dmalcolm, even though you have been around for a while, Welcome to the DF forum!

I hope you will enjoy your pack of flight stands and my 2 last remaining gelatinous cubes (those I wanted to sell anyway...). For everyone's enjoyment, please don't be shy (we're a friendly bunch), take pictures and post your setups on the forum whenever you make one!

Shadox, I'm afraid I won't be able to sell you two pack of flight stands anymore as I now have only one left.

The good news is that I now know there is a demand for those Acrylic Flight Stands. I'll do more and I'll take custom size orders!

Biowizard. I would also like to buy a variety of heights of flight stands in the future. At least when my wallet allows it. Put me on your list of players looking for this type of product :). Thank you for posting all of your great work in the hobby. I want to build a light box like you showed us. My only problem is so many ideas and so little time and money.

Let me begin this post by saying, I am NOT trying to take away business from anyone, and will edit / delete this post if I offend anyone.

These are really cool to use, and honestly, at some point, I might put in an order for them myself...

But I already have something similar, a gift from a few years ago:

paizo.com/products/btpy87no?Dr-Wizards-Patented-Elevation-Indicator

Here is the difference - the ones purchased have the text on them, and these don't. I like the idea of being able to "see through" things, or even write on the tubes themselves with a grease marker or wipe off marker to tell exact heights...

Just throwing this out there for people who might want different options.

Don't worry about it galladril, I don't take offense at all! I knew about those from monkplayer through email last Saturday (who already had some and yet bought some of mine) and from seeing them a few years back. You're not taking business away from me as I'm not doing this for business really to start with. At best, this endeavor pays off my hobby fees.

Anyway, Dr. Wizard's Elevation Indicator (other link) is a different product than mine. It seems to be 3 inches high and the height of the mini standing on it is represented by black rings. Also, it looks as if the ends are not polished whereas mine are. Furthermore, the markings on the side reduces transparency. The rods I sell do not have height indicators as height is directly represented by actual rod height. Also, I seem to sell them more than 50% cheaper (inch for inch)!

I have already sold out my first batch of flight stands. I bought ten times more acrylic rods today and I plan cutting them to be 2, 4, 6 & 8 inches long for additional height variation. I think that anything longer would be very unstable on the gaming table. Furthermore, I'm trying to improve my technique of polishing them.

In short, if you want to very precisely indicate the height of a mini on a gaming table, while it is still physically always 3 inches from the table, get Dr. Wizard's Elevation Indicator. If you otherwise want your mini (and possible a few others at the same time) to be really standing 10', 20', 30' & 40' high (2", 4", 6" & 8" from the gaming table), get mine!

I've seen those other elevation indicators, but I still like the actual height options that biowizard is providing.

BIOWizard,

Sorry I missed this time. I will not next time. Traveling around the US is not as easy as it used to be. 5 cities in 3 days is not fun. :-( Anyway I would like

2x 2 inch
2x 4 inch
2x 6 inch
2x 8 inch

Do you think the 8 inch will require bases similar to the last picture posted of the other product? Do dry erase markers work on your tubes?

What Base will give you the answer to
"the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything".

a base y times b base y equals the answer to the question above.

Biowizard: thanks - the stands and cubes arrived today and are looking good.

Some (possibly crazy) alternate ideas for the acrylic stands that just occurred to me: use them during building to allow for a structure "floating in midair" (e.g. by magic, or by antigrav in a sci-fi setting). 4 of them the same height would allow putting them under the corners of a tile.

Perhaps use them for the 10-ton blocks from the old traps set, as if they were dangling from the ceiling, to unnerve the players?

Alternatively, use them to signify a beam of light from the ceiling (either magic, or via natural construction, like the tomb in the intro sequence to Raiders of the Lost Ark where iirc there's a light beam that triggers a poisoned dart trap).

Just thinking out loud, hope this gives people ideas.

FWIW in my last campaign, I built a room of "stone" spires for the PCs to navigate, out of cardboard. They were unpainted and crude, but conveyed the 3D nicely - compared to the minis the scale made the players suitably nervous about the height of the drops when they were navigating from spire to spire. No photos alas. The ensuing attack by a beholder was fiddly to run - would have needed a 4 foot acrylic rod for that, not 4 inches - solved by simply holding the beholder mini in and running the game one-handed.

I got my stands on Thursday, which was just in time for Thursday's game! We used the rods and even stack the falls a couple of times to show the exact height of the Juvenile White Dragon! It was great! Thanks for the rapid shipping and great product!

Shadox,

I will soon have 2, 4, 6 & 8 inches rods for everyone interested!
8 inches rods are sufficiently stable (the definition of stable remains relative) without an added base. Anything longer is very tipsy. I am trying to avoid needing bases to keep prices low and allow placement of miniatures close to the bottom of flight stands.

dmalcolm,

Indeed, the 2 inches long rods could be used as "invisible" support or clear crystalline columns. Green ones could even be used as cryogenic/biological tanks for sci-fi decors.

Monkplayer,

I'm glad you like them!

Re:1" Acrylic Rod Flight Stands 1 Year, 4 Months ago
Since I'm trying to somewhat mass-produce acrylic rod flight stands, I recently made some investments in specialized equipment to generate more beautiful pieces of acrylic. The first batch I made was done on a table saw equipped with a specialized plexiglass triple-teeth carbide saw. After that, I polished the ends with a very narrow MAP torch. Maybe it is my perfectionist side but even though the ends were quite shiny, I could still see saw lines. Furthermore, it seems to be nearly impossible to prevent formation of tiny bubbles with a torch. I therefore started playing with many different successions of sand papers of increasing grit (100, 200, 400 & 600) followed by polishing with 2 types of buffing wheels and compounds. Here`s the new result:

The final product is much more beautiful but it unfortunately takes me more time to make the pieces.
