TOPIC: Music for the Game....

Re:Music for the Game.... 1 Year, 2 Months ago
I have a fog machine, a nebulizer, and I have experimented with dry ice. Dry ice is great for an "in scene" effect since you can use a small container or foil bit with sides to hold it in so that the fog is right in the scene. There are videos of this idea on youtube if you search for dry ice with miniatures.

The nebulizer uses water to generate a cold water mist, much like some newer humidifiers except the mist is visible. The mist from these does not linger much nor travel far, but they can generate a neat localized effect.

Fog machines of the type I have generate the most lasting fog I have seen, but many fog mixes also have a bit of an odor and some people are sensitive to them. They use a "fog mix", it is a prepacked liquid that takes longer to dissipate than plain vapor does.

I have never messed with the aluminum dust unless that is something in the liquid mix and I was unaware of it.

Stefan, thanks for sharing. It is something like that I am considering doing. I am thinking that I can probably find a program that will allow multi-track and easy setup for quick click during game. That is one of my concerns, I don't want to have to spend more than an instant starting and ending given tracks or sounds. I like the idea of being able to play for example a generic medieval tavern background, then layer a bardic track as appropriate. I figure as long as the volume is right it will be very atmospheric without overwhelming the gaming. Then if a fight needs to start in the background a sudden burst of combat noises coupled with the sudden cease of the bardic track can herald the beginning of the bar fight!

I figure that combinations like that if rendered easy to initiate and end can make for a dynamic sound board that is easy enough to use in game without pulling so much attention the game suffers. I figure if I am going to use more sound and music it should add as much as possible with as little effort as possible. The software selection will be the most critical part since there are so many free and paid sound and music options readily available.

Lorddust,

Have you checked out the realmsound project kickstarter?

It has a software portion that I think would fit what you are looking for, not to mention a ton of sound tracks and special effects, as well as voiceovers.

I've only used it a couople of times but the DMDJ ipad app is pretty great. It uses a lot of layered sounds (background noise & music) with different intensities, plus weather effects as well. None of it has the "loop" issue where you hear where the track begins and ends.

I had briefly looked at Realmsound, but thanks for pointing it out anyway. While the music tracks seem promising and the ambiance tracks would be nice, I felt like I needed more info on the sound board to be able to decide if I wanted to divert funds to pledge on it.

The thing is I have been able to accumulate a decent set of tracks so far without resorting to any editing on my own yet. I feel like I don't really want the voice over tracks and that I only want some of the other tracks they are making, so for me the sound board would be the major selling point. Anyone have a link to better info than what was presented on the main page?

And thanks for the software names granpappy and Stefan, I will look into those.

Thanks. I never was a music fan and I dont know the first thing about music. I just know what I think makes a group feel "epic" and then set the scene for that.

Fortunately, I have friends who do know about music, who don't hesitate to tell me that I like the wrong music, or the right music for the wrong reasons.

I installed Syrinscape, but it won't download add-ons to my clunky old iPad-1.

Sigh.
