Big names gone from WOTC/Hasbro? 5 Years, 7 Months ago
Does anyone know what happened over at WOTC/Hasbro. I heard big names left / got laid off recently. Was thsi over lackluster support for add ons to 4th ed because I got to think 4th ed did ok for them. Most FLGS and Book stores sold out around me when it first got release. I have got to admit now with some time under my belt I liked a lot of the concepts of 4th but I did not like dragonborn and tieflings as "normal" races but was ok with it. I did not like some of the powers but let that go. However I have been majorly disappointed in add ons. Namely the Draconomicon. ho heard of a purple psicotic dragon. Puff the magic dragon lived by the sea...

Anyway if anyone has an update on reasons/truth/myth please update this post.

I am not sure if its an economy thing, since only Hasbro is posting a 10% gain. where most other toy companies this year are posting a 40% on average loss. But here is what the Game Designer Dave Noonan wrote this on the ENworld forums about the layoffs, him being one of them.

Thanks for the kind words, folks. They mean a great deal. And my wife was reading over my shoulder, and they cheered her up _immensely_.

I can confirm the essential truth of what's been reported, and I am indeed one of the ones let go today. When you're in the midst of the process, you don't really get a sense of what's going on elsewhere in the building. Thus I didn't know some of the names until I read them here. They're quality people. In a weird way, I'm proud to be among them. (I'd rather be employed, sure, but you take the solace you can at a moment like this.)

I'll leave the prognosticating and "...but what does this MEAN?!?" stuff to others. I think the game is in good shape--and I think it's in good hands. In my 10 years at Wizards, I survived a lot of these layoffs--including cuts deeper than this. More to the point for you guys, the _game_ survived deeper cuts than this.

Maybe I didn't say this enough when I was part of "the Man," but the ENWorld community is absolutely terrific. The level of discourse here continues to be top-notch, and there's always an interesting thread sitting right there, begging to be read. But if you're already a regular here, you've already figured that out, huh?

on the Same ENforum there are multiple comments that, WoTc tend to do layoffs, espically after a big roll out. Like after 3, 3.5, and now 4th. As you need more people to do the whole rules, but less for all the expansions...

so it might not be a complete "economy" reason.

Well, a friend of mine that works at a local toy store and does all the hobby ordering said a distributor...I think he said it was Alliance, was offering their 4th edition D&D at a 60% discount to retailers. I asked him if that was common and he said no.

This could have more to do with competing with Amazon than anything else.

Did you notice all of the "digital" job titles? Perhaps it was their failure to deliver the web based portions of 4th in a timely manner.

I think they could salvage things if they brought the 3.5 characther classes, spells and magic items over into 4th.

Yeah Philip, I believe these layoffs do follow a pattern and has a lot to do with the failure of the DDI not being fully operational by the time 4e launched in June. Here it is December and the digital compendium was the only thing working, unless you consider the Character Generator (beta version) which is now available. It was either WotC cut some dead weight, or they send Darth Vader to get them back on schedule. I think WotC already tried the latter.

As far as salvage, not sure what you mean? 4e has reported superseding their target number for book sales for 4e. WotC already converted the Forgotten realms (all their classes, lore, and magic) to 4e. Eberron is next to get campaign and player guides, in June and July '09. Players Handbook II coming March '09 will have the Bard, Barbarian, Druid, Shaman, Warden, Sorcerer, Avenger, and Invoker.

There's discussion of Spell Jammer, and Planescape going to be into 4e sometime in the future. ;)

I only hope that this doesn't affect the Star Wars miniatures/RPG stuff. If I am not mistaken, I think that SWM and DDM are two different beasts. I hope so. I was really turned off by the D&D 4.0 stuff, begining with the goofy fish-like beholder. Sorry, just my thoughts. I don't mean to offend anyone, but I think that the SWM group is very well managed. Please take my opinion lightly, because I am a Games Workshop cultist. Pay $50 for a rhino transport, ...uhh sure ok. Hehe. So, don't listen to me. :)

Dead it's shouldn't.
DDM and SWM are almost the excat opposite (went over to the WotC boards to get the post but they are down right now), but i just remembered it posted it in this thread Big change for WoTC plastic minis #22.
I know of a few books, and i think 3 minis sets coming out next year and even some tied together better, closer to what they did with KOTOR, than with TFU, or Clone Wars for SW. So so far they haven't screwed it over. Also remember that SW doesn't Need dragons to fight, the bulk will be Bounty Hunters, Stormtroopers, or Battle Droids, with the occasional Dark Jedi thrown in so many of the no name minis can work for GM with a bit of creativty.... and Well we get those minis all the time sometimes adnauasia for the Dark Jedi ( i mean i have 5 of one sculpt of vader alone, let alone the like 8 versions of him there are so far, then throw in the Secret Appentice, and custom options and you can have as many Cool bad guys as you want. )
I am happy with new sculpts of Stormtroopers, so i can fill an entire set up of them, heck if i could get 20 different sculpts for stormtroopers i'd be happy so i can do them all a bit different... I just wish we could get a few things besides Wookiees and Rodians, there are so many untapped Species, and species that the RPG has stats for but aren't minis made for yet that you almost fill out a set there. Throw in the "named" EU characters people want and it's just silly the number they "could" do. And while "named" figs suck in one sense they are awesome in another Most of the RPG players arean't going to recognize Kyp, Kyle, or Jacen but he should have a cool looking/good mini, and it's an isntant Figure that works for a PC or NPC and you likely can't flood the game with him.

Part of that Managed better for SW i think really has to do with Contract obligations to Uncle George, one of the reasons people have always said there are vast differences between what happens with D&D and SW (like information, e-books, programs, etc) is D&D belongs to WotC, the IP for SW doesn't and they really have to get premision to to a lot of stuff.

And 4th Killed D&D for me also, haven't played it since the few tests we did of the system, it's too generic in class (every body gets the Exact same thing, 2-3 Instants, 1 encounter 1 daily) it's been power leveld, but leveled to the point of everyone is the same. The Look of some of the art, and the horrible Cartoon minis, what they did to the realms, the incusion of certain species... Now there are a Few things i like but the bulk of the game is just *bleh*. We have switched to different games and no one is really interested in jumping back to 3.X anytime soon....

No i agree i think SW is better managed, as better written, i had hopes 4th would be better as i Like Saga, it's different enoguh from the RCR with just enough touches of "4th" to make it good but not the complete homogeneity of 4th to kill it.

Yea, thanks for directing me to that post. I remeber reading it after I saw it again.

Deffinately! In another thread you said something like: "I can never seem to have enough stormtroopers...". I totally agree!! I want to buy another Rebel Storm case, just to get more trilogy stormies. Hehe.

Most of the RPG players arean't going to recognize Kyp, Kyle, or Jacen but he should have a cool looking/good mini, and it's an isntant Figure that works for a PC or NPC and you likely can't flood the game with him.
Very much so. I thought that KoTR had alot of those multi-use-RPG characters. Of course I had to pay $30 for Carth Onasi, but I didn't mind. I use him for cyberpunk 2020 all the time.

That makes alot of sense. Now I understand.

Dead if you can wait untill Feb there is another OT based set comming out, Imperial Entanglements, from the info given out it will focus more on Episodes V and VI, so Empire and Jedi. While there are LOTS of cool aliens from Jedi, Empire is kind of Sparse, and done a bit there was talk of EU so maybe some Shadows of the empire figs, but even then not sure what for Empireish stuff....
I mean we have loads of Hoth troopers on both sides after the TFU, and since it's not a huge set no Walkers or Speeders... So not really sure what from Empire is really left. I mean Troopers are about it left. we know there will be another scout trooper (from box) and Luke in Poncho from Jedi to round out the Rebel Hero Endor Team. and hopefully some Ewoks...

but if you can wait till Feb you should get atleast another Stormiee.
