Back from Egypt I've been thinking about hieroglyphics, temple pylons and all sorts of things belonging to one of the most ancient of all civilizations...

Pylons. Big huge tall structures forming the entrance to the temples.

I've considered building a pair of pylons with the entrance inbetween, but I will probably have to make it with cardboard, as a scale model of the Karnak pylons would be about 2 feet tall if scaled for my GW tomb kings, making them a perfect backdrop for a desert battle...

Last night I and my wife watched the first Indiana Jones movie - Raiders of the lost ark - and it was just as fun to re-visit as it was seeing it the first time!

But then I saw the pylons in the "map room" - and they simply sucked! The massive pylons should be set on a straight line, short side facing short side. Instead these pylons were parallell and on opposite sides of the temple compound insted of the same side! :(

willypold,

Have you seen the new Hirst-Art Egyptian molds? Really nice stuff if you have the time, plus you could highly modify their plans for your own with these molds.

Also check out Manor House Workshop in Italy. The models are pricy, but take a look at this Egyptian Temple. Are you kidding me!

Or, you could do a ruined version.

The HA molds look great, but will either create a very small temple or a _very_heavy_ temple...

I checked the Manor House page a while ago and their temple looks really good, although I miss the hypostyle and the inner sanctum... It could be used as about half of the main temple at Philae, for example, with the first pylon, the first courtyard and the second pylon. But without the hypostyle and the inner sanctum it looks truncated. Another solution could be just using a single pylon and the avenue of sphinxes and just pretend that the rest of the temple is back there somewhere...

I couldn't find any size information on the Manor House page, but some of the tallest pylons are around 40 meters high. 2 meters in the 25-30 mm scale should be about 3 cm, giving a pylon height of about 60 cm or 2 feet.

WillyPold,

Welcome Back, from the Honeymoon...

The real Issue I have with Egyption Stuff for Gaming is that it Does not Translate well for Scale... Ancient Egyption is Usually either Huge Open Spaces, or Very Tight Confined Areas, VERY unlike the Diversity Found in European inspired Dungeons... (At least from my admittedly minor Knowledge of the Subject)... So Making Egyption Temples for instance becomes a Matter of Space restrictions very Quickly... While Pyramids have next to nothing but Ramped Passages with just a Few odd Chambers...

Thanks! We had a wonderful time!

Typical tomb layouts are sort of boring, when considered as a gaming area - straight tunnel leading down, ending in large room - but using the HA Egyptian molds and doing regular dungeon pieces could be a way of getting the best of both worlds.

But I've always admired the proportions and outright impressiveness of the temple pylons and after having walked through a number of them I really would like to have one as a model, either as just that, or as something I can use with my gaming. I have an undead Warhammer army already, which is slowly being transformed into a tomb kings army. It all comes together, sort of...

Nice to have you back Willypold.
I presume the two of you were able to avoid the famous Nile mosquitos.

The Hirst Egyptian theme items are all right if you want to go that direction, work and mess.
Have you looked at the Egyptian terrain items that Armorcast cranks out?
They are really well done.
They are at: www.armorcast.com/
Then just click on the Egyptian connection in the Terraform area.
Cool stuff including temples.

BTW folks, the sarcophagi and inner mummy coffins, the smaller Anubis statue and the small sphinxes made by Armorcast are small enough to use inside MM layouts.

Tomb Kings army, eh Willypold?
Have you tried out Wargods of the Ægypticus?
You might like that one if you like Egyptian themes.

The "Large Temple" looks like it could be used to create the hypostyle to go with Manor Houses pylon assembly. This could quickly become very expensive... :D

I have to give Manor House credit. Nice stuff, but not everyone out there can make Armorcast inexpensive. They can!

380 Euros! That is about $800US! I cannot believe the price. That has got to be for the gamer, who is still living on his parents' largess, who just happens to be related to the Rockefellers!!

Willypold, have you taken a look at Wargods of the Ægypticus since you like Egypt so much?
Here is a link to Crocodile Games who is the producer of this game.

Enjoy.

I actually have painted these pieces. Did you guys see my attempt at an Egyptian “Fantasy Crypt? Those pieces mixed in with the MM are the Armorcast ones.

jefcon.com/dwarvenforums/viewtopic.php?t=443

The base coats for the Armorcast Egyptian pieces were easy. Dark-Brown Primer and two shades of dry-brush (medium-brown, then desert-tan). The hard parts were all those hieroglyphics!!! (Some are silly and funny BTW) I found that inks worked well, they sort of “fell into the areas I applied them to. One of the most tedious paints of my life.

380 EUR should come out in the vicinity of 485-500 USD... Still a lot of money, though...

The Wargods look quite interesting! Have you played it? The miniatures look really good, but is it a good _game_? How many minis do you need for a warband?
