A famous (and deceased) fellow gamer.... 8 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I'm sure some of you on this forum are old enough to remember who Peter Cushing was but did you know that he had a fond love of miniatures and gaming?

I saw this on another hobby site and thought I'd share. It says his miniatures were made from "compressed drawing paper". Does anyone have more info on that type of material?

Make something idiot-proof and someone will just turn around and make a better idiot.

This makes us realize how distinguished a hobby and what great company we share it with as well as how fortunate we are to have technological advances support our passions. Most can't appreciate how little we had to bring our hobby to life back even only a few decades ago. Now, with folks like Stefan, Wes (and others bringing us quality sound) and the folks from Reaper, (as well as all the other wonderful miniature creators out there!). We should consider ourselves blessed to game in this era. Back when I began we had pot metal lead figures with little details, enamel paints (ie. Testor) and little more than D&D 1.0 with Chain Mail rule for miniatures to bring our passion to life. Gary Gygax was the major proponent in rules and imaginings and Stefan remains the 'sculptor of choice' for all that is FRPGs.
I am not just blowing smoke up their proverbial arse. I am recognizing them for their contributions which has remade RPGs into what they have become. If you have any doubt of their contributions to our passions I beg you to take a look at what we had before versus what we have now. When I started I have imaginings of a world that updated itself and grew as we play. One with a dynamic world which grew between games, one I abandoned because the technology could not support the vision. Today you are not limited by technology. Today you are only limited by your imagination. Consider yourself EXTREMELY fortunate!

Well said! On a related note, I believe we all have some of the "actor" gene in us or else we wouldn't find any interest in role playing games. I can only imagine the imagination necessary to play in Mr. Cushing's group back then. Wowza!

Yes but I'm referring to what looks to be a lot of crude playing material and rules. I believe more was required of the individuals mind "filling in the gaps" back then.

Regardless, it would still be cool to run through a Ravonloft or Cthulhu encounter with Cushing...and Christopher Lee!!

Yes, and some of us are Historical Wargamers as well as being RPG players. In fact I have both Historical 3d figures and historical flats. I also got into creating my own flats using the paint program on my computer and printing them out, cutting them out, and mounting them on cardboard or pennies.

Texas Stu,

That rant gave me shivers...i don't deserve such credit, but it sure felt great! I'm just a Gamer like everyone else, who had good parents and who happens to be an artist...

But i do believe that we are living in a renaissance of Gaming...and i AM pushing for it...I think RPG's are great and should be played by everyone because they teach co-operation and teamwork...as well as tolerance of others who have different abilities as you...work with those types and it will benefit everyone, it teaches you that...it also trains you to use your imagination, one of the most important qualities of humans....

Thank you!
