What fantasy or period movies do you recommend for inspiration for GMs and/or players? (Other than Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings, the recent Narnia movies, and the Harry Potter series?) Especially genre movies that might not be in the mainstream, or older movies that might not immediately come to mind?

Also, what fantasy/historical movies have sets that made you think, "That would look great as a DF set-up!"?

JackAttack,

The new series on history or travel not sure which where the guy exlores the underground cities has been a great inspiration for describing entries into ruis for me. Of course there are the classic indiana jones and national treasure movies but my all time favorite is a documentary that National geographic did on the pyramids and how the viewing ports line up with a particular Star including the wobble of the earth and the person ties it in with the inca's and how their calendar lines up so that they have a particular star is always in view for sacrifices, etc. In both cases they display 3d maps of the temples/pyramids. Overall nice stuff.

There's almost too many to mention...

Gladiator
the Rome HBO miniseries
Time Bandits
Army of Darkness
Conan the Barbarian -- the first, but technically, any of them
all Raiders movies
all Pirates of the Caribbean movies
Stargate

There are more, but my mind is strangely blank at the moment...

I think you've got to throw Dragonslayer into the mix. Great fantasy movie, and that dragon is one of the best ever put to screen.

I'm going to throw one in, only because I started playing D&D around the same time I originally saw this... It's not really a good movie, but it has a soft spot in my heart because of it. "Hawk the Slayer".

Oh, man !!! That's one of my favorites for the same reason !!! Gotta love "Sped, the River Slaver" !!!!

I think I'll watch it tonight !! Yep, got a DVD copy of it ... nope, didn't pay good money for it ... it was a "joke" gift from my brother whom I subjected the endless HBO viewings of the that movie all those years ago.

... And back on topic :

Record of Lodoss War (Anime)
Clash of the Titans
Blood Rayne
Dungeons and Dragons movies
Red Sonja
Xena
Hercules

Sure, some cheesy stuff, but fun if you don't expect much. Previous posters already listed some of my favorites.

For urban games with a criminal element, some movies to recommend:

Harry in Your Pocket with James Coburn - the best treatise on pickpockets ever
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels
Snatch
Way of the Gun
The Usual Suspects
The Warriors

Cool fantasy flicks:
Ladyhawke
Flesh + Blood
The Blood of Heroes -post-apocalyptic coolness

Big Trouble in Little China (a classic)

And there are a whole host of Chinese (and some Japanese) fantasy Martial Arts movies I could recommend - among them -

Shinobi
The Battle Wizard
Onmyoji (I & II)
Zu - Warriors from the Majic Mountain
A Chinese Odyssey (I & II)

also -

Ninja Scroll

And even Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and some of the other recent movies of similar ilk

And I'll certainly second the harryhusen films - big time - as well as Army of Darkness (a classic)

I think a campaign I did in 7th grade had a repeating crossbow because of this.
