Cthulhu Reaper Bones Mini 1 Year, 3 Months ago
Hey all,

So I recently read the Call of cthulhu and have become somewhat obsessed with the story. Do you guys have any book recommendations relevant to that myth?

Also the reason I wanted to post was to see if anyone was selling their Reaper Bones cthulhu add-on. I have fallen in love with and will probably buy it retail in the future. Send me an email at quuids at gmaildotcom if you would like to sell it to me! I plan on using it for games and not reselling it so im really hoping someone will cut me some slack on the msrp of $45-50 (since it was a $10 add-on). I missed the bones kick starter or else I would have picked it up. This would seriously make my week!!

Thanks guys (also I'm not sure if I posted this in the correct section, I apologize if I did not)

If you have a kindle, ipad, etc, a lot of H.P. Lovecraft's work is now free in the public domain. Just google it. Also check out stories by August Derleth. He did a bunch of Cthulhu stories too.
As for titles, you can find some here. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cthulhu_Mythos

As a longtime fan of H.P. Lovecraft, I definitely say, read more! Some of his works are not directly related to the Cthulhu mythos, but all have that sense of horror that is his trademark. I particularly enjoyed his short stories, such as, "The Cool Air," and "Pickman's Model."

August Derleth was a protégé of Lovecraft, though by no means his equal. Derleth completed a number of Lovecraft's unfinished manuscripts, but you can easily tell when Lovecraft left off and Derleth began. Derleth was, however, an outstanding publisher, and it is largely because of him that Lovecraft remained well known for so many decades. One Derleth short story that I did love was not related to the Cthulhu mythos, but did inspire a sense of horror that I found chilling. The story is called "The Lonesome Place," and I still get shivers thinking about it.

Also read Clark Ashton Smith, a contemporary of Lovecraft. Smith, Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard were the three greatest pulp writers of the day, and their influence is unquestionable. Every swords and sorcery hero must give a nod to Conan the Cimmerian, and writers like Jack Vance drew inspiration from Smith.

You're welcome, but I have to admit that I've had that list of movies for years. It was research for a potential campaign that never started.

After you've done some reading and watching, try this link for further Lovecraft immersion. (It's TVTropes-dot-org, which -- appropriately enough -- might just eat your life.)

Enjoy!

CrimsonKing, thanks for reminding me about Dagon -- it's actually one of the better ones. (I haven't been able to get through the Dunwich Horror yet!) I also really like In the Mouth of Madness, but The Resurrected is a secret favorite of mine despite its limitations. And From Beyond was probably the first Lovecraft movie I ever saw.

From beyond reanimator anything with jeffery combs is a-ok lol and as far as The Dunwich Horror goes dont think of the guy who plays Waitley as Waitley think of him as the guy who plays the hologram in Quantum Leap (same guy) lol then just lean back and enjoy the pretty flashy 70s colors (unless youre talking about the one they made recently cause i think they did for SYFY in which case i have no cure)haha i could lovecraft it up all day

There is also a collection of Cthulhu inspired short stories titled Cthulhu 2000 that is worth reading. Gene Wolfe, Roger Zelazny, Harlan Ellison, Ramsey Campbell are some of the contributors.
As for favorite story by Lovecraft, I have to go with The Whisperer in Darkness. Some wickedly creepy sci fi.

If you can find the Horrorclix Great Cthulhu, I think it is a much better looking mini. Unfortunately, I recently sold all the extras of it that I have.
