Tragedy strikes... 3 Years, 3 Months ago
So my laptop died -- so thoroughly and catastrophically that I had to reset everything to its original settings, which means....

I've lost every single picture of my DF layouts that I've ever taken.

People who know me around here know that I post TONS of pics here. Well, I post a FRACTION of what I've taken. For every 15 or so pictures that I post here, I probably took about 100 or so. Most are minor variations in angle and lighting, some are slightly more radical. Some I haven't posted because they aren't meant to be high quality photos, they are just references establishing how layouts were put together. But the point is, I have lost THOUSANDS of photos. Elaborate layouts with 3 cavern sets, 3 chasm sets, 3 lake sets, 4 river sets.... Massive ROTA setups with 4 sets, including custom painted pieces.... Sci-Fi and Hellscape sets put together... taverns... ruins.... the mind reels.

OUCH.

sigh.

Addicted to DF - Proud owner of 147 DF sets and counting = 126 new non-bowtie sets, and 21 older bowtie sets! By some miracle, I have managed to avoid wife aggro so far...

Cheer up, Law!
It might seem like a big loss and it surely is. All the pics you posted here never failed to inspire me and to try it out myself.
But, and this is a big but, try to look at it in a different way. This gives you the opportunity to go at it anew. Trying to reconstruct some of your amazing setups, might just be something you will enjoy. While doing so, you can also come up with new variations and again inspire us.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe you to be a person who enjoys trying out setups. The kind of person that enjoys the way there rather than the finished setup.
I, for my part, am looking forward to seeing new, amazing, and inspiring setups from you.

Salute,
Dwarf

Thanks, guys. And you're right, Dwarf -- to be fair, I've spent much more time setting up new layouts and taking pictures than I ever have reviewing pictures I've already taken. The fun is definitely in putting the stuff in front of you and snapping away for others' enjoyment, not in strolling down memory lane.

Still stings, but the sting will fade.

Law, I commiserate with you for your loss. But take heart, for I'm certain that you'll now find inspiration to produce new photos to captivate us all.

Ouch...

I know some of the pain, My hard drive on my desk top crashed a few months ago, luckly I had multiple drives and only lost one hard drive (the boot one) which did not contain that many pictures. I lost some, but most were backed up...

Law, if you need them, I've downloaded most of your pics posted here. If you can't find them I can zip all of them up and post them to a share site.

you have restored the default settings (installation) of you laptop of a new hard disk or on the same hard disk?

Re:Tragedy strikes... 3 Years, 3 Months ago
Thanks for the thoughts, guys!

What happened was this -- I tried installing some new updates, but because my hard drive was nearly full, they didn't fit. And I've since found out on some forums that this is a problem with a particular set of Vista updates. They run out of room and essentially disable your computer's ability to start up, which is what happened. It just kept getting locked in a loop every time I tried starting up. The only way to break out of it was to just re-set everything to its original setting. I tried backing stuff up before I did that, but it didn't work. Plus, I had WAY too much to backup without an external hard drive.

I've learned my lesson though. Now I've got a system in place to do periodic backups that store all my files off my computer, completely recoverable if something happens to my laptop, hardware or software.

I'm just glad I've been such a prolific poster here - I may have only posted a fraction of what I took, but for obvious reasons I tried to make sure I posted the best pictures, so at least I know that the pictures I was most proud of are still out there.
