TOPIC: Who are you?

Who are you? 9 Years, 5 Months ago
Name: Javier
Country: Spain
Age: Almost 30 (ooouch!!)
Job: Software developer.

Hi everybody!

First of all, I apologyze for my english, I know is far from perfect. I'm a newby here, although I've been "watching your adventures" in these forums during more than a year today. The forum in which I read most is in "Cool photos" because I love to see your pics. I have a pretty big directory with subdirectories with your names with the photos you have posted.

I've been shocked when I've seen that Chandle lives in Spain! :D I thought I was the only one who was into this here. I was thinking about posting some of the photos (I always take a lot) of my games, and right then I see this thread where everybody introduces himself, and... well! here I am...

Well, about my DF Inventory (don't expect nothing like you've seen in the previous posts!) I've got Wicked Aditions I & II, Traps Set II, Deluxe Room Set, Floor set, and a quite great bunch of individual pieces of rooms, passages, caverns, furniture, doors... etc. And I'm waiting for my first mystic blocks order to arrive! I also use a lot of HQ furniture, some grendel, Mage Knight Dungeons, and some more.

I begun into fantasy games with the Joe Dever's Lone Wolf Books at 8 years (I don't remember well), and today I continue living the Lone Wolf Adventures Thanks to the AON Proyect, because in Spain this collection only was edited until #10 or #12. (I can tell that defeating the lords of darkness has taken to me all my life!!!)

Then a couple of years later I discovered HeroQuest and I went crazy. After 3 or 4 years of pause in gaming, at 15 - 16 years, I gathered a couple of friends and started RPG, Stormbringer, Runequest, Star Wars, Cthulhu, Rolemaster, Pendragon, AD&D (Ravenlof, Dark Sun, Dragonlance), LOTR, Aquelarre (A really nice Spanish game)... well, and tryed a lot more during 8 years.

Then I faded away in the mirror... :? until 4 years ago!!! After I left games (job, girls, etc...) :P I discovered again the games thanks to Mage Knight, and then Mage Knight Dungeons. My always impossible love for the minis and the "tiny real dungeons" become true when they released MK Dungeons 3D. But then... then I found the comparatives in the terranosaur... and met DF and HirstArts. I've never had the time to paint minis, but from then until today I've painted a bunch (not much as a real painter) as well as some terrain and furniture. But even so, I've not the time to deal with Castle Molds, so I run headlong to DF. First I used only to combine with MK 3D, (who said it is not posible?) but at least, some months ago I had gathered the stuff enough to fullfil the "empty table syndrome" with only DF stuff!! So here I am...

I've been reading your post in silence for more than a year and admiring the wonderful pics you post, and obviously, comparing with most of you I'm in minor leagues, but I'm happy enough with my setups to want to show them... :)

I begun playing MK Dungeons, and started "tunning" the rules. Today I have finally a "dungeon crawling" system based in mage knight but with "expanded rules" that allow reaching higher levels, and confront limitless situations. I use MK figures (Heroes, Monsters, etc) and D&D WoTC miniatures (tiny, Large, Huge) all together thanks to a system that I've developed, that has not the need of paper for keeping the status of the Non-Click-Based figures of WoTC. (My primary objective is to keep the game rules as easy and fast as possible and as far away from the paper way for status tracking as I can) Even the Sorcerer's spells are MK Spell Cards.

2 Years ago I begun to play Legend of 5 Rings as PC (D10)... Returning to RPG!

Well!! I think I MUST stop my hands before lightnings hit my head!! Last things about me: I Like nature activities, drawing, sport, music, reading, comics, I am part-time Otaku (anime, manga) and I'm going to Japanese language classes. I Like also card games, board games, video games (I'm out of it but still like it), and I'm a Star Wars Fan, but my greatest vice is Tolkien's Middle Earth, and his languages and writing systems. I've been into martial arts for 10 years but I got out about 6 years ago (sigh) Anyway... happy surprise to see so many martial artists in this forum!

My other great vice is my wonderful gaming girlfriend that don't punish me when her PC's recieve those nasty bites from my beasts...

See you, and thank you for reading!

Arsthein.

(Oh! almost forgot. My nickname is from "Knights of Xentar Japanese Video Game", but the original name was Arstein, the black knight)

From Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 10th Edition:
piffle:
noun: trivial nonsense.
adjective: of little worth or importance.
There is also a verb form, but I do not think Tdaraa meant it that way.

In other words, like what Tdaraa said, your English is just fine.
On the other hand, our (meaning your DF comrades) ability in Spanish is probably quite dismal.
Then again, Fernando, a friend of mine from Madrid, says that most North Americans do not speak Spanish; they speak Mexican.
To him almost no one in the Americas actually speaks Spanish; they speak a dialect of it in his opinion.
He does have a bit of a point with all of the AmerInd and modified American English terms one can find in Cuban, Puerto Rican and Mexican.
Plus, it truly does not sound like Spanish.
It is like a Haitian, Cajun or Quebeçois saying they speak French;
no native Frenchman I have ever met on the subject says that they do.
Then again, those folks, on those wee islands north of the Continent, do not think that we, colonials, actually speak English either.
Such a wonderfully fun world we live in.
On top of that I cannot count the number of times that I have heard from Australians that we, Americans or as they put it "Yanks", are the ones with the accent problem, not them.

:D Yeah you're right.

It's true that Spanish in Spain is not like Spanish in America, but not much different. I think it's not important what is the original, which one came first, etc. The important point here I think is that everybody can understand without doubt each other.

About American English... well! I agree that is far more dificult to understand (for spanish people) somebody speaking english from USA that from England, but it doesn't means that american english has an "accent problem" :) most cases is that you speak quickly!! ;) For me is more difficult but has more rythm. And once you are reading both "types" of english, there are no truly differences, (in my humble opinion, of course)

But in the Spanish case, you immediately can identify (even if you are reading spanish) from where comes that spanish, because not only the accent, but the way of saying the same thing a lot of times is different! But that give us a lot of jokes and funny moments!! ;)

Anyway, "different" doesn't mean "worst". :D

Thank you for the definition of "piffle", I think I need a better dictionary soon!

I'm really impressed! So you've been a great spanish talker! :o

And even talking with the Andalucia's accent... that's not easy!! not at all!! :D

I've not been much in Malaga so I don't know what you mean... sorry. :?

I know what you mean with "use it or lose it" haha... That happened to me with the English language when I stopped gaming. Unless I listen a lot of music in English, I did not have to make phrases on my own, or things that need to make an effort to remember how to use the language. I've always be able to read english quite well, but to "say things" is other issue...

Of course I know the guys here will be merciful with my typo... but always is kind to ask for ;) I decided to "open my mouth" here because of the great atmosphere I felt between you all. :D

Well, I'm happy you know Spain and you like it (regardless "Malaga's conflict" :P) and I can feel envy you've travel so much!! :) hope one day I can go to Japan...

Arsthein,

Howdy... Welcome Etc... (Been Offline for a Bit So This is the First Time I Have Seen your Greeting)... As To Your English, Well... as many Folks Have Already Commented, it is Understandable and Frankly Quite Good...

It is Great to See another HQ Fan in Here, not to Mention Someone Else who likes to "Tweak" Rules from Various Games... (I Can Hardly Leave the Rules alone for any Game...<Grin>...

As to the Amount of DF you Own, I Don't think anyone who is a part of the "Regular" DF Community (On these Boards at any rate), Worries too much about who has More, Who has Less etc... We (Mostly) Just Enjoy Sharing Discussions about the Hobby itself...

Anyway, if belated, Welcome to the Boards!

Greetings milord! :)

Thanks for the answer, I'm glad too to verify that I'm not the only mad about ("tweak"?!? nice word, got to add it to my dictionary ;) ) tweaking the rules. I was starting to think that I was some kind of heretic!!!

About HQ, actually I played the basic version of HQ, (Spanish version, I'm not sure if it's right like the original) It was the first time I made something like been a Dungeon Master... with my older brother as player!!! XDDD what a great times. When I saw the later expansions that GW came out with, I was crazy but... I was already into RPG... too late for HQ and me...

During all those years of RPG I forgot the great sensation of moving the heroes into the dungeon with your own hands!!! :D

Is goooooood to be back again in the dungeon!

Arsthein,

I Think that the Spanish Version of Hero Quest was The Same as the "European" Version... Which was a Bit Different than What was Released over here in the States... That was Milton Bradley Fronting for GW... Then GW Released their Advanced HQ which was Really Just a Board Game Version of War Hammer, and Added a lot of Role-play Potential... Later GW Released War Hammer Quest, (Which I Think is still Available), which had Gone Back to the Board Game Feel of the Original Game... But With a lot of New Miniatures! And of Course some Kewl Game Tiles...

I Really Liked the Original Actually, and When I "Tweaked" The HQ Rules I was Moving it towards being a Very Simple RPG, Great for One Night Adventures and Introducing New Players to Fantasy RPGing... That having been Said, in a recent Move I Managed to Lose all of my Spell, Adventure and Treasure Cards that Came with the original HQ... So I have Been Slowly Trying to Rebuild the Deck Myself... The Advantage here of Course is that it allows me to Add New Potions and Encounters to the Deck... Not to Mention Spells...

I Print them on Blank 3x5 Cards... The Art is not Great But they Work...

Really happy to recieve your greeting, Brave heart! Thank you so much! :D

Oh, man, MyLord, so sorry... I really loved those wonderful art from Gary Chalk, I could never forget the surprise when I open the HQ box and saw the cards and all the stuff was drawn by the same artist that the 8 first books of lone wolf, that was my previous step in fantasy.

Sorry I don't have a scanner so I could send you the pics.

Here we have never seen (at least, I have no news about it) from War Hammer Quest, only about advanced heroquest... man, I'm happy I'm already on this dungeon and heroes's ship...!!! If not, I would be getting mad with all the HQ stuff you are speaking about!! I still have the HQ box, figures, cards... the quest book... even I've painted the figures as statues, and the skeletons and mummy as decoration for dungeons. It's great!!

They've released some similar board game from WoTC for Dungeons and Dragons, but it has not the beauty of the HQ furniture at all... I still use the HQ furniture for my games.

Well, I'm going far from where I wanted to go.... I wanted to say that if you need some info about the cards, don't hesitate to tell me. I'll try to help. :)
