My wife and I are talking about making a trip to New Zealand in the next year or so. Anyone have any must see recommendations there. We may have the family in tow. I went about 5 years ago before I was married and skied from Queenstown and saw some of Rotarua already. But am interested in hearing of other hotspots.

Weta Workshop in Wellington.
I have heard that there are some really cool tours about the LotR and KK props.

WillOH;

TAKE LOTS of PICTURES!!

And then bring them back and post them..so we can enjoy your trip as well.

Okay?

Please?

Pretty-please, with sugar on it??

Okay, I know, I'm getting a little weird here.

Have a GREAT trip.

I've heard that ChristChurch is beautiful, but I have no first-hand knowledge of NZ. The closest I ever got was beautiful downtown Saigon. At the time, that was NOT a fun place to be.

Um Jim, you're scaring me... But digital camera and 2 Gb cards will be along. Weta workshop sounds like a great idea. We are going to start at friends house in Auckland, but I want to do Milford Sound (South Island) this time round. Though the plane trip with kids (They will be 3.5 and 2 then) might be painful.

Heya!
I was born in Columbus Ohio..cool.
Anyhow, my parenets spent 3 weeks in New Zealand. The did both islands, so the glaciers, the big trees, discovered NZ hamburgers (instead of lettuce and tomato they do beets and coleslaw...it's actually really good) and saw lots of sheep. I am sure they did more, but I was like 11 when they went, over 20 years ago. They loved their trip...and in the times before digital cameras... we saw lots of slide shows!! Oh and they brought back all sorts of native stuff...

So enjoy!

A few things to remember when in the NZ, travel takes a HECK of a lot longer than it does here in the US, I spent about 2 weeks between NZ and Oz a few years ago, and far enjoyed NZ over Oz.

On the South Island

For Nature type things one of the things we did was spent a lot of time in the Milford Sound area, and further up on the West Coast, enjoyed the Milford Sound a lot though, with all of the parks in the Fiordland area, lots of hiking, boat trips and other things you can do in that area, but just be mindfull of the differene in season and plan your trip so stuff you are wanting to do isn't closed, we ran into a few things that had just closed for the season, it going into fall when we left here in spring. The Glaciers were cool too, as well as the Waitomo Caves - Glow Worm caves, or going to see things like the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony, or i think you can do the swim with dolphins, or hiking in Southland, or trips out to Stewert Island, they even run trips out to Antartica from there if memory serves.

Dunedin is a decent sized city on the far southern part of the island, as well as Queenstown, and Christchurch for more citified tourust stuff.

Central Otago is where they did a lot of the filming for the movies if memory serves, (it sure looked like it could be the shire from out the window as we were zipping down the road), lots of vinards in the area and where bunge jumping started.

On the North Island in Raupehu the Tongariro Nat Park was really cool, with Volcanoes (now walked on active valcanoes in both Hemispheres).

And make sure you check out the Maori, the Hangi we went to was very fun and interesting, they did the whole thing with the powhiri and taki or wero and lasted a few hours for the whole ceremony.
