IKEA 8 Years, 2 Months ago
My wife and I moved to Michigan about two months ago. I finally got the time to re-assemble the IKEA Expedit bookshelf I'd had to disassemble two moves ago. I'd bought replacement wooden dowels for the assembly (a number had fallen out in the previous moves), but couldn't find the screws. So, I figured a quick trip to IKEA's website might help.

I found the IKEA ChatBot to be one of the most amazing inventions of the twenty-first century. In terms of uselessness and annoyance, it sets new standards. It depicts a friendly, helpful IKEA representative named Anna, whose facial expression changes in accordance with her friendly and useless replies to your queries.

So, I thought perhaps a quick web search might prove useful. After all, IKEA is common enough that others may have found themselves in similar predicaments, and had found replacement screws. I just needed to know the right size screws.

What I found was a marvelous gem regarding assembly of the IKEA Expedit bookshelf. I heartily recommend perusing this step-by-step guide, whether or not you ever have even thought about getting something from IKEA. My wife and I laughed our selves silly.

Quite enjoyable story! Being Swedish, sitting by my Ikea Galant desk, with a wall full of Ivar bookshelves behind me, the Olle kitchen chairs surrounding the Forsby kitchen table, with the Ektorp sofa in the living room... And another bunch of about ten pieces, including another wall of Ivar, I don't really seem to have that much trouble with the stuff...

Unless, of course, you tag along to my job, which is a translation agency, specializing in difficult languages with funny letters, and sit down for a chat with my colleague Ali, who is doing the layout work for the Arabic Ikea catalogues... You see, he has a LOT to talk about when it comes to dealing with Ikea Älmhult, the catalogue producers. If you think that a couple of lost screws is annoying, you REALLY should try to deal with Ikea Älmhult... Ok, keeping track of a hundred different catalogues IS a bit of a task, espcecially since they all contain different mixes of a number of fixed double page layouts.

The amazing thing, though, is that they actually manage to bring the catalogue out in time, in HUGE numbers, and Ikea IS one of the largest retail companies in the world.

Swedish efficiency? Let me think about that one for a while... :-)

PS. Even though the running joke is about missing screws, I have actually never had that problem, and I have assembled I don't know how many pieces of Ikea furniture (the office is full of Galant desks, too, by the way...).

PPS. My wife just reminded me that I did suffer from a bout lumbago when I assembled HER Galant desk... You know, burly Swedes and all that...

Kradlo--where the Hell is Byron Center, MI?!? I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, moved to Dearborn in 95, and lived there just up till September of '04 when the wife, son, and I moved to Madison, WI. I've never even heard of Bryon Center! How are you liking things there so far?

P.S. Byron Center is just south of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Hope this helps Dante

Yep, just a little town of around 5,000 souls on the south side of Grand Rapids. We're right off of Hwy 131, so we have convenient freeway access, yet we're still cozy and secluded. It's the best of both worlds.

As for Michigan itself, we love it here. The freeway traffic is nearly nonexistent compared to San Francisco, the neighbors are neighborly, and spring has sprung, bringing flowering trees, bumblebees, and even some grass among the dandelions. "Whack-a-Mole" has a whole new meaning to me now, with my constant war with the pesky rodents. I'm feeling like Bill Murray in "Caddyshack."

We're particularly in love with the far more affordable cost of living here. It gave us the opportunity to become first time home owners, and our home here is beautiful.

Now, if only they'd build an IKEA near here (the nearest is in Illinois). I liked going there just for the Swedish meatballs in their cafeteria. Oh, and I did find the screws (I'd packed them in the same box as the shelf pieces), so my Expedit bookshelf is back together, even without the aid of two burly Swedes.

Life is good. :)

Chuckle. Dante, people forget that there's another 1/4 of the state (of MI) to the South-West. :)
Okay, I'm ignorant of geography, really. However, I did live in Portage (Kalamazoo area) for 18+ years, and in GR (Grand Rapids), and now in Garden City (Metro Detroit). Most people from the West side of MI probably have never heard of places like Garden City - we think the entire South-East area is Detroit and I'd bet most of the teenagers think Detroit is the state capitol (try Lansing, but neither my wife nor I knew that when we were teenagers).

I really should find a solid IT job over on the west side of the state so I could get closer to family.

62 sets and counting. In addition, a boatload of individual pieces or sets of pieces.

Thanks, RF--I missed that post.

weaver--I have a cousin--two actually--in Garden City so I spent a lot of time there. Dearborn's actually just right up the road from you also but I'm sure you know that. Hop on Ford road West about 15 minutes and I could get to GC. Small world. ;-}~

Kradlo--far out, man. Sounds like a nice place. I've been out to Kalamazoo for a weekend when my Uncle had a place there and I've also been to East Tawas and Lewiston--where he lives now. That's way up 'der, up Nort', ya. (as they say up der. heh heh).

I also used to get out to Grand Rapids a couple times a year for business. Unfortunately, I never made it up to Mackinac I've heard it's really nice there. Been to the UP near Marquette, and a dozen other more "local" places a lot closer to Detroit proper.

My wife and I have been very happy since we moved to Madison, WI. I totally fell in love with this place the first time I came out here to see her in person for the first time (long story that involves me setting up a certain website that became world famous for about three solid months). ;-}~

I've only been back to MI twice in the last year. Once last January ('05) when my father passed away, and once this past February because my best friend was running an armor game in a local con.
