Day trips from Sydney? Ineresting things to see in the city? 5 Years, 6 Months ago
Hey folks,

My wife and I are heading to Sydney in April for a wedding. We'll be there for 10 days with the first 5 days centered around the wedding. The second 5 days we will be on our own and we are looking for cool off-beat things to see or do. Any suggestions from the Aussies and/or previous traveler's to Sydney?

Thanks,

- Doug

Anything but the Wiggles!!!

It's not offbeat, but the aquarium is amazing. I don't know if they still have it but there was a great open-air market at Nurse's Walk (I think that was the name.) I remember eating breakfast at this open-air cafe on Circular Quay, but I forget the name. It's a great city. Have fun!

Of course you MUST take pics of the Opera House, and if you're into opera, attend a performance.

We saw a symphony there. The acoustics were amazing.

Just avoid the restaurant in the opera house itself. It was disappointing (then again, it was five years ago, so it might have improved.)

Swimming with hungry sharks is a popular Sydney past-time at the moment!

If you are up for an adventure, hail a cab and ask the driver to "take us to the best ________ in the city". Or to recommend something that the tourist board and the pamphlets and the brochures never mention. A good cabbie knows the area like the back of his hand (or he has an arrangement with various restaurants, nightclubs, and recreational/rental places).

You will either be taken someplace really good, or you'll have one of those "oh my god you wouldn't believe it" stories to tell when you get home (which can also be fun).

The Aquarium was in Darling Harbor wasn't it. I remember a nice market area by Darling Harbor, but it was 9 years ago when I went. But take a guided tour boat trip on the harbor. Try the seafood as well. The Blue Mountains are fairly close to Sidney if I remember rightly and you could probably see them as a day trip.

As for BAD advice, say how much you like everything in New Zealand... You can go speak to the nice people in King's Cross, or not (area has quite the reputation). So wearing an All-Blacks sweatshirt to King's Cross might not be the best idea. Other bad advice, ask to pet the Koala that is not high on eukalyptus.

Hi Doug,

Not sure what you like doing or whether you are interested in getting out of Sydney either but here are some ideas:

1/ Gaming Store: Visit the Tin Soldier, basement 40 York Street Sydney. In the CBD between King and Market Streets (not far from Hilton hotel). One of the best gaming stores worldwide IMHO but no longer stock DF of course. They carry a great range of pre-painted 54mm miniatures including many out of St Petersburg.

2/ Fine Dining: With the Aussie peso collapsing and the greenback getting stronger depite the US treasury printing dollars like crazy its a great time to indulge in some fine dining. A bit of research will yield you a number of 1, 2 or 3 hat restuarants that will guarantee a gastronomical experience. Expect to pay A$150/head plus booze with some pretty ritzy wine cellars.

3/ Bridge Climb: Forget Centerpoint tower, do the Bridge Climb. Even nimble grannies can do it and the view is superlative.

4/ Manly Ferry: Catch a public ferry from Circular Quay to Manly and get a cheapskate harbour cruise to boot. Take your togs and have a body bash or walk up to Shelly beach for some excellent snorkelling. Lots of nice beaches in Sydney in particular the Northern Beaches (go right up to Palm Beach to hang out with celebrities) or hit the Eastern Suburns beaches for some beautiful small beaches and cliff walks (walk from Bronte to Bondi). Netted beaches in the harbour are good for young families too such as Balmoral. (The nets are guaranteed to only have holes big enough for man eating bull sharks to slip through!)

5/ Torongo Zoo: OK another Zoo but this one with great views over the Harbour to the CBD. Get the cablecar to the top and have an easy walk down the hill. Don't miss the bird show.

6/ Bushwalking: Sydney is surrounded by national parks so some great coastal walks can be done (including swimming with sharks! - have I mentioned the spate of shark attacks yet?). Alternatively you can be in the Blue Mountains in under 2 housr which offer spectacular sandstone bluffs and deep valley walks. (The ascents are killers). Book an overnight stay in a guesthouse in Luera, Katoomba (where the famous 3 Sisters rock formation is) or Blackheath. I understand there is an excellent restuarant in Blackheath which is better known for milk bars and some very nice gardens.

7/ Driving Tours: For a day of driving take the old Princess Highway south through the Royal National Park and work your way down to the little town of Berry, just north of Nowra. Stop at vantage points along the way and enjoy the coast, bush and escarpment. Stop at Kiama as well for nick nacks or make this the final destination for a shorter drive.

8/ Hunter Valley: Good if you like wine, golf, bushwalking or coal mines. Lots of open cellars and excellent wines including fantastiv earthy shiraz if thats your cup of tea. Drive 2 hrs north of Sydney.

Have fun.

Cheers

Thanks for all the info, especially your detailed list Bossman. I think during our free week we want to take day trips or overnighters out of the city. The first week we are staying in a B&B in The Rocks and the second one we are staying in the guest house of our soon to be sister-in-law's parents out in the suburbs.

Hi Doug,

If you are staying in the Rocks then you are suberbly located for exploring the Harbour. I would recommend the Bridge walk in the morning before it heats up too much. Try Quay resturant at the overseas passanger (ocean liner) terminal - they have good lunch specials. Alternativelu Aria on the other side of Circular Quay near the Opera House or halfway between at Cutoms House for a great vantage point and more relaxed atmosphere. It nice just to walk from the Rocks to the Opera House then through the Botonical Gardens to Mrs Macquaries Chair. (Or jog through there if you are a jogger)

Cheers

Doug,

I have been there 2x now and to be honest the only thing I talk about on a regular basis and to be honest the most memorable experience was the bridge climb. It was just awesome. I recommend doing it early in the day. It can get hot. I have done it once early and once mid afternoon. I lost 5 lbs in the first 10 minutes when we did it in the afternoon. There is a road near the rocks called rigby or rigbie or something or other but has a pub called Beale's located on it. (Or at least it did) This pub always has fresh seafood, good beer, and reasonably priced.
