lupus,

Here is a little trick for the diaper thing that I almost forgot. I did not have a problem with changing the diapers but according to my grandmother my father did. She gave this advice. Keep oranges in the house. Right before you go to do the deed rub the skin of the orange and take a good whiff. The oil in the orange will release a strong pleasant smell that will over power anything else. My dad swears by it and says it worked. This is not the first old wives hints that you will hear but trust me no matter how crazy they are they seem to always work. I think we have lost a lot as a culture with modern conveniences. Have fun.

:D Thanks for that one :) Had actually taken a box of latex gloves and facemasks from work. Hope to minimze contact that way :) But the orange idea is not a bad one......orange oil is pretty strong and should overcome the smell.....I hope :)

As to handing down the toys....just coz she's a girl don't mean she won't be gaming :) I intend to take a leaf out of most of the parents on the board here and share the hobby with her :) After all, as Jim said, what's the point of having all these cool toys if you don't have anyone to play with :) And the stash of cool toys is ever growing :)

Congratulations !!! About sleepless nights - this really depends from baby to baby. This can differ a lot. Just look at it from the bright side - before I had our kids I was unable to ever sleep on an overnight flight. Since I had the 'sleepless nights' I got used to interuptions in the middle of night and go back to sleep - and I'm now a lot less fussy about it. So now when I fly I actually can sleep.

I also just had a quick look - it's still here on my desk - albeit a little bit dusty. A coffee mug I got - Echte Papas brauchen keinen Schlaf (translation - Real Daddys don't need any sleep). It shows a cartoon like daddy with a crying baby on his arms, unshaven, rings under the eyes - but a (forced ?) smile on hid face. Don't worry - you will survive.

About sharing ... The latest 'toys' my kids got interested are my metal figures and the paint. They just did paint 4 figures last week. I handed out 3 robots to my son (I don't play any SF therefore they had been on the junk pile anyhow). Then my daughter wanted a figure as well. It pains when you then go through your stach of figures and sacrifice one of them.

But in perspective - they had loads of fun and they had just been lying around. Still - it was part of my collection ... Therefore I will be looking on E-Bay for some old figures next. Don't really care what they are - just cheap and unpainted. And yes - the sword of the last one has broken off by now. Seems daddy has to take out hid green stuff.

Thod :)

Looks like I'll have to get good at modelling to do the repairs of any breaks to come :) No better reason to get myself into the 'arts & crafts' side of the hobby, with more painting and modelling

Thanks for the words of wisdom. I already know our little one is going to be a nightmare. Just got back from the hospital with my wife. It seems our little 'darling' is an angel during the day. Sleeps the three / four hour stretches between feeds. Couldn't ask for better and everyone agrees she's divine.

Come afternoon/ night.....she's the baby from hell! Won't feed well. Doesn't settle. It looks like I'm going to have to live up to that mug of yours :D

Oh, and BTW, unfortunately, I don't seem to have the problem of not sleeping on long flights. My wife keeps assuring me that I'm dead to the world during our flights to the US, even though I try to protest that I don't! :) So, I don't really need that skll set

Don't worry, Lupus, youget numb to bodily excretions eventually.

As for sleep...don't count on any for about 6-7 months. Think of it as a unique experiment in sleep deprivation. And remember, if you think you are sleep deprived, think of your wife getting up every 2-3 hours for the first 3 months. I would not bring this up as a topic for discussion with her, especially if you are seeking pity ;)

Baby update:

No longer the baby from hell........unless she doesn't get enough to eat :)

THe little one has managed to fall into a routine schedule of feeding every 4 hours. Which for us, means a feed at 10pm, one at 2am and the next when we are up anyway :)

With regards to sleep deprivation, funny thing about baby cries.....it has this ability to pierce through anything. Everytime she's up and starts to cry, I get woken up as well :) Fortunately, since I"m at work, my kind wife has allowed me the luxury of staying in bed while she does the feed :) So, it ain't that bad.

With regards to bodily excretions, at this age, it kinda looks like french mustard.........and for some reason, I'm kinda put off french mustard now :P

At the risk of getting temporarily (or perhaps permanently!) banned, I gotta ask:

WHY do you think they called it Grey Poupon?

Sounds like Fatherhood is fitting you like a glove. The 4 hour thing is a wonderful thing isn't it?

Wait for it... cholic is on its merry way!

Some friends and I once created the Four Baby Horsemen of the Apocalypse. They rode little hobby horses, and their names were Tantrum, Feeding, Naptime, and Cholic.

Fear the Baby Horsemen. Fear them!

No, really, you're going to miss this in about five or six years, when your kid is heading off to first grade.

Jackattack,
I told my wife about your Four Baby horsemen of Apocalypse and she loved it. Now we just name her the particular horseman when the mood strikes :)

Although we have found, keep her fed, and she turns into the Angel of Peace :)

Just another reason why I love OPK*. Hug them, spoil them, play with them; get them totally wound up, then give them back, ready to drive Mom/Dad NUTS!

Why do you THINK people call me the "MAD" Yank?

Jim,
Funny you should mention that :) I used to be one of those guys.......revving my niece up until she's totally out of control and then leaving my sis with her. Man, she used to be majorly ticked off by that.......

Kinda know what she went through now that the shoe is on the other foot......... :)

But it was fun none the less :D
