HeroQuestFrance -

Perpignan, eh?

Figures; Catalan-types always DID rebel against established ruling bodies.
Not that I blame you.

Anyway, now that I've insulted you, congrats on getting the stuff from otherworld. No, it's not directly supporting DF, which doesn't directly put any money in their pockets, BUT, it also doesn't put extra funds in the taxman's coffers, either - which is a GOOD thing!
Besides, the more stuff otherworld sells to you, the more NEW stuff he can buy from DF! So, what comes around, goes around; it just takes a little longer, sometimes.
Of course, if some people in Former Colonial Powers would vote their respective governments' protectionist tax policies OUT, they could have BRAND-NEW STUFF cheaply.

THINK ABOUT IT, GENTLEMEN

See ya!

The trouble is that none of the main parties over here have killing off protectionist taxes in their manifestos. UK Duty ain't so bad, the problem is VAT, which is a European tax - basically, as far as I can see, it funds the junketing that the European parliament/Commission and the zillions of hangers on get up to. I am not 'anti-Europe', but I am very against the hugely wasteful institutions it has spawned. There's no way that should be able to add 17.5% to the cost of EVERYTHING I buy (except books, food and kids clothing). I resent that very strongly indeed. I really, really, resent that they charge VAT on imports, and particularly that they even charge it on the shipping costs of getting stuff into the EU.

I begin to wonder just what being in Europe does, that's worth me paying so much tax. I can't think of anything about it that is that valuable, off hand. But that's politics, and doesn't belong on here.

Phil,

This IS Non-Gaming Talk, so if YOU want to talk about politics, and I want to talk about politics, then we can rant 'n' rave. Especially when it adversely affects Dwarven Forge and it's loyal customers.

Wanna know what being in Europe does for you? That's easy; just look at how fast you can lose weight, especially in the left hip pocket (that being where most American men carry their wallet; Brits may differ, of course).

And, of course, mes amis les Francaise, some of whom (NOT ALL; there are quite a few Frenchmen - and -women - who are genuine good guys/gals) seem to resent 200+ years of history even more than some Brits do, especially where Americans and Brits are concerned. The French jerks resent that we (Brit & US) bailed them out of TWO World Wars, giving rise to the somewhat slanted dig some Americans love to toss around: 'Ah, the French; they'll be around for us, as long as they need us.' And there are some Brits who STILL hold the American Revolution and the War of 1812 against the U.S.: 'How dare those Colonials tell US we can't keep their silly little colonies? Or their sailors?'

Fortunately, idiots of those ilk are the minority in both countries - but they are a very LOUD minority. In fact, they're as loud as the Idiot minority here in the States, who proclaim - LOUDLY - that America should rule the world, etc., etc. Which just goes to prove that stupidity is NOT limited to one or two nations; we ALL get them!

Unfortunately, protectionist tax laws eventually hurt EVERYONE they touch, both those who levy them, and those who pay them. Because sooner or later, what goes around, comes around. And if enough people get angry enough, taxes and duties levied by one country get levied in reverse; Nation A starts protectionism, Nation B retaliates, and both countries wind up paying too much for basic goods. Still, it's better to trade taxes than nukes, which is where things would end up a few centuries ago, if they'd had nukes then. Because if you think about it, nations fight over trade, usually.

Oh, and Phil; that VAT you're paying is sometimes, in this country, called Protection. In Europe, when people are speaking bluntly, it's called Danegeld. Think about it.

World History 101 and Economics 102 are dismissed for the week. Please prepare a rebuttal of 200 words or less, if you disagree with today's lecture.

See ya!
