Finaly saw 300...some of those battle scene's just blew me away...the Historical innacuracies didn't bother me as much as I thought they were going to...I thought it was going to be real garbage..and after seeing Alexander by Stone, I was wary...but 300 was pretty kick ass...many critics shot is down and it made me flinch from seeing it on opening night, but that was my bad...I should have went...

I'm not giving any spoilers, but i thought it was an interesting take on what the Spartans might have been like...even more important was that I couldn't help thinking that, if I was a kid seeing this movie, it would definitely make me more interested in History. I always hated History class because of all the memorization, dates, names, numbers...Man, If they had showed me a movie like this first, I probably would have done EXTRA homework! Only later in life, after playing D&D did I start to get interested in real history...anyway, I think this movie is pretty straightforward in that it's a sort of Fantasy or Poem on Film, loosely inspired by the actual events...anyway, that's my take on it. The Persians were also pretty kool and bad ass as well (not sure what the protests from Iran are about)

Just a beautiful film.

I'm sure the girls will like it too;)

Anyone else have thoughts about it?

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm curious. One of my friends, who is a classicist, really was bothered by the changes. Not so much THAT they made changes, as the SPECIFIC changes they made. But he didn't want to spoil it for me, so he wouldn't get into specifics.

He did say, however, that he would have preferred them adding lasers to some of the changes they actually made....

They haven't even released the movie trailer here in Japan. I saw about a 5 second clip of this movie. They will release the full trailer this weekend here. This week, they just released Hostel and Saw3 on DVD/rental (in Japan). Of course, I watched both, being the morbid person I am. :) Hostel completely freaked me out. Damn, that was a freaky film.

My wife and I saw The 300, and we enjoyed it. As with almost any such film, they used "artistic license" (or just plain "took liberties") with the history. That aside, it made for an entertaining film, with lots of enjoyable scenes.

I know friends of mine in the SCA that will groan over the use of shields as counterweights to a sword swing, but that's Hollywood for you. I guess I can engage in willing suspension of disbelief for the sake of movie enjoyment.

The lead actor reminds me a bit of Brian Blessed (Richard IV in Black Adder). I say, go see it and enjoy the popcorn!

Krad -

All BS aside, why WOULDN'T a shield, especially a metal one, work as a counterweight? I ask this because as a swordsman, I'm a fantastic pistoleer (Qualify Expert on .38/.357/9mm) and rifleman (expert on M-16 - but then, who DIDN'T on that one?). I really DON'T know why it wouldn't work, and I'd like to.

If you're swinging your shield around to counterbalance your swordstrokes, you aren't using it to block incoming attacks, which is what it is actually there for...

Also, using your shield to counterweight your sword strokes is indicative of one using mostly shoulder and upper-body for fighting rather than hips and full body. Meh.

I thought 300 was OK. Not the best movie I've seen in the last few months. I enjoyed Children of Men much more as well as Borat. I can only take so much pro-wrestler talk in one sitting.

Then again, I have the original 300 comics, so...

I loved the movie!

300 was absolutely a comic book on the big screen - and a fantastic one at that. I think I would have enjoyed it less if it had been more realistic. With everything so stylized, it was easy to get sucked into the spirit of it all.

And my wife (who likes action movies more than I do) said afterwards 'Now I think I have a better idea of what melee combat in D&D feels like.' Maybe not in the particulars, but at least in spirit.

It's not a dungeon. It's an Underground Fortified Defense Installation.

Finally saw 300. I liked it. Keep in mind that this was a movie and they need to sell tickets so the embellishments are theatrical. How about this for a sequel

A man running over the plains of Marathon in full armor and fighting a group of enemies here and there until he makes it back to report teh attack. Wouldn't that be great.
