Dungeon Entrances 8 Months, 4 Weeks ago
Hi Everyone!

I'm in the process of creating a series of large dungeon entrances / fortress gates designed to complement DF and other modular dungeons (but particularly to work with all my DF stuff!). In the near future I'll be running a small Kickstarter campaign to launch a production run cast in polymer resin which (hopefully!) some of you may be interested in. A few Forum members have already noticed some of my prototype pieces in some of the setups I've posted here and there, but I wanted to start a thread to show you all what I've been up to. Also, I have a question: what style of dungeon gate / entrance does everyone think would be most useful?

So far I have finished two pieces for the series. The first is the "Giant's Gate," a massive ironbound double door set in a stone wall. It's sized to accommodate D&D "huge" creatures, and works great as the entrance to a giant's dwelling, but also as the gate to a castle or fortified city.

The second is the "Monster Gate," a towering stone outcrop in the rough shape of a monstrous face, which has been modified by orcs or other malevolent beings, who have added a drawbridge-style "jaw" as well as a guard / archer platform behind the "eyes".

I have two more pieces well underway: one is a pillared temple; the other is a smaller double door, scaled for "medium" creatures, suitable for use as the entrance to a tavern, mansion, cathedral, or wizard's workshop.

What I'm wondering is, what else do you think would be great to have to add to your setups? I have a list of possibilities (all of which I plan to make sooner or later; but I want to focus on what seems most useful first):

1. A Dwarven Gate (massive stone & iron)
2. An Elven Gate (graceful but strong wood)
3. An Orcish Gate (crudely built of scavenged materials)
4. An Evil Overlord's Gate (iron spikes, demonic motifs)
5. A Hidden Gate (stone outcrop, door is invisible until opened)
6. A Fungus Gate (giant mushrooms create a natural arch / tunnel)
7. A Mine Entrance
8. A Massive Portcullis
9. A Crystal Cave
10. An Ice Cave
11. A Fiery Portal (Iron, with a removable "door" of fire)
12. A Doorway Half-Hidden Among Roots
13. Other...?

Which would you want most? (Further suggestions welcome!)

I hope to be launching this project quite soon, with some of these included as stretch goals. I look forward to hearing any thoughts from the DF community! More pics / info here: www.facebook.com/GriffinTamerStudio

And here are two photos showing the Giant's Gate and the Monster Gate. I will post more as additional pieces are finished.

All of these sound great!

But I'd like to see a natural cave entrance... that would be highly useful!

The giants gate you've already made is so desperately needed. There's nothing like it on the market that I've seen, and personally I need one nearly every other game. I'd really like to see a couple more versions of it, kinda like DF makes a few different doors to use. That way when I make a giant temple or ancient giant ruin I can use a few different doors. The monster one yur making looks cool too but I think it would be even cooler if it looked more like a specific monster, like a minotaur, a dragon, or even just a skull

I like the "rough look" of the monster gate.
And I LOVE that it has the platform on the inside... this is awesome, and it increases the usefulness dramatically!

Necromantic skull motifs are available on the market from several sources. GW tends to like skulls on things. I would like to see the mine entrance, the massive portcullis, the Elven, and the Dwarven. Those are the ones most likely to see the most use based on campaigns I have run and been in. I realize that will vary for everyone, but that is my personal list.

My players rue the day I bought "Dragon Mountain". Ever since they give every creature a bit more respect. You never know when the GM will decide that this group is crafty...

I've seen a couple skulls but not much else. A crude minotaur head or ape head chiseled into a cave entrance would be super cool

I love the archery stands behind the eyes. Seein as its a cave entrance though it'd be nice to see sized for large creatures. Then orcs could run out 2 at a time or trolls 1 at a time

Thanks for all the input everyone!

Galahad - What did you have in mind for a large magic portal? Something like the "arcane portal" from the D&D minis range (if you're familiar with that), only bigger? Also, what sorts of elemental gates did you have in mind-- structures literally made of flame, earth, water, etc., or more symbolically connected to the elements?

JasonYoung - A natural cave entrance is a great idea. So obvious I missed it, I guess (though I had something pretty natural looking in mind for the "hidden gate"). Something that will work with the upcoming DF Caverns Kickstarter would I'm sure be very useful!

Jimibones - Thanks - Yeah, it seemed to me that a nice functional large gate, not too "specific" and therefore useable for castles, cities, giants' dwellings, etc. would be very useful. Multiple doors might be a possibility (maybe a stretch goal...). I did in fact design three different doors for my smaller (medium sized) double doors; the master mold for those is in the pressure chamber right now, with luck I'll be able to cast some late tomorrow and have photos up soon.

Also-- the "Monster Gate" is indeed big enough for "large" creatures; I wanted it to be usable for a mounted mini or (as you suggest) a troll or ogre. Here are a couple more photos where you can see some minis for scale, and also the interior with the platform:

Love the interior of that monster gate, good stuff. Also, a shout out to Jeff and Stefan for allowing these kinds of posts in their forum. These forums are hands down my go to forums for minis and terrain. Team DF rocks.

Bashed in doors would be nice, especially a giant's gate.

I mean, seriously, what better way to put fear than your PCs than to have them ponder what was strong enough to tear these huge doors to shreds?

Ooooo dude I just had an awesome idea for u. U could make a huge giant door with a functioning medium door in it somewhere for their medium sized servants to come and go as they need, without needing assistance from a giant playing door man for "inferior" creatures
