Pokorny Paint Question 6 Months, 1 Week ago
Are Stefan's paints suitable for miniature work? I'm almost out of my Reaper Pure Black and was wondering if I want to get more from my FLGS or get an $8 bottle from DF...

Re:Pokorny Paint Question 6 Months ago
When I first began painting my Game Tiles in October, I was blogging about it on another forum. From my notes:

"For the paint itself, it seems to be a little more fluid than Reaper, and WAY more than Vallejo. It really does seem to stick well to the piece as is, without any pre-priming. I guess I would compare it to the (consistency of) brush on primer from Vallejo. It really is good paint though - very consistant coloring throughout, and coats well. I am waiting until tonight to talk about "tackiness," but I don't expect there to be any."

Since then, I have been using it for a few months, but specifically, only on Dungeon Game Tiles, not on miniatures.

I can speak to the fact that Vallejo sticks to it well, if you use it as a "basecoat."

However, I DO think that the pigments are not as finely ground as "miniature paints" like Vallejo and Reaper.

If you are just doing basecoats of figures, or trying to darken another paint, I would say give it a shot. Detail work? Maybe, maybe not.

I cannot speak to how well they thin or break up in water, though, so if you are looking to thin them, there MIGHT be an issue with "color breakage."

Hope this helps!

So i have a random question for the Pokorney Paints...

I have heard several references to using a hair dryer to heat set the paints at certain steps. Is this necessary? And what does it actually do?

To the best of my knowledge, this just accelerates drying. I don't think it's necessary unless you're in a very cold or humid environment. I could be wrong, though.

Re:Pokorny Paint Question 6 Months ago
Jenney, in my experience (and I have been painting the tiles for 5 months and blogging about my journey here,) I have never needed to use a hair dryer on the tiles.

With that said:

I do know that when people were attempting to replicate the reddish/black Chamber of Sorrows color scheme, using paints that were NOT Pokorny, they had issues, and needed to use a hair dryer to get those specific paints dried.

In my experience, I actually have issues with my other miniature paints drying slowly, but the Pokorny ones dry fast for me.

Hope this helps!

Has anyone noticed the Pokorny Paint coming off when scratched? How much does it take to chip?

I haven't seen any chips coming off at all yet.

And if the only reason to use the hair dryer is to dry the paints faster, and not some sort of 'heat set' then I will continue to paint as I normally do. Though I would definitely be up for adding a set of Water Paints and a Set of Lava Paints to my order if they are released later.

If they don't I might try some of the clear acrylics that are being discussed... but thank goodness that this isn't something that I need to worry about right this minute.

If DF comes out with a Paint set, I would definitely be in for the purchase... whatever the colors. Perhaps I will ask for a full set of reaper paints for christmas so that I can add details to individualize each of the pieces.

thanks everyone

i have mostly citadel paints... but it has been a while since I pulled them out... but now that my oldest is 7 I am having more time for this... I have a couple of other bottles here and there where they had a color I wanted that citadel didn't, but I cut my teeth painting Warhammer Fantasy... I have a bunch of Fire Orcs that I posted a while ago.

I've been quite happy with Reaper paints. Also I can vouch for the fact that they work well with Game Tiles. That's what I used to paint my doors, barrels, etc. from the first KS.

One of my local game stores stocks all the Vallejo line of paints as well as their other products so I have a lot of their stuff. I have not had any issue with application onto DF tiles. I also have P3 which my the other game store in town sells and they are nice paints too. Again, I haven't had any issues on DF tiles or other pieces. Lastly, I have a few bottles of Citadel paints and they come in squat bottles with big lids... I'm not keen on the litds (which P3 has as well). I prefer the eyedropper type bottles that Vallejo paints come in.

I do really like the dropper bottles. So much so that I intend to find some that have screw on dropper tops to put other companies' paints into. The Vallejo bottles are awesome.

My players rue the day I bought "Dragon Mountain". Ever since they give every creature a bit more respect. You never know when the GM will decide that this group is crafty...
