I actually DM more than i play, but i own very few of the Fantasy Dungeon set's and with 6 players at the table don't have the time to take pictures of our D&D set ups. I have much more time (and access seeing as we don't game where i live) to the Sci-Fi sets i have at home. And besides there is tons of love for Fantasy around, Sci-Fi needs some one to represent and with I.O. AWOL, and the Encephalitic Lyssavirus afflicted Vulpes banned, i have taken up the tourch...

I'm a 3rd year doctoral candidate also- just officially started my dissertation.

As for the "real" vs "fake" doctor my daughter is a PhD married to an MD (she's doing her post-doc at John Hopkins where he is undergoing anastheseology training) and they have this fight all the time :D. Her view is 4+ years of continuous research trumps poking around in a cadaver.

But welcome to DF- this stuff can be used for just about anything. I am a D&Der and use it a lot for that, but I am also an avid sci-fi mini's gamer using the STargrunt rules. Just recently my group has taken a break from D&D to do a few sessions of Paranoia so the sci-fi stuff is gret for Alpha COmplex, the DF tavern set I used for a traitorous commie/mutant scum hide-out for the Sierra Club, and the cavern set I used as a radioactive rod and food vat storage site (wit appropriate Rodents of Unsual Size and crazed janitorial robots).

Nick;

My sig line says it all for me. I'm a fellow DM-type. But I combine genres at will - you can be wandering down a cavernous passage, having just fallen through a trap-door in an MBS tavern into a dungeon, and suddenly find yourself in a buried starship! That's basically the premise I just used back in July for a big game at Shore Leave 29, here in Baltimore!
I've been collecting DF since @1999 or 2000, and have over 40 boxes plus assorted singles. It all lives in my basement when I don't have a game going, but with plastic models, HO- AND N-scale model railroading, and assorted other hobbies, indoor and outdoor, sometimes stuff falls by the wayside.
Anyway, welcome to the nuthouse, where everyone is a little bit crazy, but we usually get along okay.

"you can be wandering down a cavernous passage, having just fallen through a trap-door in an MBS tavern into a dungeon, and suddenly find yourself in a buried starship!"

Frightening! I can imagine how someone of the medeival era would react to finding a starship. Must have been a very entertaining game.

Hi Nick -

Welcome to the party !! Help yourself to Sci Fi on the left there, Dungeons and Caverns in the center, Medieval Building Sets to the right and, back by the vegetable platter, is the Den of Evil (careful, it's spicey !!!) ;)

We're insane but we're the happy kind so nothing to worry about here. I even have the papers to prove I'm not a danger to myself or others

Anyway, my name is Mike and I'm a Fantasy DF collector but my CT neighbor, Genghis Ska, keeps inspiring me with his Sci Fi set ups !! I'm not a doctor but I play one on TV ... er, no, that's not it ... I'm an architect who likes to play doctor ;) Yeah, that's it !!

"you can be wandering down a cavernous passage, having just fallen through a trap-door in an MBS tavern into a dungeon, and suddenly find yourself in a buried starship!" ..... This sounds sorta like an old AD&D module "Expedition to the Barrier Peaks" or something like that. The adventurers come across an old, buried spaceship in the Barrier Peak Mountains. Lots of opportunities for mayhem and confusion in that one !!

Again, welcome !! Oh, and a couple words of advice :
1) Keep the boxes and styrofoam to store your DF in
2) Get some sturdy shelves to hold all of it you're going to get
3) Remember my birthday (Feb 1st) ... and refer to my DF Wish List ;)

Oh, killer table in the other thread, BTW !!! Nice work !!
See you around -
- Mike

Mike -

I've never seen that AD&D module! Now, I have GOT to FIND IT!!
I can't help but wonder if I ran into it somewhere and unconciously stole it! If so, I don't remember when or where, and have no idea why I don't remember it.
Hmmm...

And considering I NEVER played D&D until 3E, this gets even MORE baffling.
I'll ask Sandy and the boys; the boys may have the module, and Sandy may have mentioned it to me, long ago in a Galaxy, Far, Far away.

There were several old AD&D mods that involved sci-fi surprises. That "Barrier Peaks" one, IIRC, is somewhat notorious in the memories of old-school 1e fans like myself. The name may be wrong, but I don't think it is - either way, there was definitely a mod like that.

And of course there was the drow-oriented one ("Queen of the Demonweb Pits," maybe? something connected to "Vault of the Drow") where the climax was on a giant spider-shaped spaceship. Maybe it was a "planar craft" or something, but it definitely had a touch of sci-fi to it.

Ah, memories.

Jim

Expedition is great! I remember DMing my players through it and the fun that ensued when they found a laser pistol- then had to figure out how to make it work. It was a 5 story crashed spacehip embedded in a mountain. I actually still have that module but its burried in a big tub up in the attic atm.

Expedition is very old- I played it right around high school so we are talking 26+ years or so when it came out.

I picked it up off of E-Bay about 2 years ago cause i remembered running through it as a player in Jr. High (in like 84-85), for more recent rules some place there was an update to 3.X a few years back, it's a great mod. One of my favs, i was going to run it, but one of my players has played as long as i have and remembers it, so ahve to wait for to run it.

You can get the PDF for about $5.

THANKS, GS!!!
A buddy of mine (GW Joe, the NUT who got me started in all this insanity!) has a BOAT-load of PDFs for me, so if that isn't in there, at least NOW I have an alternate source.
I have no idea if I'll ever run it, but it would be nice to have for comparison's sake.
Of course, with the inspiration someone gave me up in the What We Want Next thread, I may not need Sci-Fi material - they're dragging me into Dwarven Mines, Inc. - complete with mine cars and rails, using N-scale flex-track and trucks, solidly mounted to an S-scale ore bucket! With little dwarven miners. And great BIG headaches for me, Jeff, and Stefan, until they get the manufacturing worked out, and I figure out the scenarios!

Oy.

See ya!
