If you're beginning, I'd suggest sticking with acrylics. Easier to fix mistakes and easier to clean your brushes. I accidentally tried to thin enamel paint with water and a brush once and it wasn't pretty. I thought it was acrylic when I bought it.

Stefans brushers are nice, but too big for all but the most basic of miniature painting (like priming the whole thing or a quick first coat on a cloak. For dwarvenite and other terrain they are awesome, very nice premium quality brushes. Well cared for they last a long time. Drybrushing is hard on brushes, but it also doesn't matter if they are a bit haggard when you are drybrushing.

For minis Reaper's set of three that come with the Learn to Paint series are nice brushes to start with. It is too bad Reaper cannot seem to get LtP back in stock. I contacted them and was promised that the whole line would be back by ReaperCon. Well, that was 3 months ago and still no LtP. The brush set is still available and inexpensive. Getting a set of those will help you figure out what you want and need to add. The fine brushes wear out pretty quick and it is important to keep these pristine as once they are worn it is hard to paint accurately.

Have fun!

Thanks AnimeSensei -- I was considering enamels just for specific metallic colors, but that's probably unnecessary at this stage.

kitenerd, thanks for the advice! I see two different brush sets on Reaper and it looks like Brush Set II is what I need most ("Brush Set" is one detail brush and a couple larger sizes for dry brushing, while "Brush Set II" contains three sizes of detail brushes). The set savings aren't huge compared to getting brushes individually, but since I don't know exactly what I want, I think it's a good place to start.

With Pokorny's paints covering a lot of basic colors, I might get Reaper paints in gold and silver, plus maybe a dark brown and a purple. Maybe one of the smaller "paint sets" (Reaper Master Series HD Paint Set 2 contains a couple purples and other useful colors, while Heavy Gear Blitz Master Series Paint Set is more expensive but contains many basic colors plus several metal colors).

Pokorny's paints will be two white, two black, two Cavern Dry Brush, and one of each of the rest.

Anything obvious I'm forgetting?

The paints go a long way, I don't know if you need 2 of anything unless you have over 10 sets to paint.

Cavern drybrush is what you will use the most of I think....If you have lots of caverns of course...also earthstone...

Thank you, Stefan -- I pledged for 10 sets of unpainted Caverns, but I plan to experiment with some variations (frost, slime, ancient volcanic, new wet cavern, dry and cracked, gem-encrusted or ore-nuggets, a digging creature's lair, etc.). Your paints will also be great for a whole lot of Bones figures and dungeon dressing, Elye's gates and doors, figure bases, etc.

AnimeSensei, I figure having extra Black and White will be useful since I'm planning to try mixing paints -- and adjusting shades will occur more often than entirely new color mixes. The Cavern Dry Brush is because I have so many Caverns to paint, and I want to have some paint left over after I'm done.

Sounds like Earthstone or Base Gray might be useful getting 2, since Earthstone was used for both Caverns and Dungeon Tiles, and Base Gray was used heavily for the Dungeon Tiles (which I still need to paint). But I can probably mix a decent Gray if I need to (even if it's slightly off). Or, of course, I can always order more paint in the future...

Well, three days left to decide!

@Stefan - Now that we have some clarification on the paints, are they selling any better? I really would hate for you to lose money on them as they're great paints.

Stefan,I think your paints will sell better once you do a few painting vids on using them.

There will probably be a big uptick this fall when they are on the DF site too. Right now DF is selling to a closed group. A group of 3500 to be sure, but still a clsoed group.
