Recently heard that Monte has been hired by WotC.

I feel a disturbance in the D&D 5th Edition Force!!!!!

Thought some board emmbers may be interested.

This makes me laugh! WoTC thought they knew what people wanted and created the debacle which is 4e. Now many have moved on to Pathfinder and will likely not look back. While I love Monte's Ptolus setting, I think they will have to do something *otherworldly* (pun intended :) to bring people back. Best possible outcome: Hasbro ends up selling the D&D brand to a company that actually cares about the players.

Harneloot,
You thoughts mirror my own. Hasbro has NOT cared about the players due to them putting profits over the requests of what players requested. An example of this was no3.5 books on PDF and less books to buy. Pathfinder listened to these requests.

I don't see how WOTC can bring players back when you have such a great game system as Pathfinder. I could see them brining players back if all you had was 4.0 and the players didn't have another option.

Monte has been wih WOTC for close to a month. He is not working as an employee at the head office per se, he still works out of his house. So that points to more of a creative consultan type of role vs major overhaul. Let us not forget, WOTC owns all the intellectual property rights of TSR, such as the campaign settings. Monte was key designer of Planescape.....maybe we wll see a relaunch of that or one of the others. I have heard talk of Dark Sun coming back.
Also, Hasbro is still making money from DnD so I doubt that they would sell it. Still, I dropped WOTC when they yanked my beloved Dragon magazine. I get Kobold Quarterly in pdf form (after subscribing to the first four years in print and pdf). So I am not opposed to pdf mags per se, but WOTC really messed up with how they handled that transition. Fourth edition is not my cup of tea but lots of people play it. I am just hoping for something cool to come out of this news, something that will be usable to not just 4th ed players.

That sounds great to me. I am currently playing in a Ptolus campaign and own the setting myself (without looking at it) and so far it's really nice. With Monty Cook on board again, I really hope for a major revamp of D&D and no 'online-dice-game-icon-clicking-madness' (of doom). I certainly will give them the benefit of a doubt and check any new rules they might release.
Concerning the PDF books, I HATE them. I am an old, archaic (e.g. conservative) dwarf (e.g. player) and like me books in me hands. Thanks, no PDF.

I personaly think that 5th edditon has been in the works for some time now. Earlier this year was when I saw the first hints of it. They posted 3 articals in various forms form blogs their website making statements about how the core of D&D has always been its "Atributes" and that in the end you dont need feats or powers to define the hero you play in D&D. and shortly after that they droped from production three upcoming books in the 4E line. Promptly following that they Killed the Mini line. Then even though Dritz was the only box game they had slated to put out they added two more to this years line after killing the minis line.
I fall back to two hard points that show the signs of 5th eddition. One most Gamers were in a full on Barbarian Rage that Wizards put out 3.5 books right up untill the very month they launched 4E. Hence the 4E slowdown of production. They have put maybe what 4 suplements and a box set out this year? This coming from a company stands by a buisness model of cranking out at minimum of one book every other monthish.
Lastly it comes form a Read many years back from the edditor of either the Dragon or Dungon mag I cant recall wich. But in his farewell edditoral he went on to describe the nature of the beast that is RPG games and D&D. Speaking how on the day he was first hired shortly after 3.5 core book had gotten into full swing he was shocked his first few days of work as they were informed 4th Eddion was already in the brianstorming baby steps. yet still as 20 some odd books were being produced for 3.5. 4E was being hammered out. And when you look at books like the book of nine swords and classes like the warlock you can see the baby steps of 4E even in 3.5. Anyway yes I can easly see 5E in the works. Very soon.

Just heard a podcast with Mike Mearls saying that WOTC is looking at releasing in electronic format the older books from TSR and WOTC. He said that they are trying to get back to the roots of DnD and as long as people are playing it, as opposed to another game, then the edition they play doesn't matter.

I have all the 1st edition rulebooks on my shelf and in pdf. What could be interesting are some of the campaign settings and other fluff pieces. Although they had a lot of the old Realms sets free online for years, so I have those too. Well, guess we just wait and see. What I would be very interested in are some of the old modules (I love the maps!).

people are tired of spending money on rules...starting over every 3 years...is crazy...
I'm more happy to spend money on supplements about geography, history,Npc collection, new campaing settings...
almost 20 years have passed, and I continue to use my Volo's guide when I play Forgotten Realms...
those were money well spent! not a fucking manual of additional rules that is useless in few years...

Amen, brother. I am feeling the same way now about Pathfinder.....great products but I just don't need 90% of the stuff beyond the core books. I find myself reaching more often for my 1st edition DnD, Grimtooth's, and perusing my old Dragon issues for inspiration. Still, if WOTC let loose some pdf product of ols stuff (mostly 2nd edition as I hav little of that), there is a good chance they could part me from some $. And I totally agree about the Volo guides, I love those!
