I don't want to give anything away, but I turned to a friend of mine after the movie, and he's a big Kurt Russell fan, and I asked "So do you still like Kurt Russell?" And he had a big grin on his face and he said "Even more! I mean, he agreed to be in this, and it looks like he had a blast!" It is true -- you have to admire Russell for taking this part. It seems designed to make him look bad, in more ways than one. I mean it just systematically wreaks havoc on the image of the type of character he's known for. But it's great. I really liked "Death Proof."

I have to say, when i first heard about Grindhouse i was really worried about it, not that it was a scarey movie or anything like that, but that it was stupid. Then i saw an interview Tarantino did on the night show circuit and i got what they were trying to do. After that i realized that yeah it was suppossed to be that over the top. I got what they were going for, and i liked that idea, so i was all for. I passed on 300 to go see it.

While as i kid i never really went to a "Grindhouse" type movie theater (the massive exploation movies) but i was a Navy kid and i remember going to see a number of double features of B-movies on the army base. Saw many Godzilla movies and Star Wars loads and loads of times. So i could relate to what they were going for, and i had a blast. Heck may go see it again.

But i must say i was suprissed that there were so few people in the theater, i figured it was the matanee i went to, but if it tanked that would make sense.

I too liked Death Proof better, but i wonder if it is just becuase it had less of that "worn" look too it. I noticed it when they got to the Vanishing Point car place. that this one was much "cleaner". Or if it was just less over the top in parts, or just that i'm not an infection zombie movie fan, or maybe all of them.

I think the advertising may have actually hurt them.

All of it that I've seen has centered on the woman with a machine gun as a prosthetic leg. In addition to being a fairly controversial image, which will keep certain movie-goers away, I suspect that it is also the big payoff in that segment of the movie -- yet another example of the trailers showing too darn much. It would have been better to concentrate on the zombies, and some cuts from BEFORE the peg-leg rampage.

In addition, they could show a little more of the Kurt Russell segments. In the ads, you only see him a couple of times, very briefly, which initially made me think he has a minor role (as the big-name actor who lends credibility to the project).

Grindhouse isn't my cuppa. But I will go against type if the advertising is done well, and makes me think that the movie will be entertaining. Silly gimmicky violence and flashes of stars without any dialog to give them context does not move me to go to the theater.

I'm actually shocked to hear it's not doing well at the box-office!

The theater I was in was (essentially) full and the audience had a great time of it. I could tell that from both the reactions inside the theatre and from the talk outside afterwards.

We're known for being avid movie-goers in this city, but I didn't realise it until now.

Anyway, it's rough news as I would have really liked to have seen another one "canned".

My manager talked myself and another project lead to skip out of work on Friday to catch it (left work at 11 to catch the noon show). Great movie(s)! Thought Planet Terror was the better of the two, Death Proof was a little slow in getting moving (in my opinion).

And best of all, I've heard rumors that they're talking about actually making the Machete movie (direct-to-dvd only, but still...).
