Please tell us where the two "other" pictures came from -- I could use a good laugh.

If those were freestanding walls I might buy a couple as spell effects, but as a cavern (with a flagstone floor!) they don't really work. They have texture, but no detail and no differentiation. Six of those forming a cavern are going to look extremely uniform, and thus pretty boring. I'd give them a B- (tops) on execution, and a D on concept.

I see they are also 4 squares by 4. Is that a 1" grid as well? It's nice to be the industry standard.

Not going to name any names or badmout anyone, but those appear to be from a kickstarter that just started today. Cavern set... Looked at it, appears rather overpriced for what you get, not that impressed with the sculpts, either.

Honestly, I think Dungeonstone doesn't look bad. It's okay. But Master Maze is far superior in every way.

I'm hoping DF Dwarvenite Caverns KS comes out around the same time next year (tax refund time!) as I like seeing them do well (as well as us from more stretch goals! ;-)

I might as well post a direct link:
www.kickstarter.com/projects/715498539/dungeonstone-3d-terrain-caves-and-caverns-set

The level of craftsmanship in the sculpting is obviously inferior:

Dwarven Forge:

VS

Dungeonstone:

I can understand Stefan`s frustration. The 4*4 design of the Dungeonstone Caves & Cavern Set is clearly a rip off of DF`s long-time approach:

Dwarven Forge:

Dungeonstone:

Dwarven Forge pros:
-Better paint job (touches of green for lichen/moss, and white for crystal deposits).
-Better sculpt (a lot of stalagmite & stalactites everywhere, a floor that does not look like blend Hirst Arts floor slabs).
-Little details that make all the difference such as the resin used to mimic little water ponds every now and then.
-You can expand your line of Cavern Sets with existing beautiful chasms, rivers & lakes!

Dungeonstone pros:
-Obviously pricing $110 vs $149
-Free Standing Walls (You get those from DF if you get the superb River Set)

Biowizard`s take home message: Wait until Dwarven Forge launches its Dwarvenite Cavern kickstarter next year! You will then have all the pros in one shot for probably much cheaper than Dungeonstone`s present KS!

I think we are going to see a number of KS of terrain following DF's success, and already see two.

One other concern to the detriment of this one is that they are doing this all in house, and are hoping to deliver quickly. If they have any success riding DF's coattails, then I doubt they will keep their schedule.

That said, competition is good. I do not think they will seriously bite into the DF market, especially with the addition of Game Tiles to the line.

I am guessign that Stefab posted this because they are currently considering the next Dwarven Forge KS, which may very well be CAVERNS! but won;t be ready to luanch (as Stefan said in another thread) until after the current KS GameTiles ships.

Caverns are my favorite DF environment and if DF can do them in Dwarvenite, at close to the same prices as the current KS, then, well, THAT WILL BE AWESOME!!!

I'm not seeing a mere difference, I'm seeing Dwarven Forge vs something I can make in my spare time and I have no real talent at all. The two are not in the same arena. I'm not trying to fan-boy it up, the second stuff looks like amateur work rather than a product.

Many of the Forge Fans in these very forums do better work in their spare time. One looks like it had some love and devotion poured in, the other looks like a "gimme some cash" effort. Maybe I am being too harsh, but I would not pay more than forty for their whole set.

My players rue the day I bought "Dragon Mountain". Ever since they give every creature a bit more respect. You never know when the GM will decide that this group is crafty...

I do like the wide passage pieces in the upper left of the photo Biowizard provided -- which is actually something I've suggested for Master Maze (and possibly for HellScape, but I'd have to check my posts) -- but only for being a wide passage to connect chambers of a cavern.

I think that it really boils down to this: The Dwarven Forge pieces are beautiful. The other ones aren't.

I look at it this way.... Games have used standard modules for 30 years+ part of where Stefan had to get the ideas in the first place.
I remember all the crazy stuff printed on cardboard what seems like Eons ago... Remember WizWar.
I also remember having a similar idea as DF back when the resin was garbage and the silicone rubber was so high priced .... at that time gamers were a very different crowd... most had no money for figures let alone game terrain. When I pitched the idea to my fellow gamers they thought I was insane.... (Glad Stefan stuck with the idea).
Its different now with Ebay, KickStarter, Websites, Search Engines... Even Niche markets have a chance.... In the old days you had to produce catalog's and put adds in game magazines that had terrible results.

Stafan's work is well thought out, incredibly well executed, beautifully produced and Stafan should be very proud of his artistic accomplishment in everything he does. He should take pleasure that duplication is the greatest form of flattery.

This other KickStarter project just looks so bland and uniform... nothing special...but just watch how much he sells. My hope would be it brings more people into the use of DF sets....remember buying lower quality figures to start and getting better ones later?

Having just hit 1.9million dollars in a single KickStarter Project has stimulated a whole new market.... Take pleasure in the accomplishment.

One big problem I see is the Dwarven Forge Site nearly always being out of stock has feed the temptation for people to compete... and KickStarter has opened Pandora's Box due to providing a simple method for people to reach a huge audience.

Stafan... Please don't feel frustrated you have a huge following and a whole new group coming when shipment starts in October

Just my thoughts,
John
