Just putting in a quick hello from New Zealand. Scenery is astounding. At a campsite now on the South Island with the kids in bed. So hope all is well out there.

Hi WillOH !!!

Bon Voyage !!!! I'm just sitting here in quiet New England, living vicariously through you and others who get to enjoy a change of scenery. How about you hire a baggage porter for your next trip? I know just the guy :D

Happy trails !!

Where on the South Island are you guys?

Down on the South end on the west in the "Parks" kind of area (Te Anua, Fiordland, Queenstown, Milford Sound) or over on the east side in Dunedin, or up by Christchurch?

When i was there a few years back we spent most of our time in on the Southern Island, and in the kind of "Greater" Otago area. On the South Island we never made it north of Christchurch, and on the North Island we were mostly in the Auckland area (though we did get out to Rotorua for a day) the hike on Rangitoto was fun, Third Volcano i have been on. :)

We started in Picton, went over to Nelson, down to Westport, Fox Glacier and are now on our way to Queenstown/Te Anua. Will probably go to Doubtful or Milford Sound before heading up to Christchurch.

The one lane blind bridge on SH 6 is still fixed in my memory. And where else do you find one lane car/railway bridges rolled into one.

It is incredible, but we have been only doing the outdoor scenery so far. And I don't think IO could even come close.

Nah, the clubs are too pretty to actually use, except the spears/chopping staffs are pretty cool.

Food is excellent. Nothing strange by western standards and some really good food. Lots of beef and Lamb, on plate and in the fields. The fields also have a lot of deer, which is interesting.

Tried the whitebait which is a delicacy here. Didn't do much for me one way or the other.

Or any locations from the LotR shoots? Or Hercules/Xena, for that matter?

BTW, I think a lot of us will be disappointed if we don't get a Cool Pix thread from you when you return. Not family photos or anything personal, but some shots of the lovely scenery (urban, rural, and wild) would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a great trip...and a great adventure...don't forget to try the wine...the Sauvangion Blanc is quite a delight (but mostly is a summer wine IMO...and its what early Spring their now?)...they are also crafting some better Pinot Noirs of late - please let me know if you come accross any you might specifically recommend (If you imbibe any that is...)

When i was there, they were actually having a HUGE auction of tons of props from Xena as it was wrapping production i think.

Yeah the Wines in some places in the Otago area where one of the reasons my travel partner wanted to spend so much time in that area, i ended up doing a lot of driving on the south island...

You been stopped by a Sheep crossing yet, it isn't a drive through New Zealand untill you get stopped for 30 minutes as TONS of sheep cross the road.

One of the biggest things we noticed about the food, wasn't the difference in it it was all very good, but the service was very different, not that it was bad service, but by American standards it was much ... "slower"... It was remarked upon by my co-worker/friend Jenny who came over and worked here from NZ for a few years, and went back recently, that it was insainly fast here, everyone rushing about, there is just a nice, slower more relaxed mentality there.
