wife and I are thinking of going and we haven't traveled abroad much.

I'd like to know if it's easy/possible to just walk up to a tourist attraction (mostly the Catacombs for me, but also the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, etc) in the morning and expect to get in? If advance tickets are needed, can the hotel you stay at book all that for you?
We won't be traveling during peak season, but better to know ahead of time!

Also, we'd like to see Versailles - can the hotel book the travel and tour?

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks (or Merci!)

Awesome choice for your trip, and those are all destinations worth seeing.

My question is how much time do you have?

The Louvre itself is huge, if you spend just one minute looking at each work of art it will take you three days to see everything they have, so don't plan on seeing it all at once, focus on the main pieces like the Thinker, the Mona Lisa, the Egyptian exhibit etc...

The Catacombs are awesome and easily accessible by Metro. Very creepy to see all the bones piled up thinking that they belong to some unknown people. Make sure you bring a camera with a good flash because it is very dark down there.

The Eiffel Tower is always accessible and you can save some money by not going all the way to the top since the view is not that different but the experience is still the same. I think they will let you take the stairs if you want to save money as well. (If you want to look at what the elevators look like see Superman II for a reference)

I would suggest including Notre Dame Cathedral on your list of things to see, again easily accessible by Metro, as well as the Arc de Triomphe to see the largest traffic circle in the world where 11 streets converge, including the Champs Elysees.

Versailles is definitely worth a look also but it is quite a distance from the other places mentioned and should be considered a day trip on its own.

You can't go wrong with any of these places just please, please PLEASE! stay away from Disneyland!

I would second the comments about adding Notre Dame to your list. Also, check out the basement of the Louvre - you'll see the original castle walls. Also, the medieval art exhibit is very cool. I also really liked the Egyptian/Sumerian/Babylonian sections.

When I went about 10 years ago, I asked at the tourist info center about the catacombs. The lady looked at me like I was a little crazy and said it wasn't safe there. Maybe there are more formal tours of them now...

A few years ago there was a cable TV series that ran 2 or 3 seasons called Cities Of The Underground. These catacombs (along with lots of other awesomeness) were featured on the series.

I went to paris this summer, and it was a really fun experience, I didn't enjoy Versailles so much (was very very crowded) but the underground entrance to the Louvre is a must! My cousin lives in Paris and she actually reccomended The Montparnasse tower for a view of Paris, and it was amazing (especially because if you climb the eiffel tower, you can;t see it :)
