Hero Forge custom 3D printed minis Kickstarter 2 Months, 3 Weeks ago
This is really worth having a look at:
www.kickstarter.com/projects/heroforge/customizable-3d-printed-tabletop-miniatures

I wonder if they called themselves "Hero Forge" having any reference to DF in mind.

3D printing for customized miniatures? Madness, I say, madness!

The name is also similar to HeroMachine, which is a 2D app that applies selectable clothing, armor, and accessory components to a set of figures.

While this concept is extremely cool, the thought of paying $20-$30 per mini is striking. I can see doing this for one or two very specialized and very needed mini's, imagine it will be a few more years before average pricing for this service gets more in line with typical mini prices.

Hmm... very interesting.

I've been working with Shapeways (the company that's handling their 3D printing) for years myself-- I have a shop on the Shapeways website, making jewelry and interesting dice-- and I had thought about this application. The problem is that, whatever they may say on the Kickstarter, the detail in these 3D prints isn't as good as you'll see on a nicely reproduced 'traditional' metal, plastic or resin mini. It's getting close, though; but if any of y'all are interested in this KS, I'd say definitely stay away from the 'lower detail' material, you'll probably be disappointed.

That said, it's awfully appealing to imagine a site where you can design your character from the ground up and have it printed for you as a one-of. Ten years from now this may be the preferred option for PCs, at any rate. (It'll probably never be as cheap as mass produced injection molded stuff, and therefore less appealing for dungeon monsters etc.)

The photos seem as detailed as a lot of traditional minis I've seen (the "high detail" material), and those details won't be lost if the (non-existent) molds aren't aligned properly like I see in a lot of traditional minis.

If they ever get to a place where you can pose monsters, I think it might sell the concept there. Or characters, for that matter -- I could get standing, combat, mounted, and seated figures of the same character!

That's super awesome. Half that price would be much more reasonable, but I may have to get in for just a single mini anyway. Havin the money for a custom pose would be awesome lol. I'd make it point to its dong with one hand and give the finger with the other

A Kickstarter with really great 'wow' factor, but paying $35 for a single 28mm mini is insanity to me.

I would pay $35 for a single 28mm figure if it was very detailed, very strong, very paintable, very customizable and I needed it.

Right now this KS has to few armor, weapon, clothing and most of all character features to interest me.

Right now this KS has two plastics, neither fit all needs for me to pay $35.

But I am happy if others are willing to invest in this KS. I just hope it see better plastics in the future and better character features, armor, weapon and clothing also.

I think this is the future of miniatures... but I am not keen to lay down 35 bucks for a single mini.

The future will get here right on time.

I can wait just a bit longer!

I got a couple mediums I paid about $25 each for, but they were painted when I got them and I still think I over paid a bit

I have to admit that I'd be a lot more confident about this KS if there was 1) access to their miniature designer and/or 2) a simple picture chart of character races and poses available. Even if these aren't the final or complete versions, it would highlight what is (or will be) available, and how easy or difficult it is (or will be) to design the mini that you want.

I don't know myself if I'll buy into that ks but i'm seriously considering.
Also, only the highly-detailed minis do interest me, being myself a reasonably good painter.

They don't have an online custom miniature creating tool available yet nor do they have developed all the 3D models of armors and weapons that will be available and I don't know how realistically they could already have that before the ks launch given the probable development costs. I guess a reasonable estimate of the available features and associated preliminary crude sketches would help me a lot. What strikes me most by this ks is that any added 3D feature that you would choose to be on the mini would dynamically adapt its shape to match the other components such as the armor to fit the size of the mini's chest or height and the fingers wrapping around the several shapes of weapons's handles such as shown in this screen capture of the "meet the team" video:

I don't know much about programming but this endeavor probably requires LOTS of work and in my mind requires a lot of capital, hence the ks.

I talked to my two gaming groups to know if they would chip in so that each player could have his customized mini and we're still debating. This way, pricing become more reasonable ($24.16 or $23 per mini if you choose the "full party" or "company" option). I guess people on this forum or elsewhere could form groups.

Anyway, whether I jump in in this ks or not, I'm psyched at seeing how 3D printing will affect our hobby in the years to come.
