I was driving along and saw something genuinely fantastic.

Apparently, someone left the fountain in the middle of a man-made pond running through the recent cold weather. The spray from the fountain froze in the air and settled, over time creating a ring of ice that has grown to something like twenty feet tall!

And the fountain is still going, spraying about three feet above the rim of this hollow mountain and looking for all the world like a volcano of ice.

It's quite a sight, and it belongs in somebody's fantasy setting somewhere, so I thought I'd share.

Okay, went to Best Buy, waited an hour for them to open (at Borders Books, found a nice mythological creature reference with an appendix that lists creatures by region, very helpful), talked to the sales guy for twenty minutes about the difference between the D-60 and the D-80, and every store in the area is out of stock.

So I bought a disposable camera at the grocery store. Photos will be back tomorrow, I'll try to post them on Tuesday.

Unfortunately, they changed the settings on the fountain (no burbly, foamy, roiling water today), so it is more of an ice geyser than an ice volcano, but it's still pretty. It's also more like twelve feet tall. Oh well, it's still pretty.

Giants, Monsters, & Dragons: An Encyclopedia of Folklore, Legend, and Myth by Carol Rose

It's a compendium of monsters, with pretty good cross-referencing. The appendix I referred to includes modern and ancient regions, as well as monster types (lake/river-dwellers, (part) equine, etc.). This is really going to help me sort encounters by region (no catoblepas in pseudo-Norse settings, for example).
