TT - Wizards has put much of their back catalogue up as PDFs here:
www.dndclassics.com/

For hard copies, I tend to check eBay, Amazon, Half Price Books, and of course my FLGS. Hope that helps.

Hello All, just checking in. I'm ready to start rolling characters whenever we are ready. I love the idea of getting that part out of the way for a few reasons. More time to game, we also get a feel for our group, background information isn't thrown together last minute.

I have no idea what I'll be playing until I roll the dice. Will we be making a couple characters each?

Hello Adventurer's

You should make one character of 2nd level to 4th level:

Fighters, Rangers, Clerics: 2nd level
Magic users, Illusionists: 3rd level
Thieves: 4th level

I rely mostly on your own honor to roll your characters...4d6, discard the lowest number...generate 6 scores, arrange them in order of preference:)

No character with ridiculous scores will be accepted...like having 2 or more 18's or 3 abilities of 17, etc......(unless your rolls are filmed in one steady shot for proof and submitted to me)

don't worry, If your character is truly lame, like all 10's, 11's and nothing higher than 14 you may re-roll.....I am not draconian....your character should have at least one score of 15 and NOT MORE than 1 score of 18 or two rolls of 17 or three rolls of 16(or higher)....before playing I will review all characters and judge if they are in balance with all others...characters who truly need help may receive "grants"...

No magical items:(

Hit Points and Money will be rolled before the game...you will be required to shop in the town of Valor, prices won't be taken from the Players hand book, they may vary from store to store, encumberance shall be a factor, you will be given official Dwarven Forge Patron character sheets designed by me:)

Good Luck!

Hi Stefan,

I'm getting totally excited for this! Plane tickets are bought and I picked up an AD&D players handbook. I'm totally fine with the character gen rules you put forth.

That said, I'm curious, did you guys end up going with WWeist's proposal for last year's game (below)? Did that work well and would you recommend it for us? Or do you prefer the simpler approach that you've outlined here?

I'm happy with either approach and just want to hear your thoughts.

Best,

Eden

I would suggest that each character start with 18,000 (and 1 if 1st Ed.) experience points. I would also suggest that they start with the following Ability Score numbers: 17, 15, 13, 11, 9, & 7.

From this starting point, generate the character with the following guidelines:

1. Ability scores may be raised by expending Experience points with the following progression: 1,000xp for an increase of 1, 2,000xp for an increase of 2, 4,000xp for an increase of 3, 8,0000xp for an increase of 4, and 16,000xp for an increase of 5. The most obvious example would be a Warrior (Fighter) who would want the highest Strength possible so he would be 2nd level (2001xp) with an 18/99 Strength (18=1000xp, 18/50=2000xp, 18/75=4000xp, 18/90=8000xp, 18/99=16000xp). 2001xp + 16000xp = 18000xp Ability scores would not be allowed to be lowered in favor of raising another for free. Racial modifiers would be applied before altering scores. EDIT: Age modifiers are assumed in the raw Ability Scores (no Age modifiers allowed)

2. Magic Items may be allotted by expending Experience points according to the Dungeon Master's Guide (and Unearthed Arcana?) experience point values. For example: A 4th level Wizard (Magic-User, 10001xp) would like Bracers of Defense AC 5 (2500xp), a Wand of Frost (4000xp), a Magical Quarterstaff +2 (500xp), and Gauntlets of Dexterity (1000xp). 10001xp + 2500xp + 4000xp + 500xp + 1000xp = 18001xp. No magical bonuses of any item would be allowed to be greater than +2 (this would also exclude multiple "plus" items that have a bonus of more than +2 at certain times). All players would be encouraged to develop a backstory for each magical item. EDIT: My example is wrong. There should be two more restrictions: 1. The total amount of XP spent on Magic Items should not exceed 50% of the XP used for Class levels. Therefore, the most that could be spent on Magic Items is 6000xp (and 12001xp on character levels) 2. The number of Magic Items should not exceed the number of Class levels (a 4th level Magic User would be limited to 4 magic items.)

3. One "Item of Quality" would be allowed (Such as a Masterwork non-magical Long Sword +1 Damage) which would also deserve a backstory.

4. All other normal items would be allowed providing you have the encumberance capacity to carry it. Exotic Items would need DM approval (however, I may have drifted into 3rd edition...) For example: A human Cleric wielding a Dwarven Warhammer would require some explaining.

5. Coin carried would be up to 100gp per level of character. (determined based on Player's Handbook average prices for normal items)

Eden,

I am not playing and am certainly not the final authority... but you should ALWAYS roll your stats!!!!

I love rolling dice and never miss an opportunity - every point buy character or standard array character, always seems soulless and optimized to me - nothing like an oddball dice roll to suggest the personality for the character - i do dice pool (typically 27) and let people swap one set of stats... so there is always one stat that is oddly low or oddly high for that type os character, usually it becomes a part of thier personality (acrobatic wizard, frail thief, nerdy know it all cleric...).

Have fun, wish i was going to be at the table!

Eden,

I was going to experiment with another approach...seems much simpler, I'm not a math guy...

I would like to keep it low magic too....

I really mostly prefer 1st level characters but I know most of you are very experienced and that it's a one night thing...but I am flexible If you guys are after another character generator...

one of the Patron groups want to teleport/journey their current gaming group into my world...I warned them they might not survive, but they are game for it nevertheless....

Sounds good Stefan! I'm excited to make my character using the guidelines you posted. I think I'll make a backup character just in case I blunder my way to an early death. ;-)

Stefan,

I am in Wweist's group for our game later this year (november?). Are you OK if I film my stat rolls? I always prefer to roll rather than pregen... Call me crazy... Also I need to email you some specifics on items I chose out and also discuss a few character concepts (nothing major just do you prefer This class or That in your game).

Anywho - I'm super excited to see you guys in Nov!
Thanks again,

Hi Everyone, David K here.

Quick question: if we choose a demi-human race, can we multiclass? If so, how do we allocate/acquire experience? I propose to take the higher exp of the two classes permitted above and divide by two.
