When I looked at the Aintsy site, the thing that struck me was the baseline footprint. IIRC it was a 6 millimeter baseline. I couldn't see this as easily compatable with DF. Am I missing something obvious?

IIRC?

6mm what?

Huh?

I think there has been some mis-communication going on here. Let me state what I know.

DF=1 square=1" or 25.4mm
Ainsty=1 square=30mm

Slightly off, but I think we can work with the difference=4.6mm.
That would mean something 3 "squares" long the Ainsty item would take up ~3.5 DF squares.

Is that an actual problem with everyone?
We deal with the half square issue every time we play with DF stuff because of the walls.
I did not know it was still a problem.

Chime in please.

I'm not sure if I follow you... 6 mm? The height of the floor pieces?

We also really enjoy making or own custom items, or conversions (we call them re-do’s) from items from the local toy stores discount bin or even the dollar store (you’d be surprised how many cool items that can be used in a game that can be found at the dollar store  )

I can not agree more, the Dollar Store is an Great Place to shop for things, for a Game. From wacky little animal packs, weird Action figures with accsoeries that make great terrain, etc. Love the Dollar store, i regularly rummage through them for fun things.

I'll double-check myself, I'm at work at the moment, but if I remember right I looked at Ainsty a while back and said something like "nice looking stuff too bad it's not closer to the DF format" to myself. My math could have been off at the time but in my mind's eye I was looking at about a 30% discrepancy between the size of the smallest units. At the time for DF that was 2 inches, and for Aintsy it was 6mm increments. Maybe my internal metric to english converter was off, but that struck me as a tiny baseline.

Ah! I get it! You meant 6 _centimeters_, not 6 millimeters!

1 m = 10 dm = 100 cm = 1000 mm
1 inch - about 25 mm or 2.5 cm

The Ainsty pieces come in basically 3x3 cm or 6x6 cm chunks. That's half a centimeter larger than DF for each square, which means that you will get 6 DF squares to each 5 Ainsty squares. Could work, but you need to have 15 cm/6 inch edges, or multiples of that width, for the two to sit nicely with each other.

What's the thickness of the floor pieces, anyone?

Wow, this thread went crazy  . Catching up with the rest of you, I have a few Ainsty pieces, not dungeons, but a few rowboats (pictured with the Greek island), rafts, and a few stone and wood wharfs. Nice stuff, but a little pricy especially with the dollar to British Pound exchange plus add in that shipping and forget it. I have however been eyeing their modular sewer set, underground parking, and like MLV mentioned the “Caves of Gloom set looks like a nice complement to the DF caves. We may break down and spend the coin just to round out our collection.

Another no-holds-barred miniature company I’m completely blown away by is www.oldgloryminiatures.com/

Check out their 25mm ships, stockades and settlements and some of the accessories are cool too. I’m very interested in a few of those ships. Granted their pricy, but those ships are set up much better for game play than the ones we’ve converted especially for mass naval combat, something I’ve always wanted to set up on a large table. Or game variants like fortified seaside town like the one I posted awhile back vs. say a large galleon and several smaller ships. It would be a lot of fun to play or even used as a backdrop for a much more intense combat involving your players and powerful villains. I just love the look of old ships. :)

I have been meaning to make an order to Ainsty some day since I first found them years ago, but kept getting sidetracked - eBay!

As you get older, eBay gets better and better.
All the time adds up to even more things you missed getting the first or second time around plus all of the things you did get that are now lost, broken, stolen, etc.
On top of that are the prices! I am so addicted!
Moreover, being posted off on the "frontier" here in a mostly agricultural mountainous area with only a 50,000 city nearby to support my hobbies, the Internet and especially eBay has been invaluable in staying somewhat current.

My group of gamers just voted to make an Ainsty order because they have decided it is taken too long for DF to come out with sci-fi furnishings; I was the only dissenting vote. One gamer from here who spends his summers hitting a con a week around the country including Origins, Gen Con Indy and I think, Dragon Con, said DF should have listened to the gamers more and had a Beta sci-fi furnishings expansion come out with the Alpha set. He said he spoke to both Jeff and Stefan this last Summer and heard several others saying the very same thing to them at more than one con. Oh well, life goes on.

I have decided to not bid on anything on eBay for the next six weeks so I can afford to get in on the Ainsty order. The game club is looking to make an order to Ainsty in early April for furnishings.

I will measure everything out to everyone's heart's content, okay? That way y'all can know all of the details. Maybe Jeff will be able to use that sort of info to speed up the DF sci-fi furnishings set.

I figured what I want comes to 132.60£ which goes down to 119.34£ with the discount we have qualified for through a Yahoo group they have.

That value then comes out to $235.02US for me (tonight's exchange rate is $1.9693US for 1£). That does not include what will be my share of the S&H which may be another 40£ for me.

So much fun.

Have a great day!

Nice sci-fi furnishings at Dragglestown, there's no exchange rate and ground shipping:

www.dragglestown.com/cgi-bin/miva?Merchant2/merchant.mv+Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=Dragglestown&Category_Code=GREB

I have all of these pieces, really nice stuff, some I got form DT and some from our local game stores 50% bin, thats how I found out about them. I haven’t painted them yet, but it’s a priority on the painting list once we get the new place up and running. And when the Star Wars miniature buzz die’s down, I’ll buy em’ up by the hundreds cheap :P. I cant wait to do a few Star Wars builds.

IO: Dragglestown, which is Discount Hobbies' WEB page #2, has the Grendel pieces we all have been talking about. The ones in my opinion, at least from DT and DH's pics, look like Squats, not Humans, made the pieces.

Anyway, this will allow someone here to actually have the pieces in-house so that everyone else here at the DF forum can get actual on-the-spot details of the pieces.

Plus, I have been wanting these pieces for quite a while, but let other things block my acquisition.
This way it is finally done.
